------------------------------------------------------------

A Complex Day Of Atmospheric Potential,

But At The Same Time, A Very Simple Day
Of Groomed Technical Refinement.

They make movies about “Singin’ In The Rain”, representing
the concept that there can be a very positive experience even
when the weather is less than ideal...

We get laughed at when we recount the fact that we’ve
had some of the very best technical front-side carving
performance days, ever, in these forecast conditions at
Tremblant.

Think about it... Atmosphere aside...

fresh grooming, soft snow, no traffic.

All you need to do is stay dry, and that is most easily facilitated
with a Descente brand Poncho, and secondly, if foggy-vision is
an issue, yellow lens industrial safety glasses instead of goggles.
It’s already warm out, so you do not need the foam seal around
your eyes which can actually make fog inside the lens, what you
need is to protect your eyes from droplet blast at descent speeds,
plus air flow to stay lens-fog free, plus the yellow tint restores
about 85% of the contrast, making foggy conditions seem almost
like regular daylight.

Weather Notes:

With the heaviest rainy potential being the early open hours
we suggest that a practical option is to sleep in, have a relaxing
late breakfast and then hit the slopes a bit later when the chances
of things being a lot drier, or at least a lot less rainy, are greater.

It is important to note that when the rainy icons are indicated at “Light”,
the active weather usually passes in bands that are very brief and
sometimes miss the Mountain completely. We could be wrong.
There are way too many wild cards in this scenario to be sure of
anything other than significant wet potentials at either random
points of time, or continuously.

The real potential for fun in these conditions is the
practical absence of traffic wear that comes with a
few rainy forecast icons that keep most folks at home,
combined with the fresh overnight grooming that
renders out vast expanses of immaculate smooth
surfaces. Due to the closeness of temps to Zero C
at Mountain elevations, there can also be rocket-fast
natural speed. As a frequent by-product of this weather
profile there can also be “Corn-Snow”, which in best case
scenario’s results in the equivalent of skiing on billions
of trillions of tiny, tiny ball bearings.

We could be wrong, but in our opinion, where there’s
fresh corduroy, we think you’ll find good speed that is
directly proportional to pitch angle. An additional asset
is that the deep frost underneath has not gone anywhere
yet, so it should be acting as a time-release stability/support
element, all day. As long as the frost is intact, the Mountain
tends to shed water off very effectively instead of absorbing it
because the frost is a functional barrier.

The Sous Bois/Hors Piste And Un-Groomed Group.

Obviously, these are the most weather-sensitive trail
categories, evident by the both the outright closures
and/or the “Progressive” open status pending Ski Patrol
certifications for safe access. What we want to point out
is that the underlaying deep frost support is fully intact
throughout these trails as well, so their restricted access
is not because they are losing snow, it’s because they are
either not yet safe after an overnight exposure to sub-zero C,
and/or preservation of conditions for more favourable
weather days ahead. In this situation it could be a bit of both.

In the meantime, below are a couple of yesterday reminders of
what is still here.

We are very grateful to have a Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Un-Groomed
contributor for today who states that our assessment of the frost
in the base still stands. Trails such as C.B.C., Tiaga, Buzz, Les Rapides,
Expo and Windigo are all very good. In particular, Tiaga has been singled
out as being an example of "amazing coverage”.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
