T360 Apres Midnight, Apres Ski Quickie/Update Edit At 12:23 A.M.

Good Night California! Good Morning GMT!

Wondering About Tremblant Today???
Started Out Cool And Wintery, Very Firm... Then...

It Got Hot

How Hot Did It Got?

How warm do you like your “Mashed Potatoes"?

An interesting part is that for the most part, the Speed was still good!

Tomorrow: -6C overnight, rising to +12C afternoon, so on paper at least, very similar.

This is a very important concept for understanding
the endurance of very fine quality, even when Mother
Nature injects a bit of heat...

What we can learn from this pic. above of Versant Nord/North Side
Trail # 69, Rigodon. Approximate time of pic. at 15:00Hrs./3:00 P.M.

A close look at this pic. shows a number of things about the ambient
coolness of the trail surfaces themselves. To begin with, there is some
unknown person appearing at the top who is taking a “Tumble”, i.e. a fall
and you can clearly see a big airborne cloud of snow-dust enveloping
the entire individual to the point we can not tell if it is a Skier or Boarder.
If it was hot, if the surfaces were warm, that dusty appearance(that you
can also see trailing other moving people here), would not be apparent.
It would be big airborne chunks which look, and are, completely different.

Secondly, look closely at the edge-set tracking left in the snow surfaces
from previous traffic. It is all shallow surface movement which has not
significantly penetrated into the surface at all, indicating the solid integrity
of the base here to be mogul-resistant and remain smooth, yet with an
obvious top layer that is very suitable, actually quite close to ideal, for high
performance carving technique.

We found that to be an almost universal characteristic of all of the Nord/North
all day, and even a lot of Sud/South for most of the day, to mid-afternoon.
Of course there were some direct sun-exposed super-soft zones, and there
were also some icy bits, but in balance, still very, very fine, and we expect similar
for today.

Of course there are exceptions... and these two following are mid-afternoon
shots of the Nord/North Expo pitch that clearly illustrate some quite soft
snow-shredding, as opposed to dusting.

The first one is a zoom-in that looks at ski-tracking across a warmed
surface to approximately 15 cm’s of average depth.

The second one below, pretty much captures what we consider the difference between
cool snow-dust and warm snow-shred. Here below we have full-on warm snow-shred
where you can see big, soft chunky bits in the air as this Expert skier blasts through
the soft moguls on the right-descending side of the Expo pitch.

Evidently, the combination of sun exposure and warmer temps closer to base
elevations had a considerably different result here than Rigodon experienced,
even though Expo’s top and Rigodon’s bottom are only a few metres apart in
the Mountains vertical cross-section. It should also be noted that Rigodon faces
close to 40 rotational degrees to Compass North-East, so the suns afternoon
rays there are a lot more obliquely diffused and with “Tipping Points” including
near Zero C , that’s a huge asset.

Weather Notes:

Predictable dynamics of a -4C morning with a +11 C afternoon...

In the long-range, experience shows forecasts can and frequently do, change.
In this case we’d be hoping to see a lot of change in at least the precip., but it
looks like the early onset of spring warmth is a sustained pattern.

Conditions Notes:

This below is a repeat/excerpt from our Apres Ski notes from
yesterday because we think the mechanics of it will apply to today
within a similar degree, considering the forecast temp ranges.

"The morning -12C was a really big asset in the retention
of a wintery feel all day and obviously while the eventual
+ 7C that the summit Info. board registered did influence
all surfaces, and especially Sud/South and Soleil Sectors,
that little edge of coolness always seemed present. What
we think was responsible for that was a combination of a
relatively low wind and the cold mass of the conical Mountain
that is radiating some of that cool back out. What we think ends
up happening is the reverse of “Hot Air Rises”, i.e., the “Cool Air
Sinks” side of the “Convection Circuit”. You could almost feel it
in the quiet, shady sides of Versant Nord/North Side. Standing at
either the Summit or the Nord/North Base in the sun was almost hot,
but if you stopped mid-vertical on almost any trail on the Nord side,
a careful observer could feel the presence of a cool air wash. All the
Nord/North Side trails retained a very firm ambient feel underfoot
right through to Last Run"...

While the temps today do show a slightly higher range than yesterday,
we think the fact that they are still spread from a Sub-zero C base value,
and the wind is forecast to be quite light, means it will end up being much
the same from a functional standpoint.

What that means is the typical probability of early morning icy bits and
the gradual softening of top layers by mid-day and onward, being most
noticeable on Sud/South and Soleil Sectors, while the edge of winter lingers
on Nord/North Sectors that progress to softness at a far slower rate.

------------- 9:53 A.M. Insert Update: ---------------------

This is an important T360 Fan Positive Feedback submission because it
describes a grooming refinement which appears to be double grooming
of some trails, the second of which occurs after the overnight freeze-up.
The end result is that the First Tracks experience is very noticeably improved
from what might have ordinarily been a smooth, but solid descent path,
because the second pass after the refroze gets several cm’s deeper into
the base.
