12/10/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Eve., Prime Time Apres Ski Edit, at 10:30 P.M.

It was a very interesting day at Tremblant from
different points of view.

Speaking of Views...

It was a Very Big Sky over Tremblant today....

Firstly, the Skiing/Boarding were for the overwhelming majority,
as we had hoped, Excellent!

Surfaces were Smooth, Swift, and the carving was very sweet indeed.

The wind was, as forecasted, a bit gusty at the Summit, but once
you were descending, it was less and/or less noticeable.

It was the wind during the Snow Storm that kept the snow from
accumulating to any degree in the tree boughs, but not enough
to blow much off the Trail Surfaces that all seemed to benefit.

The high performance that could be experienced certainly took your mind
away from anything as trivial as the breezes anyway. A couple of Quiet
Trail-Side breaks in a Sunny Spot even had heat that could be felt,
so we thought it was very pleasant and easy to deal with.

Mountain Operations had some challenges today and we've had a
number of P.M. inquiries about the Duncan Quad Stoppages, so we'll
address that below in "Reply", later tonight as time permits.

Bottom line there is, everything is expected to be back on-line
as far as we know, tomorrow morning.

Above: First Tracks at Last Run!

Yoda-Speak... Parked on the North, We were, so last run down Beauchemin
with all the fresh powdery Snow and then right at the crest where
you cut left to go into the Edge Sector, we encountered this single,
wide, perfect strip of immaculate Corduroy.

Courtesy of a brand new Pinroth Groomer/Packer being filmed for
a Demo, this incredibly Satin Smooth Snow extended all the way to
the North Base and we got to be the first to leave Super Carves
for the entire distance.

As we said in last night's Apres Ski, if this is any indication of todays
Grooming results over yesterdays Fresh Snow, this morning will be
one very amazing morning of "First Tracks"!!!

Below:
Here is a glimpse of the accumulation that was occurring on the North
under the Duncan Quad, over Saute-Moutons, by "Last Run"...

(As "Skiable" as it looks, this is a closed run, so either the Patrol
was "Testing", or someone was breaking the rules. Either way,
the accumulation is obvious, as is the temptation to do the later.
This pic is here only for Snowfall Sample imagery and we categorically
state that Mountain Users should always Obey posted SKi Patrol Mountain
signage.)

None of the photography here today is spectacular, clear, sharp
panoramic. There was so much Snow in the air at times that it
plugged up the eyepiece viewfinder on the Camera as it swirled
around. Our Camera has a diopter sensor that detects the presence
of your eye to the eyepiece and automatically switches from the LCD
Viewfinder display to the eyepiece and the Snow plugged that up too,
so for a while we couldn't figure out why the LCD was not working.

Consequently, images you see here today have turned up, burned up,
highlights, contrast, colour balance, definition and sharpness just to
get some surface detail out of them. We always try to prioritize
Snow Surface Detail because a good pic. is worth a thousand words
to any experienced Winter Snow Sport Fan.

Below: This one is typical of the Summit scenery yesterday and also
typical of the number of Jr. Ski Teams Training at Tremblant too.

Whether it's School programs, Race programs or what-ever, there were
dozens of identifiable Kids Groups and Coaches out on the slopes and all
running hard and fast for early season conditioning.

You don't see a lot of deep snow in the shot above because the wind velocity
was too great over the peak to be able to retain it. Within 20 vertical Metres
that all changed though and there were drifts and depths anywhere from 10
to 20 some odd CM's. Regardless of the stat's, we'd say original 15 CM
forecast is pretty close to what we got, but there's almost no place to
measure consistent depth due to wind induced irregularities in the way
it settled.

The Snow frequently moved across the Mountain in waves of intensity.
"Whiteouts" were happening occasionally and this one below is from
the same vantage point as the one above, but there's no background
to be seen other than a White, Wall of Snow.

A close look at this Boarders silhouette will show that there is a "Filter"
on this pic. of about 1 billion tiny blowing snow crystals.

Normally, you'd be able to see across to Johannsen Peak behind
this Boarder, but not at this Whiteout Moment.

Below:
Farther down the Mountain, this sample on lower Nansen shows
typical rate of snowfall for almost all afternoon.

As the day ends, Mountain Crews are assessing all the priorities
for what needs to be done for today, so teams are moving all over
to survey conditions. This one below is on the North at the Lowell
Thomas Triple Chair Base loading zone with Rigodon, Trail #69
in the background.

All these Pic's lead to one inescapable conclusion...

Today will be an outstanding day of very fine Skiing and Boarding!

Todays Weather...

Starts out Sunny, but that could change, RAPIDLY, see attached.
It's supposed to stay predominantly sunny with a daytime high
of -6 C, which would be easier without the Moderate Westerly
winds forecast to have some gusty periods. You'll find it blowing
up the Mountain over the Taschereau sector, headed towards
Lowell Thomas. It will have a lot less force below the Summit,
so we do not expect it to be uncomfortable.

Apparently so...

----------------------------------------------------------

Conditions Caveat:

90% of Tremblant Conditions will be Great today, however, last weeks
"Warm" caused an icy substrate to be formed and with yesterdays wind,
the new snow cover can be thin in places allowing that icy base to be exposed.

Traffic/Wear may cause those locations to be exposed. Caution with speed
in those areas is necessary. Those conditions can change during the day.
Do not assume that everything will be the same in those areas from run to run.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)

T360 Apres Ski, Late Night Edition.

As mentioned above, Mountain Operations had quite a big challenge today.

The Duncan Quad had to be slow winch speed off-loaded twice today.

As we understand it, an electrical transformer blew early this morning
at somewhere around 9:00 A.M. and that necessitated the first off-load.

The Diesel Powered Backup was started at around noon and that seemed
to be doing very well, until about 2:20 or so, P.M. when a Hydraulic
Component in the Backup System let go and Duncan had to be slow winched
up again.

At the time of the second incident, Quebec Hydro were still there with the big
Trucks working on the Power restoration that cause the first one.

Tremblant Mountain Guests that got caught on the North Side, were bussed
back to the South.

It is also our understanding that repairs should be completed by Tomorrow
Morning.

This post is for all those that either eMailed, texted or called with
concerns about this, and for the record, we have suggested that
Anyone with concerns about this today, should call Tremblant.ca's
customer service line as found on the Tremblant.ca website.
