Just in case you missed it, we posted a great inverted flip shot
in last night’s Apres Ski, so feel free to hit the “Previous Topic”
buttons above or below to go back and check that one out.

Race Training Transferrable Elements To Recreational Skiing.

What You Can Learn, And Do Like Racers

To Benefit Your Own Skills.

Part 1:

We write about Racers training every season because it raises
vitally important points for anyone who actually wants to get
better, or improve their own ski skills and athletic capacity, plus,
the beginning of any season is an ideal time for a fresh commitment.

If you are simply a “Social Skier” who does not care about
being better, you can ignore this bit and go back to slip-sliding
down the Mountain, and perhaps, looking poorly doing it...

BUT... if you really want to get better at this sport, you can start,
you can actually be better, by simply observing Racers in training
and incorporating the things you see into your own improvement
plan.

Part 2:

Not all of these things are complex movement sequences either.
Something as simple as observing that Racers constantly practice
with very simple drills they perform over and over. Many recreational
skiers are content to merely survive and they rarely or never, dedicate
time for specific practice. Racers can typically be found on one
trail, or within one zone, repeatedly cycling descents on the same
tracks over and over again. You can do that easily, and the point is
that by utilizing one trail for multiple repeats, it allows you to
eliminate variable terrain anomalies that would otherwise dominate
your conscious navigational priorities, and allows you to focus on
technique elements without so many navigational distractions.

Much of that repetitive descent cycling is done on trails of
lower challenge levels. Racer kids can ski anything on the
Mountain, but you’ll find them on Nansen, Rigodon, Beauchemin,
Beauvallon, and even P’tit Bonheur, over and over, all season
long. Practicing on easy terrain is something you can absolutely
do and if you try it, you will be able to feel improvements in
your own performance within an hour.

Part 3:

Getting better is FUN! So few recreational skiers dedicate
practice time that its value is lost within the lore of Apres
Ski story telling, but for those who will try it, and stick with
it, the sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction
can be really eye-opening. A frequent comment everyone
who’s ever ridden a chair lift watching good skiers below
has heard is “Boy, I sure wish I could Ski Like That!!!”, well,
with some dedicated practice, the good news is... you can.

Weather Notes:

Compared to a year ago when we seemed to have about 2 weeks
of solid overcast and very dull foggy grey, the extended run of
bright and frequently very sunny days we’re currently experiencing
are a real and happily accepted contrast. Thanks Mother Nature!

Looking at the 24 Hour-by-hour below, you’ll see there is
snow in the forecast for this eve. This is fabulous timing for
snow with the circulating rumours about potential new open
terrain tomorrow. What this means is that if those rumours
turn out to be true, the final product for tomorrow will have
a good measure of natural snow in the finished grooming
and that always accelerates initial high quality.

Conditions Notes:

We have seen... It may be possible... We’ve been lucky at times
(as recently as Opening Day), to have seen mid-day openings of
new terrain. We have no idea if that will occur, but watch for it
anyway as there is so much that seems so close to opening within
the very near-term. We think there are many good reasons to expect
substantial increases in open terrain in the next day or so.

We did a fairly extensive zonal review of important snowmaking
updates in last nights Apres Ski. Please review that because for
those planning attendance in the near future, we think you have
lots to look forward to.

Below is a trail development sample from Versant Nord/North
Side Beauchemin Haut/Upper. Sorry for the very heavy shadows
but this sector is well behind the sun at this time of the year
when the northerly latitudes are the farthest facing away, but
it is still important because when it opens, it will virtually
double the square area of upper Nord/North surfaces in
an instant. This will be a huge relief for P’tit Bonheur that
has taken the entire traffic load so far.

We could see this come on-line almost any time in the
very near future.

We overheard some chairlift feedback...

Anyone that is telling you Tremblant is “icy” is inappropriately
generalizing. For sure, there are some icy bits, more-so at
the end of the day, but any perceptions of icy are directly
related to ski/board edge tune. Look at this:

What you see above is by far the overall condition. It should
be noted however, that there can be traffic generated slick bits
where the loose top layers have been pushed aside. As small and
minor as they are, they can occur somewhat randomly, so another
element of safe control is your personal speed regulation as the
variable thickness in those top layers is very sensitive to turning
force for lateral grip.

Trying to turn quickly with heavy turning force is when those pesky
slick bits are going to be most apparent. Obviously, as above,
tremendous turning energy can be applied, the secret at this stage
is to engage with a subtle rolling action in the initiation phase in
order to assess the grip you have underfoot progressively.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
