If You Think It’s Too Cold For Skiing,

You Can Go And Fly A Kite...

If you didn’t look at the thermometer, you’d think it
was a perfect, easy, sunny, gorgeous winter day...

But... As soon as you stick your head out the door,
at least figuratively, Mother Nature is going to slap
you right on the nose, unless you have every single
square cm of skin covered. As a matter of what
may seem to be obvious fact, you indeed need to
be totally covered without so much as a sliver of
exposed skin. The tip of your nose or that tiny gap
between your helmet and the top of your goggles
can end up being an experience of frostbite that you’ll
feel for the next 2 weeks. Cover it up, tighten it up.

You need to tighten up all the gaps and spaces
in your outmost layers because at descent speeds
not only is there wind chill, there’s wind pressure,
and that will force cool into places you never thought
possible.

On the flip-side, if you are prepared, if you are
of sturdy stock, if you are of hardy heart, mastering
a cold day is tremendously satisfying. Clinically,
the skiing is usually between very fine and excellent.
You will inhale more fresh air than city folk get in a
week, and afterwards, you will have a very healthy
appetite, and you will sleep like a rock.

Snowmaking Refinements

Mountain Crews are using the cool streak to
augment multiple zones of seasonally strategic
importance. We recently mentioned that with
Nasesn Bas/Lower, and todays example is
Versant Sud/South Side Summit level Erik Guay.

This specific addition may benefit the upper
portions that traverse under the Summit
observation deck, across the top of Vertige
and Zig-Zag that were very sensitive to thermal
spring erosion factors last season, so if this effort
is proactive, we support that objective completely
not only here, but anywhere they deem necessary.

Weather Notes:

This is, at least initially, if not all day, a “No Go” zone for
little children, elderly, or any other weather sensitive
individuals such as with asthma or other respiratory
conditions where breathing function can be impaired
by extremely cold air temp’s.

This is also a Frostbite Warning Zone. Zero Exposed Skin.
Frostbite can happen to tip of nose, or to gaps between
helmet and goggles to forehead in as little as 90 seconds,
especially where descent speed into head-winds can
generate effective wind-chill values far below any static
position.

We want to remind readers of 4 things:

Firstly, that this is unusually cold. For support on
that comment, we will refer you to the “Averages”
for day/night temp ranges in the 14 day long range
graphic below. The 30 year average high temp for
today is -3 C, not -30 C, so this is very unusual.

Secondly, both the warm and cold spikes so far this
season, including this cool one, have been short, thankfully.
It is not unusual to have winter “Cold-Snaps” or
“January Thaws” that can go on for days, and so-far,
we’ve just not seen any extremes for much more than
hours or a day.

Thirdly, the long range forecast is highly subject to
change, so even though it looks like a stretch of cool
in the future, just wait and see, chances are that
may change.

Fourthly, any place on Planet Earth that is cold enough
to support a “Ski Resort” can, and will eventually have,
unusual periods of inordinate cold. Polar vortex phenomena
happen on a Global level with periodic frequency.

Conditions Notes:

-------- Conditions Caveat ---------

It is not wise to sugar-coat cold. Frostbite danger exists and
extreme care at this temperature is vital for personal safety.

Exterior garments, and/or sufficient layers designed for Arctic
exposures are required. We recommend deferred early attendance
until such time as temp’s show an established rising trend towards
the mid-day forecast high.

--------------------------------------------

Clinically, the Skiing will be very fine, although at this temp
it may produce a noticeable level of friction underfoot, at least
to begin with, because extremely cold snow does not have the
same functional properties as snow that is even 3 or 4 degrees C
warmer.

Basically, on a microscopic level, Skis/Boards work like Skates
on ice. Within normal winter ranges, edges develop a molecular
thin layer of water as a consequence of surface friction and that
acts as a lubricant to facilitate glide. Below the low -20’s C though,
it is too cold for that physical process to occur, so very cold snow
can become rather like you would imagine what it would be to be
skiing on sand. If there is an advantage in that, it would be that
very steep pitches become much easier due to drag. Lesser pitches
may feel quite slow, and plateaus may need either pushes with poles
or propulsive skating action.

As temps rise through the day, this dry friction may go away if the
temp rise is sufficient to get back within normal function. Temp’s
rising from the -30C mark may need to go up towards -25/24C,
or so, before this becomes evident.

For Sous Bois/Hors Piste and Un-Groomed, due to the fact that
these trails are virtually all Expert trails/zones, they are more
steeply challenging to begin with, so these very cold temps.
actually make them quite easy if there is any natural speed
control assist.

What really effects the outcomes for today is “Practicality”, in the
sense that being able to endure these temps for extended periods
of time is totally dependant on being able to stay warm enough
in the extremities to not risk personal injury from frostbite.

Of course, “Normally” you could come inside to warm up, on every
run if necessary, however with a Covid-19 pandemic around, there
is some reluctance to mingle in interior spaces, so that may cause
a reduction in local and regional day-trippers who perceive deferral
in attending to warmer weather as a practical option.

It is highly probable that attendance will be light.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
