T360 Prime-Time Apres Ski Edit, Under Progressive Assembly @ 9:17 P.M.

We were wrong on several forecast accounts today,
sorry about that. Here’s the detail...

Firstly, the weather. We did not expect the degree of
cloud fog density. From the top down to within metres
of base levels, fog and often, very thick fog.

On top of that, we did not expect the type of percipitation
that was a damp, pellet-like, snowfall coating goggles and
people, making for descent speeds that were often reduced
to a crawl in order to navigate safely.

We tried, and observed many others trying, to ski
with goggles up, but the pellet-like snow was the
equivalent of BB’s on bare eyeballs, a continuous
stinging impact that was unsustainable.

The fog and airborne particulate were variable
in intensity, mostly from dense, to really, really dense.

Statistically, and fortunately, weather days like this are
very rare, so we just take a deep breath, and hold on for
tomorrow.

But Wait, There’s More!

The “weather” was just the beginning. What also happened
was the loss of the main Quebec Hydro power source.
The Duncan Quad and the Soleil Quad went down and that
put an end to practical access due to the immediate traffic
pile-ups at the other lifts like the Expo Quad and the Lowell
Thomas Quad.

Quebec Hydro Crews came to the rescue, however,
restoration of lift function was not possible during
open hours, so unfortunately, the utility of the day
was greatly compromised.

From a clinical standpoint the skiing was good, but
thicker than we expected because there was rapid
accumulation of a damp, relatively high friction snow
that could not be offset by speed, as you could not see
far enough ahead to use any speed safely.

We can tell you for a fact that we were right about the
cold retained in the base, and to a degree, we think that
will still be a stabilizing component in the blended
grooming rendering for tomorrow morning, particularly
considering the temps are headed back down to -16C,
which is likely going to help freeze-dry the humidity
out of the new snow too.

In its totality, today might be considered by some
to be a textbook example of “Murphy’s Law”, i.e.,
“What Can Go Wrong, Will Go Wrong”, in this
case, with multiple co-factors. In that sense,
it is also a very clear illustration of how quickly
exceptional potential can become exceptional
challenge when unfavourable circumstances collide.

As eternal optimists, we can only say...

“Tomorrow is a new day”, and hope for the best.

Everything about tomorrows quality is dependant
on tonight’s grooming, and for that Mountain Crews
certainly have a big task in front of them.

Here is One Of The Main Reasons
For The Excellence You’ll Find At
Tremblant Today.

(A second reason is that it is 20 degrees C WARMER now,
than it was 24 hours ago. That’s a very big positive difference.)

Vast expanses of immaculately groomed and
super-smooth trail surfaces with comparatively
little traffic have been the predominant mode
of daily use over a traditionally busy Holiday
period, which would normally be ending today.

“Normal”? What is “Normal” now? Kids in many
jurisdictions are being held out of schools, and there
are many with “Work From Home” mandates, all because
of Covid-19 rapid transmissibility, so we may see
more local/regional folks out in the near-term future,
but for today, it is likely that the destination travellers
from the extended region have, or are all now, on the
way back to Theirville.

Weather Notes:

Wow... 20 Degrees C Warmer Than Yesterday At This Time!

Great weather news for “User Friendly” today, however...
it is a “One Day” Mother Nature feature as it is a short-lived
blip in the thermometer as the temps. slide back to the
cool side tonight.

We are including a repeat graphic from yesterday,
second below, for story-line continuity because from
an overhead Continental perspective, this little burst
of warmer air is literally a “Finger” shaped protrusion
of swirling southern air that is whipping across
our region in a very brief timeframe.

Conditions Notes:

With a +20C warmer temp profile, everything is going to seem
easy compared to yesterday in terms of just being comfortable
with the ability to stay outdoors continuously.

As far as trail surfaces, the cold-snap can only make the snow
feel silky smooth as the consequence of an exposure process
we equate to “Freeze Drying”, so like your container of Freeze Dried
coffee, the crystals have close to zero internal humidity and
the trail surface quality relies completely on the mechanical bond
generated by multiple passes of 12,500 Lbs. grooming machine
to pressurize the top layers of snow into a cohesive finished surface.

This is what we call cryogenic snow. It is unique and distinct from
all other snow that has internal humidity. It makes lousy snowballs
but it skis like velvet.

Another way to understand it is the opposite of “Warm Air Rises” which
is the way most people think about convection. That opposite is that
“Cold Air Sinks”, so basically because the Mountain is shaped like a
cone, the cold in the surfaces radiates outwards, cooling the thin
immediate air layer over the snow, and that cool air washes down the
slopes, helping to retain the excellent glide quality for the entire day.

Bottom line on this point is that the chill in the hill from -26C has not
gone anywhere and it will be there all day as a result of thermal momentum,
but the warmer atmosphere is going to make it ridiculously easy to use it.

For all the synergistic possibilities in this scenario, we think there
could be extraordinarily fine conditions, especially when you add
in the other very positive co-factors of an additional nights grooming
cycle and the forecast arrival of another 5cm’s of freshly falling snow
expected during open hours today.

In the Sous Bois, Hors Piste and Un-groomed, better can
only become more better, which is bad english, but great
Expert skiing, especially in the Sous Bois zones of the Edge
sector.

Traffic-wise, for sure we’ve seen some lift lines, but for
the most part they have been really quite short. For today,
like most of this Holiday period, there is some probability
traffic will be light, especially after the noon hour when the
Urbanville commuters hit the race track, er, highways, for home.
We could be wrong, but we’ll report on that later.
