in packs of what at times, seem like very “Unique”
groups of fashion statements...

Versant Nord/North Side Trail # 64, Marie-Claude Asselin
is a prime example of a recently groomed trail that escaped
virtually all of the warm/wet and is in fantastic easy Expert
condition as a result of being “out of the way” in both
weather consequence and traffic volume.
Despite the technical requirements generated by the
rapidity of the warm/wet to Sub-Zero C refroze cycle,
there was great joy to be had within select descents
that through either very effective grooming, or favourable
lee-side contour shelter, still had high levels of performance
capability. You just had to be very sensitive to edging skills.
That is somewhat likely to be similar in places today due
to wind exposures where the wide open spaces may not
have held quite so much of the new snow.
Weather Notes:
Considering the 14 day long range outlook...
Today could be the last, or one of the last, pure,
authentic, genuine completely “Winter” Sub-Zero C
days of this ski season.

Conditions Notes:
In The Freshly Groomed:
For today, there should be a substantial, very noticeable
increase in the scope of groomed refinements because
it has been a stable Sub-Zero C for over two days, plus
10cm’s of new snowfall.
The combination of the second grooming cycle and new
snowfall may make it seem like a whole new Mountain
for those that were here for yesterday’s very technical,
very firm ambient base conditions and what we think
will be most noticeable today as an exponentially higher
degree of both ease of effective control moves, plus way
more forgiveness in the trail surfaces.
In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:
The new snow is definitely going to help, however,
wind shaping drifting and/or pre-existing surfaces
that were closed during the weather burp will likely
generate some very individualistic results for today.
What happened yesterday that will be a carry-over
under the new snow, is a soft crust of roughly 5 to
6 cm’s that is not icy as a sheet but has a lot of icy
crystals in it that were loosely bonded together by
warmth. It was very easy to break through, and
fragile enough to break out of, but there certainly
is a “sheet-like” sort-of membrane involved that
does require Expert skills and a fairly high degree
of muscle that is necessary to make forceful turning
engagement.

As you can see above, the surface tension of the sheet
was enough to support the weight of the ski focused
onto the points of the ski brake. That takes a fairly
strong membrane to do that. We have placed a chunk
of the crust between the ski for depth scale, and the
edge of the crust closest to the lower pic frame shows
how easy it is to break through it as well as the nature
of the very soft and deep snow underneath.
All of that is going to be covered by a highly variable
depth of drifted new snowfall. It is the almost endless
combinations of thickness and bulk are going to be the
challenges of muscle and skill necessary to be safe and
have fun today.
“Experts Only” Please... especially where there are “trees”
involved in descent pathways. Turning is very challenging
in many areas.

Please Note: The power circuit issues that kept the
TVG Quad and the Flying Mile Quad off-line all day
yesterday have been corrected. That will be a huge
relief for both Mountain Crews and traffic flow.
