T360 Mid-Evening Apres Ski Edit @ 9:07 P.M.

With Summit starting at -17C, rising to -6C ...

The Calendar Says “April”, But The Cool Temps
And Very Cool Skiing Said “Winter”!

The Nansen Bas/Lower carving performance sample above is an
example of some of the softest trail surfaces, but even here, there
was still a cool edge and it was not really soft warm snow, it was
more like granular soft winter snow where the soft part comes
from the abundance of loose top layers. Take another look above,
that’s snow-dust, not snow-shred trailing the passage of the skis.

It was warmest at the Sud/South to be sure, but certainly not hot
especially with the wind that was periodically gusty, but never unpleasant.

At higher elevations, there was a very firm base and without fresh edges,
it would have seemed slick with shades of icy, but the grooming last night
did render out very good traction, and if you applied basic technical skills
on even steeper pitches like Duncan or Jasey-Jay, you could make short-radius
parallel turns all the way down with very little need to change course off a centre
fall-line descent.

From a functional/utility standpoint, this past couple of days of cold is, in
our opinion, going to be remembered as a very important reset element,
particularly when you look(below) at the 14 day long range daily high temps.

Starting tomorrow... it’s back to the “Mornings Firm, Afternoon’s Soft” Spring
daily routine as the high/low temps oscillate up/down over the Zero C/32F
freezing point. The low tonight so far showing at -11C, tomorrow’s high at +9 C,
all under another sunny sky! The “Cool” will be around in variable elevation
degrees, until about 1:30 P.M.

Due to the consistent 24hr Sub-Zero C at Mountain Elevations,
today should see the very same type of what we refer to as
“Day 2” of common winter grooming refinements after a previous
warm cycle.

So, yesterday, i.e., “Day 1”, had the great surfaces you see above in the
initial rendering immediately after the temp drop. Then because it remained
sub-zero all day and did not soften to any significant degree, “Day 2”, today,
should see the typical increases in both the depth and fineness of the loose
top layers across the entire array of the Official groomed list.

For sure, after many days of warm and periodically wet previously,
the available terrain has been reduced to the levels you see listed
now, but within this current level of open trails, there is a remarkably
complete coverage that simply stands out in comparison to the receding
snowpack in the bush. So what you end up with is this visual contrast
where the wall-to-wall white of trails is quite distinct within the rather
brown ambient background of a very early arrival of spring.

This very basic foundation within the core boulevards of descent is,
in our opinion, all the remaining evidence of the “Big Bumps” of initial
snowmaking way back in November, December and January, that after
over 120 days of repeated grooming smoothing and compressions, are
so dense that they have been quite capable of surviving all the heat to
get through to this point.

This example below of Versant Sud/South Side Nansen shows this
contrast quite well.

Above: Nansen.
What you see in the foreground as a darker patch is actually a topographical
low contour where the previous warmth generated a pooling concentration
which we are showing to be objective. But... it was virtually the only spot like
this in 6 kilometres of linear descent, and the long way down on Nansen’s full
length is otherwise quite near flawless. If you look up to our carving tracks
you can see right beside the closest Snowboard persons in orange/red, we can
tell you for a fact that those “S” shaped carving tracks were made continuously,
without interruption, for all 6 Kilometres and there was just as much joy and
technical excellence in Nansen yesterday as there was in the seasons finest days,
back in February.

This is why you choose Tremblant. Statistically, a low snow year can happen
anywhere and anytime, that’s how “Averages” come to pass, but even when
Mother Nature holds back, what this illustrates is the beneficial forward planning
of Tremblant’s Mountain Op’s to lay in the early season foundations over the
core descents that will still deliver a great day on the slopes now, despite
unexpected thermal stress.

Conditions Notes:

Groomed conditions quality should start out at very fine to excellent.
The durability, on an all-day basis may be effected by traffic, however...

It’s an early Easter Long Weekend, but the fact that the grass is green
back down in “Theirville”, means that(notwithstanding Covid-19 issues),
Golf Courses have/had targeted early opening dates for this Saturday and
some seasonal sporting enthusiasts have already put winter gear away(?),
so attendance potential may be unpredictable? It may be busy, it would
normally be busy, but weather and Covid-19 resurgent waves are some
contra-indicative factors that could suppress the turnout, we’ll just have
wait and see.

Other wise, a couple of days ago it was +17 C, now it’s -7C, so even with
the overall very fine quality, it is a very firm base and there are still some
icy bits/zones, so you need good, sharp edges in order to optimize safety
and performance equally across all skill levels.

Anything That Has Had “Race Course” Designation Tends To Be Excellent.

Case Study - 2 Pic. Performance Sample - Versant Nord/North Side, Trail # 69, Rigodon.

Here is an example of a designated Race Training Zone, re-opened to
the public in the afternoon. It is typical of the immaculate prep. work
that goes into Race Course trails, so when you see the ropes come off
and reopened, try samples like this as they are usually very fine.

Not difficult to see the performance capability of this descent in these samples.
A very sweet combination of speed and control, not to mention complete freedom
to easily execute any style when there is such a smooth, forgiving surface to
work with.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
