T360 Mid Eve. Apres Ski Edit, Under Very Gradual(as time permits) Construction At 8:53 P.M.

The Groomed Opening Of Devils River Today
Was Quite Possibly The Finest “Day-1” For This
Trail In Several Years? Mid-Winter Quality High
Performance, on the first of January.

Quite Exrtaordinary.

It may be foggy, it may be far from ideal for
photography, but for fantastic groomed, high
lateral traction-action skiing, very close to perfect.

It was not winter snow though, the Summit just briefly
broke +1 C, so there was exactly enough thermal force
to generate semi-spring-soft-super-carving, but with a
frosty edge. That combination was just as seamlessly
smooth today, as it will be in mid-Feb.

Cosmetically referring to the scenery, the snow in the
trees remained fully during open hours because there
was no wind to speak of. Another degree or two warmer
and that could have changed, but it did not.

The kind of 1 or 2 day trail break-in that is common with
initial groomed openings, was not even remotely needed
or necessary, right out of the box today, Devils River was
just flat out fast fun.

But Wait, There’s More...

With a touch of safe speed, the natural topographical
undulations of Devils River permitted traversing air turns
that were possible almost the entire descent distance, and
in the tight slalom style turning we did, not so much as a
single speck or shred of ice, anywhere, just pure magic,
dependable traction, from top-to-bottom. A spectacularly
fine and uniquely wonderful hybrid blown/natural snow,
early winter trail opening.

We did a combined trail lap course starting with Lowell
Thomas trail, then took the cat track across to Duncan
and on to the top of Devils River, all the way back down
to the Duncan Quad base. Not hardly a twig or a leaf on
the entire route, not so much as single snowflake out
of place.

Devils River was not alone in this quality, virtually every trail
we were on was similar. The weather could change it all overnight
with around -11 C at elevations, so we’ll have to wait and see how
much “Firm” returns, but in the mean-time...

Overall, we would have to call today the leading candidate
for our informal/unofficial “Best Carving Performance
Day Of The Season, So-Far.” award.

Above: This Algonquin POV is just below the top entrance plateau
however it looks almost as if it is lower due to the valley cloud that
deceptively hides the vertical of this position that would be so
obvious if you could see the contours of the Mountain and the
valley floor. The descent quality of Algonquin is exceptionally
smooth and consistent along its entire length. Standing here
surveying all this, one can only be thankful that the next 4
kilometres of skiing are going to be amazingly fine.

Bonus, it was not busy, not even close. Longest wait of the day: 90 seconds.
Average wait time: between “Ski On”, to less than 60 seconds. Basically, today
was a surprise gift of unrestricted universal excellence.

New Years Day??? Saturday??? Where Are You???

For Tomorrow:

Return To Cool, Return To Firm. Temps cooling down to -10C
at Sud/South Resort Base during Open Hours. Plus, a brisk
winter wind from the North. It’s definitely going to seem very
“Winter-Like” in a big hurry.

Devils River is a local's favourite and rightly so, it has a beautifully
true fall-line and when opened Groomed as shown, it’s undulating
topographical contours combined with its expanding width through
the middle of its descent allow Experts to engage in some thrilling
high performance.

We often use Devils River as benchmark for this portion of the Mountain
because it represents a high degree of Skill level versatility for aspiring
Intermediates who are confident enough to step up their challenge.
Devils River in its prime condition brings out the best in your technique
with a combination of pitch angles and width that allow flexible lines
of challenge adjustment.

Devils River also allows a number of different approaches via
Duncan Haut/Upper as well as from the Lowell Thomas Sector
via the cat track that runs laterally across mid Banzai/Marie-Claude
Asselin.

Weather Notes:

There is a possibility of freezing rain, however that’s still
way better than just plain rain, so things could have been a
lot worse. Freezing rain is not erosive so ultimately, while it
may coat things a bit, where it lands on the ground, it eventually
just gets ground up or worked into the trail surfaces. Goggles
may be the most inconvenient part when it comes to “coating”,
but because the temp’s are so mild, you may be able to get away
with goggles up.

Repeat from yesterday as applicable:
As you can see from the graphic on the lower
right below, Tremblant is almost right on the line
for the forecast rainy component. Here is another
example things could be worse as freezing rain is
way, way better than erosive liquid rain, so being just
a wee bit North compared to many southerly regional
ski areas may save the day for us at this latitude.

Conditions Notes:

To begin with, technically, the skiing is going to be great right across
the entire range of open, groomed trails. Any time the air temps touch
Zero C, at the Sud/South Resort base, the trail surface temps typically
may soften up a bit, but still retain most of the cold frost for the entire
day over the slightly cooler Mountain elevations.

A tremendous range of traffic wear possibilities exists because
it is Saturday, and the New Year Holiday, but there is a pandemic
going on with Covid-19 variants, within a day showing rainy
forecast bits, when there could be many with New Years Eve.
hang-overs. We do not have any idea how that mix of factors
may affect public attendance. If the attendance is lower, the
traffic wear may be negligible, if the attendance is greater,
the traffic wear may be more evident, only time will tell.

Where this becomes relevant is the eventual emergence of
the firm base or icy bits being exposed as traffic volume
moves the initial soft top layers of grooming off to the sides
or down the pitches. Obviously, less wear equals less in the
way of evolving glitches, however, even that could be mitigated
to variable degrees depending on where the temp’s end up
as even a couple of degrees warmer could soften almost
everything.

Talk about “Wild Cards”... Many, many potential outcomes possible.

Be patient out there today. If it’s busy, take a deep breath, relax and
resist the urge to rush or barge the lift lines. Follow the directions
of Mountain staff and just be thankful for another day on the
slopes as curfew’s, restrictions and lockdowns may or can be
soon effecting all forms of public Human activity.

--------- Conditions Caveat: ----------------

Due To Evolving Covid-19 Public Health Policy:
You need to check with the Official Tremblant Resort website
prior to any attendance for current, up to the minute info.
Things could be literally be changing by the day, or even by
the hour, so do not assume anything.
