A Very Important Trail Grooming Case Study:

Just When You Thought The Conditions Had Peaked...

"Sortir un lapin d'un chapeau."

The Magician’s Of Tremblant Mountain Op’s "Pull A Rabbit Out The Hat”!!!

Trail # 64, Marie-Claude Asselin,
Versant Nord/North Side, Haut/Upper.

We estimate that Mountain Crews have been able to harvest
up to 50/60 cm’s cross-sections of fresh trail-side snow from
both outboard sides, into the middle of Marie-Claude Asselin.

Any seasonal review of any year in this record will include references to
the “Canary’s In The Coal Mine”, Trails # 64, 65, and 66, as indicators of
excellence within the scale of overall groomed refinements.

We were not expecting this one and it is quite near a miracle in our opinion,
but the results are simply outstanding. By harvesting snow from the trail edge
as you can see above/below, Crews were able to fill in the centre of Marie-Claude
Asselin, trail # 64, to a totally flat, level degree of finished width and smoothness that
we think would match almost any previous historic record for this trail we have.

What the before/after shots above do not convey is the depths of the troughs between
the moguls in the “before” side, that had evolved into “knee slammers”. Punctuated
by some occasional rocky bits, MCA had become a very demanding "Experts Only"
challenge.

In a sense, this is an upside down review because we started with the downward
and lower portions of the MCA first, as this is the portion that has the most radical
improvement. We highlighted that with the Skis on the trail edge, first above, in order
to show the relative scale of the vertical cross-section of harvested snow. What we
want to finish with, here below, is the 180 degree, reverse of the top shot, looking
back up the trail so you can see more of the extent of the fabulous work Crews have
done here.

Why This Is "A Hidden Gem”.

Marie-Claude Asselin is a local/regional, Tremblant Regular, favourite, but...
compared to all the big, wide open boulevards, statistically it gets only a tiny
fraction of the “Consumer” traffic. It’s out-of-the-way, and it really flies under
the radar of both general use and popular trail conversation. The fact that it gets
such little attention when it has such technical groomed excellence seems patently
unfair to large numbers of Guests who would not only find it’s quality as a descent
path excellent right now, but they are completely missing one of the most naturally
beautiful sectors of the entire Mountain. The views on MCA are a Post-Card from
Mother Nature herself and missing all that in the sweetness of these final winter
moments is crazy if you have the good fortune to already be here. If you can, go
there as quickly as your skis will take you, it’s exceptionally fine, easy and beautiful.

Marie-Claude Asselin Summary:

“Mother Natures Give And Take”... What we are seeing here are the very real benefits of
Tremblant’s 4 Compass-point sided geography at the closing stages of the season(within
the last 4 weeks), where the combination of solar and air temp warmth have reduced some
direct facing trail coverages, but at the same time, the flip-side shaded zones, facing away
and getting only oblique/indirect sunlight, have held on to sufficient reserves to permit this
example of a most excellent utility upgrade.

Otherwise, there continues to be very fine primary groomed conditions almost(#) everywhere.

(#) We had reports from local friends/regulars that Trail # 12, Erik Guay had some
bare spots/coverage/hazard issues. The feeder corridor that takes you to the
top of Erik Guay is one of the most recent warm wind and sun exposed portions
of the entire Mountain, so unfortunately it has gotten more than its fair share
of warm, erosive weather factors that have affected accumulations. Combined
with recent close to Zero C temps and direct solar intensity, the consequential
loss of coverage may be understandable.

However...
This could actually be a very appropriate extension of our “Mother Natures
Give And Take” point from our MCA, Trail # 64, review above. If you are here
and finding Erik Guay less than perfect, but you altogether miss the current
excellence of Marie-Claude Asselin like our friends above did, you may have
unintentionally lost a very significant compensating asset.

Trail Case Study Sample # 2:

Moving from Expert To Easy...

The entire 6 Kilometres of Nansen Is Excellent.

Nansen runs out to the frame-right of this one above, and we
can tell you for a fact that the whole 6km’s is indeed excellent.
Not so much as a single snowflake out of place, smooth, reliable,
completely consistent and very easy Green flow from top-to-bottom.
If you want to really take your Ski Skills learning up a notch, Nansen
has just got to be one of the very finest places to do that in Eastern
North America.

Below is a Nansen Haut/Upper POV which you’ll see is like an extension
of the above POV in that the north end of Lac T. is clearly visible. The superlative
quality of this Green trail surface is without doubt one of the very most reliable
day-to-day features of Tremblant. You’ll see in this record that we write about
Nansen from the first seasonal moment it opens to the last seasonal moment
it closes for the very same reason, it is just about the best learning friend
anyone who wants to make rapid skills advancement could ever have. It does this
by allowing practice over 6 km’s that is uninterrupted by having to get on
a lift every few minutes, thereby establishing a rhythmic, repetition pattern
of great length and continuity.

Weather Notes:

Compared to the potential warmth that these past couple of days
could have had, Mother Nature favoured a cooler outcome and
that has given us a nice winter refresh, at least on the temp. side.

The long range continues to show a very warm spell approaching,
but what we are happy to see is the light precipitation icons for the
end of next week indicating a minimal forecast influence. Of course
that could all change in any number of ways, but we are only 48 hours
away from the Official start of “Spring”, so it looks like a truly seasonal
change is on the way...

Conditions Notes:

Two weeks ago, everything was excellent,
now due to recent warm/windy weather,
there is still excellence, but it is on a “select”
and "Weather Permitted” basis...

As a hint of winter, scroll back up to the Summit La Crete
Beauvallon/Nansen overview and note the snow-frost
in the trees. That same frosty quality was also evident
on the adjacent trail surfaces.

With the dynamic evolution of trail conditions possible
within either a given day, or range of successive days,
you want to talk to the Summit Info.Ski Crews for the
latest updates. From there, explore carefully, safely find
what works for you and for best results, bring sharp edges
and waxed bases if you want optimal performance.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
