At The End Of The Day...
Things Got Very Snowy.

Photography was a challenge, but the smiles still came through.

There were some trails that were arguably the very best
they have been since they opened. Versant Nord/North
Side, Trail #’s 59/61 Duncan is one descent path example.

The new snow has made a sudden, positive increase in
relative conditions quality before last run today, so with
a bit more in the forecast, plus tonights grooming, it all
fits into a possible, potential, “Best Of” profile, and we can’t
wait to find out if that becomes tomorrows reality.
For tomorrow... -5 C, sunny, cloudy, sunny, cloudy,
a bit of a flip-flop day, but with all the new snow,
it could be quite spectacular!

The Shapes Of Winter.

The snowfall that we woke up to yesterday has
now been registered on the Official reporting
and the pic. above is our attempt to show it
as it appeared within the Versant Nord/North
Side Lowell Thomas sector where the wind
deposited very favourable accumulations.
The day was primarily foggy, sometimes pea-soup
foggy, so as you can imagine, a bit of a challenge
for photography, also for new or unfamiliar guests
a bit of a navigational challenge. Tremblant’s unique
Info.Ski Crews were working steadily all day and not
hard to understand why with such a thick atmosphere.
1.4.22.Summit.Info.Ski.Station.Consult.In.Foggy.Conditions.d.jpg
There was a substantially larger attendance yesterday than
the preceding days, so the new snow was displaced in
some high traffic concentrated zones as well as the
usual wear and wind blown spots at, and just below
topographical crests, over and down some pitches.
These wind and wear factors evolved into some exposed
slick/icy bits over the firm base.
Prior to the forecast arrival of more fresh snow
during the day today, our best hope for mitigating
the firm base into greater depths of loose top
layers is the grooming. We were very lucky to be
able to get this shot at Last Run yesterday as
Mountain Crews were getting into position to
start the night-shift. This shot was taken on the
descending left side of Versant Nord/North Side
Beauchemin Bas/Lower, on the pitch just below
the entrance to the Edge Sector.

If you look closely above, just behind the track of the
leading machine, you’ll see a very fast spinning cylinder
called the “Tiller” being pulled over the surface with a
very snow-dusty appearance around it and that is what
is doing the main work in terms of rendering out the firm
or icy bits into the wonderful corduroy you’ll enjoy this morning.
Below is a file shot of the Tiller, and in a static position
you can see the rows of very sharp and very strong carbide
steel teeth that chew up the solid bits when the cylinders
are spinning on the trail surface at very high RPM.

When you combine the mechanical actions of grooming
with the continued rise in temp’s, plus the new snow
forecast to start early afternoon, there are very good chances
that even with a trending larger Holiday guest numbers out,
the way the day evolves today could be less prone to showing
wear factors in the latter half.
Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
The vast majority of surfaces within the groomed array
are very fine with all-day durable performance, however
in the spots that are prone to common wear and use
patterns, a lot depends on traffic. The rate or degree
at which those zones exhibit slick or icy tendencies
will be offset by new snowfall though, so in the range
of forecasting possibilities there are wild cards that
make certainty, uncertain. If it snows a lot during the
day, but there’s light attendance, wear may not be evident
the same way it could be if the snowfall is less and
a big number of guests arrive. You get the picture...
Mountain Crews are doing a great job on augmenting
the natural, and developing additional new terrain, so
we’re very, very thankful for that. What we need now is
Mother Nature to bring some more, a lot more would
be nice, but we’ll just have to wait and see how the day
goes before we can report on the trends.
In the Sous Bois, Hors Piste, and un-groomed categories,
here’s another situation where we need Mother Nature to
deliver more snow. The Ski Patrol will keep as much open
as they can determine to be safe, however the coverage is
thin in places and extreme caution with speed and navigation
for hazard avoidance are required on all first pass explorations.
