------------ T360 Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 9:13 P.M. -----------------

Mountain Crews have a lot of grooming work to catch up on tonight...

The effects of traffic were quite a bit more intense
than we expected and there were many listed groomed
trails that had significant mogul formations by early
afternoon. By Last Run, some were just plainly big.

The McCulloch sample above was moguls wall-to-wall
and very slow and deliberate navigation was required
to safely descend as slick and icy bits of the base were
exposed between the peaks.

It could be said, to be fair, that there was a high degree
of dynamic evolution in the conditions simply because
it was a very busy day.

Even P’tit Bonheur had moguls on its path which is
only evident on days of relatively high volume. Oh
well, it is the weekend, what more can we say...
we may have been right applied to first tracks, but
we were wrong in terms of how it ended up.

The attendance was large enough that the Versant
Nord/North Side P-Zone was closed by roughly
10:30 A.M. We’d call that unusual for early Feb.
There was a noticeable decrease in the afternoon,
the singles line on both the Expo Quad and Lowell
Thomas Quad were never more than about 4 minutes
after lunch, so if you wanted to keep moving, it was
possible within select areas.

Surprise! The weather forecast was “incorrect”...
As far as the weather was concerned, it went from sunny
to overcast in about an hour so by 1:45 it was clearly
apparent that a cloud front was quickly moving in
and it was solidly overcast, at times, quite dark grey.

Whenever dynamics enter the picture,
the very best Mountain Intel is as close
as your next ride up.

Tomorrow’s another day, supposed to be all sun, all day.

We wish Mountain Crews the very best for grooming
tonight, it gunna be a long one...

A Mini 3-Pic. Trail Case Study Of Versant Nord/North Side Duncan.
A common example amongst the dozens and dozens of
Mountain-wide refined developments and similar conditions.

As a Summit-To-Base trail, Duncan has been a standard of
fun and excellence for several consecutive seasons because
of the refinements it has been developed with that have
enhanced both it’s ease of utility and its fun factor.

To begin with, the Summit pitch has been, weather and
snowfall permitting, widened considerably to take over
some of the space formerly left to the Saute Mutons mogul
zone under the Duncan Quad. This crest, and the pitch
below have been prone to icy tendencies, but by widening
the upper entrance and the pitch, the traffic load and
consequent wear stress have been vastly reduced, and
the entire zone is far easier for a far wider skills range
as a result.

Here’s a shot below of that from the last really sunny
day, Jan. 30, showing the extra width to the chair line
and to the left of the mid-pitch tree stand. The old
Duncan dimensions were much narrower to the the
right side of both the lift line and the tree stand.

Duncan Bas/Lower has an inherent cross fall-line bias to
the right descending side and what Mountain Crews have
done for the last several seasons is to leave the basic
shapes of the big bump snowmaking along the trails
central linear pathway, but very smoothly integrate them
into the flow of the land. What you end up with is a rather
roller-coaster like opportunity to use consecutive left hand
turns from the right lower side, to apex the big bump contours
sequentially. This can produce a series of zero-gravity turning
points over the big contours as you are literally, but very briefly,
going slightly uphill on each one. It is fantastic, addictive fun
at speed.

If you haven’t been on Duncan recently,
it’s definitely worth a run and we’ll bet
you’ll be back for seconds, thirds, or more!!!

Weather Notes:

There is a significant spread between a deep overnight chill
rising dramatically to a quite warm daily forecast high. We
predict that as a consequence of the cold part, there should
be an easily sustained degree of that chill in the trail surfaces
for the entire day.

This pattern is forecast to be repeated over the next 4 nights
and we think there will be extraordinarily fine Skiing, and very
easy mid-day conditions as a result.

One way to deal with the very cool early hours is to sleep in,
have brunch, start later when it’s already warmed up a bit and
ski right through to Last Run. Your hours on the Mountain
will be exactly the same, but garment-wise, you won’t have
to deal with a freezing start and a boiling end.

Conditions Notes:

Weekend Open Hours Extended To 3:45 P.M.

It is a weekend Sunday, so it may be busy, however
if it’s a typical Sunday, it may clear quite a bit by
noon or shortly after as regional commuters like
to get a head start on the race home.

In The Groomed:

Fabulous mid-winter, front-side conditions that
are very fine to excellent across all ranges and
skill level ratings. One of the hallmarks of these
types of conditions is the seamless connectivity
between escalating challenge levels, so it’s a
great opportunity to naturally advance over the
course of a day as confidence and practice allow.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

The recent incremental snowfall has been a
good refresher for many of the trails/zones
in this group, however, it is still wise to
explore with caution as in some cases, it has
been just enough to cover some hazards
cosmetically, but in a sense acting like
snow-camo because it is a relatively thin
layer. A chunk of granite with 3 cm’s of
loose snow over it is still a chunk of granite.

If you use an appropriately slow speed, you’ll
be able to see most of them with enough
time and space to avoid contact so stay slow
on all initial explorations and don’t let your
enthusiasm overwhelm your common sense.
