Clinically the skiing was, for the most part, close to
the forecast for high quality groomed trails we made,
however...
On the practical side(a), vision was an unexpected and
unavoidable Mother Nature challenge due to 2 factors.
First, there was fog that generated a very flat light with
low contrast making contours and bumps difficult to
distinguish. Secondly, there was a sleet-like very fine,
wet snow particle that was not rain, but had an adhesive
moisture component that coated goggles persistently.
There were times when the wet snow particles were so
very very fine that you could get away with goggles up.
1.22.23.Sud.South.Johannsen.Resort.Base.POV.Up.At.Flying.Mile.Quad.d.jpg
On the practical side(b), what we have written about
previously in terms of some zones of very firm, very
densely compacted, traffic polished snow, did show
through in places, where for examples like trail
intersections, or where trails/traffic converge/narrow
causing concentrations of passage, it was essential
to descend at reduced speeds in order to maintain
safe control. We heard multiple comments about
icy bits but with our regularly tuned edges we just
did not personally have any significant issues.
For sure, there are a few icy bits, it’s a Mother Nature
thing that happens because it is way outside the capacity
of humans to control the weather, so...
The safety/utility/optimization provided by well tuned
edges can not be overstated. Anecdotally, 9 out 10 people
complaining about “icy” can not tell you when they had
a ski or board tuneup last.
While readers here as an informed group may be the last
ones to need this reminder, it is nevertheless critical for
all serious ski/board enthusiasts to promote the benefits
of both safe control and safe speed through tuning to their
friends within the general Alpine Snow Sports population.
This is a situation that can be anticipated when
the temp’s float around Zero C, as they have been
and could be again, so this should be a proactive
word to the wise for those arriving when the long
range 14 day forecast shows that potential.

As usual, when fog or heavy snowfall makes for
challenge finding your way, the unique Tremblant
Info. Ski Crews can steer you in the right direction.
Mother Nature “happens”, so this is a very tangible
guest benefit that can help you make the best of it.
All that being said, with good edges and in the clear
moments, the skiing was fast and really fine. In
the not so clear periods, the precipitation was
accumulating functionally as snow to depths that
were enhancing conditions all afternoon, and we
think that could reasonably predict benefit for tomorrow.

Wonderful White Winter Easy.
Mild temps, low wind speed and more snow...
a fabulous combination for everyone lucky
enough to be here today.

Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
In the freshly groomed, generally very fine, however
on some of the steeper pitches there can occasionally
be small icy bits. Your perception of those as icy bits
will be directly proportional to the sharpness of your
edges. We specifically say “perception” because there
are also zones of very dense, highly compacted and
traffic polished snow that are not technically icy, but
with dull edges may feel icy underfoot.
It should be noted that Mountain Crews have used
some fairly aggressive grooming to get into, and
break up most of the solid portions, so there can
be some mixed particle sizes ranging into courser
sizes periodically but we think those should respond
favourably to traffic reducing their size over the
course of the day.
In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed,
there are still zones of very fine, even untracked deep
snow, but there has been a considerable settling since
the last big snow. Consequently there are very well
established patterns of use and there are also natural
hazards that require careful line-of-sight low speed
navigation if you want to avoid some of the Pre-Cambrian
substrates.
It is possible that the typical Sunday traffic profile of
a somewhat busy morning followed by a somewhat
quiet afternoon may likely happen as weekenders
hit the highways at just after lunch to get back to
Theirville to set up for the work and school week.
