T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit, Under Progressive Assembly @ 11:27 P.M.
The skiing was considerably better than expected, considering the wild
weather warm/cold flip over the past 36 hours.
For sure, it was windy over the Summit level crests where the focus
of force caused the exposure of the firm base for the first few metres
of descent, however, once you were below the crest, there were very
sweet surfaces that had good grip, great speed, and fantastic glide.
For one example on the glide factor reference... The Mi Chemin plateau
from Nansen over to Beauvallon which normally takes a few skating
strides to traverse, was easily cleared with nothing other than the
gravitational momentum from your Nansen runout.
The other category of exceptional performance would include
many of the trails in the lee, or shelter of the Mountain. Below is
a fine example, Versant Nord/North Side trail # 72, P’tit Bonheur.

Mountain Op’s continues to demonstrate a huge commitment
to new terrain development and below is one example from Versant
Nord/North, trail # 67, Lowell Thomas Bas/Lower.

We don’t know enough to say for sure that there could be new
trails opening for the weekend, but it seems very evident that
“soon” may be just around the corner.
For tomorrow, because it is day 2 in a post-thermal recovery
period, the level of refinement should be elevated considerably,
as it usually is. The second cycle of grooming over a consistent
sub-zero time period always increases the range and quality
of finished square area. That is notwithstanding the forecast
sunny with temps reaching up to just kiss Zero C that could
produce a wee touch of solar softening where radiation
energy can build.
The bottom line is that if today’s reality was great performance,
if all the co-factors line up, tomorrow could be quite a bit better.

It was briefly warm and wet yesterday, today it’s well froze,
so the base is going to be understandably firm.
However...
The good news is that grooming has been conducted and is
still ongoing, after the temp’s dropped back below Zero C.

The Quality Comes In After The Temp’s Go Down.
So, here is our one-pic. surface quality and performance forecast:
11.29.22.Nord.North.Ptit.Bonheur.Grooming.Refinement.Sample.c.jpg
Basically, we think the conditions today will be quite close to
those we had just a couple of days ago.
Weather Notes:
Even though the thermal wet event yesterday was brief
over Mountain elevations, there will be effects carried
forward. Warm, wet weather burps are a normal and
usual occurrence in any Fall profile, so we’re thankful
when they are of short duration.
Looking at the 14 long range shows we will probably see
at least one more oscillating Fall temp cycle ion Saturday.
For today itself, as easy as the early season temp’s are,
this is a cooler one, and it’s windy out, so there’s a good
reason to pay extra attention to garment seals and closures.
Conditions Notes:
Repeat Today’s Headline:
"It was briefly warm and wet yesterday, today it’s well froze,
so the base is going to be understandably firm."
There are 2 factors that could maybe, possibly, generate
favourable trail renderings though.
1) Where the grooming night-shift was conducted after the
refroze, there should be very fine and smooth surfaces with
good depths of loose skiable snow, however there may be a
tendency for it to be a relatively course granular composition.
Any level of granularity will respond quickly to user traffic and
it won’t be long until the particle sizes become smaller/finer.
What you will need to be mindful of is the evolving changes
in top-surface depths as daily traffic hours pass. You may not
assume that the runs you make this morning will all be identical
this afternoon, especially where trails are narrower or converge,
or over crests and contours. Sensitivity to evolving conditions
is a key safety element.
2) There was natural snowfall to variable amounts that came all
night, however it was delivered by a bit of a gusty wind so there
may be some nicely drifted over portions as well as some wind
blown exposed bits, particularly over frontal facing pitches and
over topographical contours and crests.
Explore with reduced speed and caution until you have confirmed
safe passage. Your control and safely will be a direct function of
edge sharpness on Skis or Board.

not exposed the base.”
