T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit @ 10:51 P.M.

It Was A Quintessential Early-Spring Skiing Day...

The direct solar-facing slopes had to take some heat,
but it was less than we thought it might have been and the
the cold substrates of the base are holding up quite well.

The morning -12C was a really big asset in the retention
of a wintery feel all day and obviously while the eventual
+ 7C that the summit Info. board registered did influence
all surfaces, and especially Sud/South and Soleil Sectors,
that little edge of coolness always seemed present. What
we think was responsible for that was a combination of a
relatively low wind and the cold mass of the conical Mountain
that is radiating some of that cool back out. What we think ends
up happening is the reverse of “Hot Air Rises”, i.e., the “Cool Air
Sinks” side of the “Convection Circuit”. You could almost feel it
in the quiet, shady sides of Versant Nord/North Side. Standing at
either the Summit or the Nord/North Base in the sun was almost hot,
but if you stopped mid-vertical on almost any trail on the Nord side,
a careful observer could feel the presence of a cool air wash. All the
Nord/North Side trails retained a very firm ambient feel underfoot
right through to Last Run which occurred at 17:00 Hrs./5:00 P.M. as
a spontaneous, and very gratefully appreciated, extension of Open
Hours due to the busy traffic volume.

Below is phase two of the Versant Nord/North Side grooming upgrades,
in this case, trail # 65, Banzai, which is also a perfect example of the
cold air wash phenomenon. If you can imagine these surfaces look “Cool”
it is because they are cool, even as the oblique rays of the 4:45 P.M. setting sun
are evident. There is not a single ounce of slushy or wet in this pic anywhere,
despite the +7 C air temp at the top, and it skied winter all day long.

Today Is The Official Start Of Spring.

Weather Notes:

Today Is The Official Start Of Spring.

So, from this mornings actual of -12C, to a
projected +9, that’s a 21C rise in temp’s... wow.

Evidently Mother Nature is confirming that schedule...

Conditions Notes:

From -12C, up to +9 C at Last Run is definitely going to
reenforce the concept of Spring “Arriving".

To begin with, the overnight grooming should have the morning
default to “Smooth” and there should be very good machine
generated loose top layers, however there may be icy bits.

The “Sweet Zone” of not too firm and not too soft should be
approximately between the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 2:30 P.M.
What we like to recommend is either late lunch or no lunch
and ski the period when there are best of both blended conditions
for the day. Obviously, the intensity of the later day sunny heat
will have the most effect on the Sud/South and Soleil Sectors,
so working your way to the Nord/North as the sun moves over
the Mountain will keep you in the coolest snow.

The unknown factor of greatest significance may be traffic potential.
It’s Saturday and that would typically mean it would be fairly busy,
however we have seen some unpredictability in the numbers, arguably
due to Covid-19 Pandemic/travel restricted human health factors.
Without some Official School Breaks happening the way they normally
do, it’s a bit of a wild-card, so the really relevant point in terms of
snow surface conditions is that if there is more traffic, wear may be
more noticeable, if there is less traffic, not so much wear. But... as soon
as the rising air temps and sun get to work and surfaces begin to soften
there may actually be more universal evenness. At that stage, the only
traffic related issues are at lift lines.

Please Note: Weekend Open Hours To 4:30/16:30 P.M
At Sud/South and Nord/North Bases.

We are super-happy to have this one sent to us this morning as we
have every intension of expanding the feature coverage of this Trail 64, 65, 66 Sector.

This grooming from yesterday is just as fresh today and as a low traffic zone,
its an extraordinary opportunity for sweet skiing all day. Just don’t tell anyone else...

In our conditions notes above, we write about moving Nord/North for
some of the coolest snow and this shot of Trail # 93, Superieur, is a
prime example. Very cool snow, and very cool conditions over the
wall-to-wall, total length of this fabulous trail.
