T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit, Under Construction @ 10:55 P.M.

In our original post below we discussed the need for a second
grooming shift after the big snow in order to offset the softness
that allowed moguls to form yesterday, even on P’tit Bonheur.
That second shift was last night, so we got the benefit today.

Consequently, we are so very pleased to report that today,
the difference another grooming shift made was like night
and day, things were way, way better.

One Example Of Many...

P’tit Bonheur was very very close to perfect today, not so
much as a speck of icy, smooth, fast, easy, a sheer delight
to carve up while it was completely empty because it was a
very light traffic day.

The pic. above was taken close to last run, so the shadows
are well established as the sun sets behind the Summit, but
you can still see the carving tracks, and we can tell you for
a fact, they go without interruption, seamlessly linked, from
top to bottom. It was so fine, we have awarded it our “Trail du Jour”
award. From yesterdays moguls, to todays excellence, a suberb
example of the kind of dramatic improvement one more
grooming shift can make after a big snow event.

We will have more on these types of trail enhancements
tomorrow morning. What you need to take away tonight,
is that as there were dramatic upgrades today, so there
will be even more, tomorrow.

Regional Experts Can’t Wait For This One...

It’s going to be very cold tomorrow, you’ll need to be
ready for that. At least the forecast has been bumping
upward over the last 24 hours, so now showing just
-22C, not -25C as was the original forecast. Still cold.

Tremblant Is Spectacularly Beautiful.

Here is a “Groomed, Front-Side Carving Performance” sample:

We are intentionally featuring Versant Soleil Algonquin
as an informal case study because it is way underutilized,
and way under-appreciated as a superb multi-skill-level
trail that despite it’s “Green” easy designation, can offer
challenge to all. For Experts, that can take the form of
absolute centrifugal carved turning force, where it is
possible on this trail, when safely alone(which is most
of the time), to make Slalom or GS style carving turns
that we estimate can exceed 1G of lateral force. Additionally
if you do Algonquin’s roughly 4.5 kilometres in a continuous
SL carved sequence without stopping, you can render any
recreational skiers quad muscles into jello with 1 or 2
energetic paced laps. Keep in mind that by making full
and complete “S” style carved turns, you can virtually
double the running length of this trail and SL style is
not all that fast in a linear sense related to the fall-line,
because of the lateral back and forth.

For Beginners, the value of such a gentle, rolling descent
of this width and length can not be overstated. A day of
learning circuits on Algonquin will make you a better skier. Period.
Same goes for Intermediates.

Weather Notes:

A bit of a wild ride for the World Cup Athletes over the
next 36 hours. Tomorrow’s first tracks at -21C, that’s
a nippy start. The super chilled snow quality may be
different than some competitors are used to. That could
be an advantage to the Canadian team that are very
accustomed to training and practice in these temps.

Conditions Notes:

What we’re hoping for today is a greater degree of refinement in
the groomed trail category which needed at least an extra day,
maybe two, in order to get closer to ideal compaction of the loft
in the new snow.

We had thought that was possible for yesterday, but the reality was
that there was residual softness from more snowfall depths than
could be achieved with just one grooming pass, so even though the
traffic was light, moguls and deeper tracking left a lot of uneven
surfaces that elevated challenge across all skill levels. There were
even moguls on P’tit Bonheur which is definitely not usual.

“Too Much Snow” at once is both never a problem, or a happy problem
at a Ski Resort, so we just have to be patient while Mountain Crews catch
up with it all.

Additional operational complexity also exists now with the running
of the F.I.S. World Cup Freestyle Mogul Competition on Versant Sud/South
Side Trail # 28, Flying Mile. This is a broadcast televised international
sporting event, so literally, the world will have a window into conditions
here and the logistical support for an event of this magnitude is immense.

Otherwise...

The biggest overnight advantage was within the Sous Bois/Hors Piste
and Un-Groomed categories where particularly on Versant Nord/North
and Edge Sectors there was a very good addition of depth that was
augmented by wind-shaped drift-in. Experts were delighted and
because the traffic was so light, there should be fresh lines there
for at least today, and maybe tomorrow as well for the start of the
weekend.

Above is a second version of the Proof Of Snow we ran
in last night’s Apres Ski. The closest ski(Atomic 2015 Redster
SL F.I.S. Norm's @158 cm’s), was placed by hand as gently
as possible showing several successive tip placements to
illustrate compressibility. The far ski was dropped from
30cm’s/1 foot, in order to show both the loft and softness
of the snow as it is in its freshness. The ski poles are placed
to illustrate the snowpack depth in a way that is very unscientific,
but does convey a relative concept comparing vertical and
horizontal axis where the horizontal reference is 122cm’s/48
inches. Please note that the depth is a random sample and may
not necessarily be accurate because of icy substrates in the base
that the pole could not be punched through, so we don’t actually
know if its touching the ground here. It does however show very
well that there is an abundant depth of undisturbed powder
snow in this open Sous Bois zone. Even with skis on, this
is very deep snow to try moving through, so bushwhackers
have nothing to complain about here!
