12/2/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

21(*) Open Trails on Summit To Base South and North Sides Of #Tremblant.

Other than the early Temp @ -18C(4 below ZeroF), today is pretty much
going to be a carbon copy of yesterday....

Beautiful.

Currently the breezes are Sou-East, so crossing the Summit from the Duncan
side towards La Crete, Beauvallon, and if they stay that way, the South will
be favoured with Solar Energy you can feel while stationary for a quiet
trail-side break below the Summit level.

Riding up the Duncan Quad will have those breezes almost at your back, so
it should not be unpleasant at all.

The daytime high expected is -10C(14F) so the day will have a very definite
Winter feel throughout. More on the Weather below.

Conditions wise, if you don’t have tuned gear, you’re going to think it’s icy.
The Laws Of Physics Apply, so with significant “Plus” value C, above freezing
48 hours ago, and the immediate following plunge to well below freezing,
the net effect is “Solid”.

If you have good edges, you will still feel the icy substrates, but your degree
of control will be infinitely superior.

What this is, is very “Technical” Skiing.

Beginners will find that Mountain Crews have rendered out the most fine granular
top layers possible on the Green, Easy Terrain, Experts and Intermediates will
realize instantly that in order to hold an edge, very subtle inputs are necessary
to carve, or that Old School Skidded Parallel Turns are the appropriate way to safely
navigate the steepest pitches.

The above Nansen Photo is a prime example of that. To the left, the Nansen Pitch
will have you going at an extremely high velocity in any Carve Mode. To the right,
Nansen Haut has a very fine granular top layer that is actually very easy to maintain
complete control in with a Snowplow shape to skid over, or for Intermediates, to
safely practice the subtle arts of carving edge control.

Skiing Frozen Corduroy.

Acknowledging the perfectly normal Up/Down Thaw/Freeze Thermal Cycles
of late fall/early winter, leaves not only Skiers and Boarders in the position
of making the best of things, but Mountain Crews as well. We like the way
they have groomed the Mountain because when there’s a deep cool cycle
following a warm cycle, freezing is inevitable, so what’s the best way to
present that?

With the existing technology, we think corduroy is the best way to leave
surfaces that are going to become solid. Sharp Edges of Skis or Board can
bridge the fine ridges of the corduroy as they traverse for the optimum bite
possible. Those fine corduroy ridges allow Grip, limited though it may be.

The additional benefit of Mountain User Traffic is that as the sharp edges
shear off the tops of the corduroy ridges, the finely ground snow particles
fill in the gaps and the whole surface becomes covered with this clearly
edge-able top layer. Functionally, it is comparatively thin, so care with speed
and edge set angulation must be exercised in order to maintain grip and control.
That’s the “Technical” part of today’s ideal skill sets.

No, it’s not ready to go Public yet, you can see there’s still finishing work
to do, but “In Motion" Is A Big Deal!

Additional Weather Notes/Graphic:

There are 2 small thermal blips on the future radar for the next week.
Neither of them are significant and the possibility exists that
there may be no plus temps at cooler Mountain Elevations at all.

It’s still “Late Fall”.

Compared to any previous Seasons, Open Terrain this year is still way ahead.

Cosmetically, the Mountain would look nice with more Snow around
but that has nothing to do with the excellent coverage Tremblant Crews
have been able to put in place.

Typical Challenges for this time period will make you Technically Better.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
