As only one example of dozens of fabulously well
prepared groomed trails, Versant Nord/North Side
Duncan has been totally amazing fun with it’s
undulating topographical contours. With a wee
touch of speed, Duncan Bas/Lower especially,
has been like a roller coaster with the capability
to generate near zero gravity as you apex the
superbly integrated big bumps along its path.

The drop in the temps today, down to -6 C,
was exactly enough to take the dampness
out of the Sous Bois so everything felt light
and fluffy.

Bottom Line...

Excellence can be found everywhere.

New Snow, New Fun!

It snowed so hard yesterday afternoon that
photography was almost useless, but we can
tell you for a fact, on the trail network, it was
one of the top 3 or so, technically excellent,
groomed, front-side carving days of the season, so-far.

Weather Notes:

For the best insight into the stability of base
conditions, just look at the overnight low
temp numbers across the 14 day long range
outlook. This is a very healthy profile for
continued quality over the foreseeable future.

Below:
The new snow is super-packable. What you see
is about 90 seconds of snowfall volume over the
base of the clean ski, while the ski with all the
snow attached to it was flipped over and what
stuck to it was exactly the way it came off the
surface due to the very high adhesive qualities
generated by its internal humidity.

It is the achievable density of this snow when
compressed by the weight of a grooming machine
passing over that should be the source of the
performance excellence we expect to find today.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

Where freshly groomed, there is extraordinary potential
in the quality and performance because of the high internal
humidity of the new snowfall with its inherent density.
When compressed over the pre-existing base it should
make an excellent “construction grade” strata. Edge-set
and lateral grip turning force are exceptionally high,
and so-far it has been very fast with good glide
characteristics which is not always the case with
warmer snowfall.

It is possible that some of the groomed category may
be technically “recently groomed”, meaning groomed
within the past day or so, and where that is the case,
the new snow may exhibit some tracking resistance,
especially where wind-shaping may have deposited
more snow depths than the official total. For that reason
we would advise that particularly for Beginners, it may
be wise to stay on the main Green boulevards until
you are thoroughly warmed up and very confident that
you can handle extra challenge.

5 cm’s of new snow is well within the ideal single
grooming pass assimilation range up to 10cm’s,
so we think the finished level of seamless
smoothness could maybe even produce some
“Best Of” conditions for today.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

The Versant Nord/North Side and Edge sectors have the
most direct benefit from wind-shaped drifting, however,
the new snow is fairly heavy in the untracked Hors Piste
and definitely needs some effort to push through where
the drift peaks make it prone to thickness.

In the Un-Groomed mogul zones, it is a beautiful
surface refresher that traffic should render quickly
over the weekend. In the long range outlook, this
is probably going to be the most sensitive trail group
as the cool overnights are likely to keep things solid
on a round the clock basis so until we get a really
solid deep dump of new snowfall, these trails will
be legitimate Expert technical skills required.

It’s Friday of what can be a 3-day weekend for
a lot of regional skiers who plan for it, so it is
likely to be a bit on the busy side. Please be
patient in both lift lines and out on the trails.
