4/10/21 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit @ 10:27 P.M.

+20 C = Super-Saturated, but there was still workable utility
on a select basis, particularly on Versant Nord/North Side.

We are getting to the stage in the final closing 2 day weekend, where
participation is becoming more symbolic than technically fulfilling due to
the trail surface saturation effects of consecutive +20C days. However,
that is not to say there is not a significant aerobic effort required, because
indeed there is, but it is not generally the kind of technical skiing that we
would ever associate with even “Normal” Spring conditions, let alone
anything we’d call “Winter”.

There were examples of the same kind of relatively dry and faster
slopes we had yesterday, like P’tit Bonheur, and there was one
standout that in our opinion was simply the best outright technical
skiing on the Open Mountain today which was Versant Nord/North
Side Trail # 69, “Rigodon”. This trail was groomed in such a way that
the soft, mogul'd upper layers from yesterday were stripped off leaving
the flat base exposed. This base exposure reveals complete surface integrity
over the entire Rigodon descent and because it is solid on one hand, and
exposed to +20 C on the other hand, it ended up with a very shallow, but
quite effective grip layer for edging turns against. In the normal course
of things where you’re trying to preserve conditions for next month or
next week, they would never do that, but in this case it was great for today,
and we only need it to last for one more day, so it’s arguably and actually
the very best thing to do.

For tomorrow, the daytime high is currently projected at a couple or four
degrees cooler, but when that’s at +18 C, and for the last official day of
the season, minor temp differences really don’t matter all that much.

The bottom line for the last day of the Ski Season is...
it gunna be really really hot... again.

Please Note: we are at the attachment limit for this post, so more pic’s
to be added in the morning, hope to see you then!

Despite Mother Nature Putting Eastern North America On Microwave “10”,
There Are Still Great Descent Zones For Closing Weekend At Tremblant!

However...

As Good As Select Photography Can Show Open Terrain
Samples To Be...

Tremblant’s Mountain Op’s Group has very correctly called the
adjustment in final closing to this weekend in our opinion for
both safety and practical access.

So now, it’s a complex scenario of weather, excerpts, access and
technical skills in the final April 10/11 weekend of the 2020-21 Ski Season.

That may seem confusing, but we think we can illustrate that with the
following 3 pic look at sample Versant Nord/North Side Trail # 82, “Expo”.

First, the “Excerpt”. This is a random action shot from the Expo Quad
rising parallel to the mid-pitch. If this was all you saw, getting 3 feet of
clear air over soft bumps would correctly tell you that for those with the
skills and the nerve, there’s great mogul performance here, and there is, but...

Secondly, there’s the “Access”, and that’s where there is more challenge every day
because the ability to get to the remaining descent line you see above is dependant
on a sliver of snow about 2 metres wide in the top left corner of upper Expo that
basically comes in off of the top of Cossak. The excerpt you see above was taken
adjacent to tower # 10 in the overview below, and the access point to the Expo
pitch is just barely visible between the only evergreen tree you can see up there
on the Cossak(left) side, and under the second from frame-left cable.

Thirdly, here is an annotated with red circle pic of the Expo peak crest showing
the only access place we saw skiers entering from, in off of Cossak. It should be
noted that we did not ski Expo ourselves, and it is possible(?) there could be a Skis-off
hiking option across the rocky crest, but we never saw anyone do that and we think
the terrain there is way to steep, uneven and slippery with running water snow-melt to
be safe for ski boots on the exposed ground.

The second similar “Excerpt” and “Access" example we were going to use was Nansen Haut/Upper
to Bas/Lower... However, Nansen Bas/Lower is shown as closed today, so it is already a prime example
of consequence of this excerpt and access concept because while the main descent portion of Nansen
Bas/Lower is excellent, the exit plateau above the Fairmont was unusable from mega-heat by 3:00 P.M.
and we had to take skis off and hike out for 100 metres over gravel that had been thinly snow-covered
and skiable in the morning.

As you can see above, Nansen Bas/Lower was in fantastic condition for virtually
the entire descent, and if you could get there today, we know it would be virtually
the same. It is only the last hundred metres or so to get back to the Flying Mile
Quad Base that is missing now, but after over 2 weeks of summer-like heat, with
very intense solar focus, there is no further human interaction that can practically
mitigate that kind of overwhelming energy force down at the final runout plateau
to the resort village. From that standpoint, the adjustment in the closing date to
April 11 is almost a perfect play for available “access" coverage resources.

Otherwise, the continuing best overall conditions can be found in the Versant
Nord/North Side Lowell Thomas sector where there seems to be the largest
square area of complete coverage, and somehow, by almost miraculous good
fortune, the comparative speed has been so-far retained to the highest degree.

Weather Notes:

Well, with these kind of numbers, you sure do get “Closure” as
far as a Ski Resort is concerned...

Conditions Notes:

Complex mix of surfaces and access on an a la Carte' basis as per
all above.

The only thing you can do with this type of underlaying weather
is to wax or coat Ski/Board bases with “Warm” range products
to try to break moisture and/or saturation generated drag/friction.

There can be significant hazard near or around receding/thawing
snow so navigating slowly in first descents is essential. Conditions
are changing by the hour in some zones so please use caution at all
times.

There are still some excellent spring skiing sectors so if you find
a zone that works for you, stick with it, appreciate it, and be thankful
we get to close with some safe fun for these last 2 days.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
