Weather Happens....

It started out with hours of this, and despite
overnight, it’s forecast to end up like this.

------- 10:20 A.M. Insert Update: --------------

Significant active snowfall has started @ 10:20 A.M.
on the Versant Sud/South Side, approximately 2.75 hours
ahead of forecast. A very good sign!

Whatever inconvenience the overnight precipitation is
responsible for this morning, it came after several hours
of this above and we think that because of that, a good
deal of it will be absorbed into the finished groomed
trail surface. It may take another day for more complete
degrees of rendering, but what would have affected the
Mountain for a week or more in the good old days, is now
typically integrated overnight. Furthermore, the chances
of very quick recovery are greatly enhanced by the forecast
return of snowfall, starting at 1:00 P.M. today.

From the “Fond Memories” department...

Yesterday was a surprisingly superb day. Some of the
groomed trails were literally the best of the season so-far.

Versant Nord/North Side Duncan was an outstanding example
of excellent high performance from top-to-bottom.

Nansen, P’tit Bonheur, Beauchemin Haut/Upper and Bas/Lower,
Algonquin and many many others were all outstanding smooth,
seamless and had great glide and speed. It was one of those days
where an athletic Front-Side carver was pretty much guaranteed
to run out of muscle way before you could cover it all.

If nothing else, all that foundational excellence should be the
basis for a very quick integrated recovery for today.

Weather Notes:

“February Thaws” and "January Thaws” are a common
mid-winter occurrence and can last from a few hours
to a few days. In this case we need to be thankful that
the wet portion of this entirely normal burp in the
weather is projected to be a short one. The warm period
may extend for a handful of days, however the overnight
lows should be all Sub-Zero C’s at cooler Mountain elevations
so we are not overly concerned with anything in this forecast
and warm temp ranges are always easy to dress for.

Conditions Notes:

There are 61 “Progressive” i.e., gradual trail openings this
morning that are subject to Ski Patrol certifications, so...

It will be critically important to consult with the Tremblant
Info. Ski Crews for optimized utility today.

Accessible open trails may change on a run-by-run basis
and the very best radio-controlled Intel. on that is via the Info.Ski.

It is highly probable that the number of open trails
may change, maybe change multiple times, today.

There are innumerable wild cards in the weather
generated uniqueness that could potentially alter
availability so we all just have to take a deep breath,
be patient and adapt focus within the temporarily
limited terrain for today.

It’s safety and preservation modes that are common
following adverse weather, it’s a process, we have to
get through it... At least its short, and the degree of
normalcy should begin to rapidly restore at just around noon.

With the early temps being where they are, it’s going
to seem very spring-like until elevations get back below
Zero C. The very fortunate part of that is the simultaneous
snowfall that should buffer the temp drop by adding a
functional cushion over the solidifying of the base.
What we have seen before with this precipitation profile
is that the new snowfall has a sponge-like effect, if there
is enough of it, that can literally suck up some of the surface
dampness. If that happened, there could be a lot less icy
than if the temps just dropped without any additional snow.

Of course... if there is not much additional snowfall and the
temp’s drop, you can see there could be icy potential and
for that reason we’d say there’s a major indicator for bringing
sharp, fresh edges.

As usual when temps back/forth cross the Zero C mark, there
can be any number of “wait and see” scenarios....

they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
