The Skiing Was Very Fine, And At The End Of The Day,
Mother Nature Magically Allowed The Sun To Peek Through... Occasionally.

As we expected, the traffic was relatively light in the afternoon.
There were some wear signs and mogul formations, but once
again in a repeat of yesterday, if you maintained a cautious
speed, all those zones were easy to either see ahead and
choose a different line, or skirt them on the edges where
there was a lot of soft snow to facilitate avoidance moves.

The next 4 days offers significant potential in daily
incremental increases of grooming compaction, so
we are forecasting better by the day in terms of
matched surface challenge to rated trail signage
which will be especially important for Beginners
and Intermediates.

This 2 day snowfall event will have a primary benefit in the
consolidated upgrade that it will make within the established
open groomed open terrain. It may/should/possibly accelerate
the potential opening of previously developing terrain which
has only had snowmaking as a foundation up to this point.

In our opinion, it is not quite at the level that could open
trails on purely deep, fresh natural snow, but if the weather
stays cool, and the snow in the forecast materializes, we may
not be too far off for some significant open terrain expansion.

The biggest mechanical advantages in the the snowfall of
yesterday vs. the day before were in the levels of internal
humidity, yesterdays was thicker and heavier, plus, yesterday
had almost no wind at all, so it fell straight into place, as
opposed to Friday’s “Howler” that pushed it off, or drifted
it in, in uneven patterns. From that standpoint, the difference
today is going to seem like a far more evenly distributed benefit.

For the past couple of days Mountain Crews could be seen
setting up snow fencing down Versant Sud/South Side
trail # 18, McCulloch. Normally that would mean a race course
is in preparation and there would be no public access.
That did not appear to be the case yesterday as it sure
looked like general use. We wonder if it is some sort of
“Break-in” allowance, but we’d still be willing to bet a buck
that there will be a competition event here soon.

The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades/Bush snow is not there yet
for safe navigation, however it is building slowly so additional
patience is needed until we get more snow. Here is a Nord/North
upper P’tit Bonheur trail-side Sous Bois sample and you can see
there is progress, but the overall depths necessary to cover irregular
natural hazards is still a bit off in the future.

Weather Notes:

Warm and easy early winter, with a fabulous fresh
white coat over every surface, every tree bough,
and every road, will make for beautiful scenery,
but maybe some messy driving...

Conditions Notes:

12 cm’s the first day, 13 cm’s yesterday, for a total of 25 cm’s
is going to mean a continuation of surfaces that tend to be soft
and build moguls to variable degrees because the total amount
is a wee bit more than grooming can typically compact to ideal
levels of density in the two following overnight-shifts.

This tendency for evolving bumps is more or less related to
both pitch angle and/or traffic volume, so there will be unique
conditions within the trail network that will change during
primarily the morning when the largest attendance is circulating
over the initial grooming.

The reason the morning see’s the most change is that the typical
Sunday use pattern is likely to also evolve, where the long-distance
regional attendee’s(#) cram in as many runs as they can early, then
they hit the road at noon for the long trip home so they can have
enough time tonight to get kids ready for school, and be ready
for the work week.

What that usually means is whatever patterns of use are evident
by noon, stay relatively similar all afternoon as there may only be
a fraction of the traffic left by 1:30 or so.

Big, very big bonus if you can stay for the whole day. Many,
but not all Sunday afternoons are like a private club for the
chosen few wise enough to plan ahead. Will that be the case
today? Stick around and find out!

(#)For 2 common examples, the Adanac Ski Club, here from
Sudbury, Ontario, have a 650 Kilometre drive home today.
That’s roughly 7 hours of drive-time alone, notwithstanding
fuel/food/bathroom stops. Similarly for the Glenn Eden group
from Milton Ontario, it’s just under 600 kilometres. This is all
with busy regional Sunday afternoon traffic on roads covered by
the biggest snow storm of the so-far season. With the prospect
of anywhere up to 8 or 9 hours on the messy highways, you can
see why there’s a motivation to get going early.
