Important Weather Conditions Observations:
Snow In The Trees.
You Know Trail Surfaces Are Going To Be Good
When You See Snow In The Trees.

When there is more evident snow in the trees in
the morning “Eye Opener”, you know there is
a proportionally greater overnight natural snow
accumulation within the trail network surfaces.
The benefits are obvious, however...
There will be unique and distinct zones of
retained snowfall accumulations due to
wind-shaped, lee-side, backfill/drift-in.
12.21.21.Summit.Web.Cam.Weather.Conditions.Observations.At.6.57.A.M.b.jpg
If you look closely above, you will see a sort-of dusty appearance
under, around and following the directional path of the red
arrows which is very quick and gusty winds pushing fine snow
particles across the surface. Basically, there has been enough
of this wind velocity to potentially generate some zones of deeper
accumulation due to its Nor-West directional source.
The Versant Sud/South Side wind facing trail expanses
are less likely to retain depth as the ramp-like shape
of the Mountain facing into the wind is more directly
exposed, while the Versant Nord/North Side trails,
many of which are narrower, and almost all, are facing
away from any direct exposure, are far more likely to
accumulate snowfall depths as the wind blows snow
over the top of the Summit, where it tends to drift
downwards, thereby backfilling into the calmer,
far less windy, far more sheltered trails.
In this Nord/North side case, the narrower the trail,
the more chances there are of this drift-in benefit.
For that reason, trails such as #’s 64/65, Marie-Claude
Asselin and Banzai, even in their current un-groomed
raw states may have some really sweet fresh powder depths.
Fantastic Expert Level New Terrain Opening News!
Versant Sud/South Side, Trails:
A) - # 18 - McCulloch.
B) - # 13 - Erik Guay.
Both of these upper Sud/South trails are
on initial “Progressive” opening status, so
we would expect those to clear very early
in open hours.
Weather Notes:
The Official start of winter... The shortest day of the year...
Many things pivot on this date!
Conditions Notes:
On a Photo-Macro, close-up level, almost all trail
surfaces should have new snowfall benefit because
the small, fine snow particle size should adhere to
the grooves in the groomed trail corduroy. In our forecast,
the difference is very likely to be between Versant Sud/South
and Versant Nord/North, where we think you are going
to find significant differences in accumulated overnight
new snowfall depths.
In particular, we are forecasting the left descending sides
of Versant Nord/North Side trails may have the greatest
amounts of retained new snow as the tree-lined sides
facilitate a downward drift-in due the calmness of the
winds at surface levels behind the shelter that both the
land contours and trees offer.
On some of the Versant Sud/South side trails, we would
expect to see some wind-sheltering on the right side of
the trails descending, depending on the curvature of
any individual trail path along its route.
It is quite likely that the two new Upper level Sud/South
trails, McCulloch and Erik Guay may have the typical
newly rendered mixed particle sizes reflecting the very
first day of use after grooming has milled out the
snowmaking big bumps. We were actually quite pleased
to see the groomed icons beside both these trails as
they are sometime opened in a raw format, however,
opened groomed, they do have a far greater utility
across all skill levels. This is particularly applicable
to confident Intermediates who frequently populate
these trails as they work up in challenge levels.

Please Note:
We have had multiple enquiries concerning the Covid-19 State Of Emergency
declared in Montreal this morning and if that could influence Ski Area Policy.
The short answer is: We have no idea, and there have been no Official
communications of any sort that we are aware of, however...
Public policy history with Covid has certainly demonstrated rapid, and
somewhat unpredictable, and/or unexpected changes. For the sake of
Historical Context Perspective, we are including the following excerpt
from CBC(Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) One alarming part from an
overall point of view is the sudden numeric upward spike where there
have been over 9,000 new Quebec cases in the two days of Monday
and Tuesday.
