T360 Prime-Time Apres Ski Edit Under Construction at 9:35 P.M. EST.
(Please Note: After reading this entry, please use the “Next Topic” button
to follow the evolution of daily conditions.)

It was all of Spring with lingering hints of Winter.

By about 10:30 A.M. the air temps said “Spring”, just about everywhere, and as
the day progressed that became more prevalent, just about everywhere. It simply
got hot. The snow with direct solar exposure surely said “Spring” well before noon
and there was something in the mix that made it relatively high friction, some
were even calling it “Sticky”.

What you needed on the sun-warmed snow was “Pitch”, i.e., slope. Where
you could match the resistance of the sun-warmed snow with slope angle
there was some really spectacular carving performance, like our sample
below Versant Sud/South Side McCulloch.

“Perfect Pitch” is term used in the study of Music, but today at Tremblant,
McCulloch, trail # 18, had “Perfect Pitch”, very near the ideal slope to
virtually offset warmed snow friction, so there was the most fantastic
carving straight down the Fall-Line entire length of McCulloch.

A Quintessential Spring Soft Mogul Day.

There were numerous very soft mogul zones and folks could be heard “Whooping It Up”
literally all over the Mountain. This sample below is from the overhead Edge Sector
Quad as folks were blasting the soft, super-shred bumps on Haute Tension, Trail # 89,
pic-sampled with a reasonably sharp focus on the shred action of displaced snow from
under and behind the skis. These are also the big, soft, chunky, spring bits you can see
in the air behind the skiers left boot.

However, compared to the chunky shred you see above...

There were some remarkably durable, more winter-like snow zones.

This Is A Test:

Can You Name This Trail?

Hint: It’s very shaded, on the Nord/North Side, so it had
virtually no solar energy on it all day long and despite some
ambient warmth in the air, it remained virtually all Winter
snow, all day long...

4 Choices To Select From:

A) Andy Moe.

B) Beauchemin Haut/Upper, along the descending right side.

C) La Griffe.

D) Le Tunnel

(Sorry for the altered white-balance/highlights/contrast/shadow/exposure,
due to very flat, Last Run sunset light quality in order to default specifically
to the surface condition and movement of the Snow...)

Observe the fine size snow particles from the skis and around the Skiers boots
sending snow spray into the air. This is not chunky soft snow shred, this is
fine, crystalline snow spray, way more “Winter” than “Spring” and it was exactly
like this all day long...

The answer in the morning...

The Basis For All You Need To Know.

Yesterday morning we wrote that the weather/trail conditions had
"the potential to tweak what might be the very last day this season
for a bonus extension of pure winter conditions."

We Got All Of That.

And it should extend through until about noon, today.

The degree of secure edge-hold you can imagine above, and is demonstrated
below, was completely universal from wall-to-wall and Top-to-Bottom. Not so
much as as single snowflake out of place. The magic part was the near-ideal
combination of grip, pitch angle and high-speed, low-friction that rendered
Versant Nord/North Side Beauchemin Haut/Upper into one of the most thrilling
technical zones on the Mountain.

However, and very, very fortunately, it is only one of dozens of similar examples,
all there and all still totally intact this morning.

This next performance detail shot is not quite focus or exposure perfect
due to “Last Run” shadows at the bottom of the Duncan Summit pitch, just
above the Devils River entrance, however... what is does convey perfectly is
the all-day light, dusty nature of the “winter” snow we had access to all day,
and should carry forward today, at least +/-, half the day anyway.

If it was really “Spring Snow” you would just never see that amount of
fine snow-dust in the trailing air behind the Skier, it would all be shredded
chunks. You saw a bit more of that on the lower Sud/South sectors by the
end of the day, but the speed remained totally intact the whole way through.

Weather Notes:

Going from -11C to +8 C is obviously going to profoundly
effect the character of the day, Winter morning, Spring afternoon.

Don’t forget your sunscreen!

As for tomorrow... The rain icons are light, so that typically means the
active weather traverses the area in bands. Furthermore, if the cloud
ceiling is low, the active weather tends to move through the regional
valleys and Tremblant’s elevations often mostly, sometimes completely,
escape the wet bits, so there is at least some chance we could be dry
all day. It’s definitely a “Wild Card” scenario though, so you’ll need to
come prepared for anything.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

We think the winter characteristics of groomed trail surfaces
should be evident until at least 1:30 P.M. on the Sud/South
sectors and if we’re lucky, an extension of that until 2:45
or so on the Nord/North.

What we’re hoping for is fully retained speed and we think there
is more than enough residual cool in the surfaces from the overnight
low temps to hold the speed all day. 48 hours ago it was -24 C,
last night -11 C, most of that cold should be quite durable for
a few days of warm.

The Sous Bois/Glades/Hors Piste Report:

There are still zones of untracked Sous Bois, but its been about a week since
the last big snowfall so it is settling under its own weight and that will increase
in effect today as significant humidity is entered into the snowpack with rising
temps.

Still fun, and obviously still lots of reserve, so explore carefully as it is
likely to thicken up in the top layers as the cool fades.

As a utility advisory for readers planning to attend in the near-future:

Once we get into the daily cycles following any daily above Zero C,
spanning overnights with sub zero C, there can be icy bits and the
only effective way to come to the Mountain is with sharp, recent,
well tuned edges. Be advised, come prepared.

Another Utility Advisory:

Make sure your camera device has lots of available memory space
BEFORE you get here. You're going to need it...

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
