4/9/21 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Late Evening Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 10:07 P.M.

It was really hot at all base levels, but at Mountain Elevations,
it was almost like “Air Conditioning”, as there is still frost
in the substrates and as the wind blew over those cool surfaces
they seemed to chill the breezes, so we ended up having a much
cooler feel than we expected.

This sort-of unexpected cool-wind combination actually seemed to generate
some good semi-firm descent lines, and that’s saying a lot when there is +22C
air floating around anywhere close to a Ski Area. For example, there was a firm,
fast descent line right down the middle of P’tit Bonheur, between about 5 to 7
metres wide, where did that come from? If there was firmness, it would not be
from coldness above, that’s for sure, we think it would have been radiating out
from Mountain substrates below and maybe a less humid wind picking that up
and spreading around, because there was nothing cool at all about air temps in
the surrounding base level civic zones, so what else could it be?

While riding up both the Duncan and Lowell Thomas Quads, there were
distinct moments with wind-facing chilly edge that were a welcome relief
from the base level heat.

Another example of a comparatively dry, cool descent line was Rigodon.
In this looking up POV, you can see how flat and almost mogul free
Rigodon is at Last Run.

Another super-warm day tomorrow... is it possible we could see a similar repeat of
today?

More in the morning, but summary is that we had a surprisingly
good performance day, which would not be a logical result considering
the official high temp values for the day?

40(*) Open Trails on Sud/South and Nord/North Sectors at #Tremblant .

Revised Official Seasonal Closing Date To April 11, 2021
Due To “Weather Permitting”.
(Notice Attached Below.)

Cosmetically, this pic looks very much winter-like, but the one thing
pic’s in this weather can not convey is the heat. It is just plain ole’ HOT
out there! As warm as it is though, Beauchemin has had almost a perfect
relationship with pitch angle, gravity and speed, so heat or not, it’s still
been a “Goto” for thrilling, every turn in the air, bump jump, super fun
spring skiing. Additionally, especially considering the heat, is the outstanding
remaining wall-to-wall coverage. That too is deceptive, it’s just hard to imagine
such a vast expanse of Snow-White could exist in such heat, but there it is.

This is still the context of the current Skiing conditions,
wall-to-wall coverage within the main descent boulevards.

Please Note:

Due to the change in seasonal time-line, yesterday became an off-Mountain
logistics day for us, so the pic’s are all from about 40 hours ago, however with
the established solidity of the base in the areas under review, we do not
anticipate there will be any material difference to today. We are back on the
slopes today, so will make every attempt to update, Apres Ski.

Conditions Notes:

Variable rates of surface friction generated by temps up to +22C,
and directly facing solar radiation.

It’s no wonder the season is coming to an early close when the
weather trends have spiked up to such significant “+ C” values in
24 hour, round the clock intensity. If there had been stabilizing
overnight sub-zero’s it would be a completely different picture,
but that is no longer the case, so all we can say is enjoy it while
you can.

From a purely mechanical point, Ski/Board base wax or coatings
that are designed for warm range temps will be the single best
advantage you can have as any reduction in the friction or drag
created by top surface layer saturations will allow gravity to be
more effective.

The single largest complaint we’re hearing is friction/suction inhibited
speed, but there are things you can do, and our old FIS Slalom Race ski
bases are coated with a hydrophobic polymer that repels surface water
causing friction, so the carving tracks you see below are at sufficient, safe
speed to allow obviously great edge-sets, even on the fairly gentle pitches
of P’tit Bonheur. We can tell you for a fact, making these lapped tracks was
not only fun, but they were done at very good speeds with a workout value
that is definitely at a high level of aerobic output.

Please Also Note: If you read our "Conditions Notes” segment yesterday, we
specifically refer to a 5cm's forward relocation of the binding assembly on the
skis we have been using for this spring time period, which can be seen below.
These Atomic bindings have a small tab on the front of the toe-piece that lets
the whole rig slide forward on the ski's mounting rail and it takes only a few
seconds to quickly perform that adjustment. Moving the bindings ahead by
5cm’s makes these hot rod skis a nimble joy of easy handling in the irregular
tracked soft spring snow.

Additionally regarding the above, in a 45 minute, very vigorous lapping
training exercise session off the Lowell Thomas Quad to P’tit Bonheur,
(in 7/8 minute cycles), we did not see more than 2 people on it for the
entire time.

Summary:

As enthusiastic as we are for Skiing any Open conditions, it does
not feel so much like spring, it feels more like summer and there
comes a heat-point at which it becomes less practical for the public.
If the concept of “closure” means anything, perhaps it’s better to
finish this way rather than having to leave the slopes if they were
more winter-like.

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
