Lots Of Great Tremblant News!

For Starters...

Today Saw A Good Measure Of The Trail Optimization
We’ve Been Hoping For Since The Last Big Snow.

- More New Fresh Snowfall During The Day.

- Nansen Reopened From Summit To Base.

Below:
Here is a surface excerpt from Nansen Bas/Lower.
What you see is the groomed compression of light, dry,
super-chilled snow that has very forgiving performance
properties that simultaneously can support the carving
technique you see above, as well as a skidded/sliding
technique with equal ease. In the latter regard, it has
what we call excellent “Shear” properties that you can
see below in the wafer-like shapes being displaced by
skis moving laterally with almost no resistance.

This is the quality of the surface refinement that
was common within the groomed array over practically
the entire Mountain.

It snowed and was overcast over the Summit and Versant Nord/North
side slopes for almost the entire day, the Sud/South Bas/Lower levels
saw some brightness, even the odd patch of blue sky, but for only
brief moments.

Even after a full day of enthusiastic use, Johannsen to the
Resort base maintained smooth, super-shreddable surfaces
that could hold aggressive edge-sets without fail.

Due to the fact that we are headed into an extended period
of sequential days of steady round-the-clock sub-zero C’s,
we can expect incremental escalations of quality with each
successive grooming night-shift. Periodic new snowfall forecast
will only take those improving conditions and make them better.

Look at the 14 day long range forecast, it may seem cool,
but we can tell you for a fact the Skiing will be very cool.

Regional Tremblant Fans... Plan Accordingly.

More in the morning...

80(*) Open Trails On All 4 Sectors At #Tremblant .

The new snow is piling up everywhere. What you see above
is a very light, dry crystal that has a considerable degree of
“Loft”, a great deal of softness, and very little capability to
support weight on its own. The horizontal ski was dropped
from our standard 30cm/1 foot height above the surface
and with the fluffy absence of any internal humidity, the
snow simply blew aside allowing the ski to sink well below
the surface. The horizontal pole tells even more about the
lightness of this snow though, because most snow will support
the weight of a ski pole across the surface if it is gently placed,
not this stuff though. It has close to zero surface tension and
as gently as we possibly could set it on the surface, its own weight
caused it to sink as you see. That is unusually light snow.
It skis like satin underfoot, very smooth, very grippy where
groomed.

It is moderate in friction and the speed is still good, but it is
not as inherently fast as we thought it might be. The net effect
is a highly desirable blend of speed and control over steeper
pitches that simply makes carving easier to maintain.

As a consequence of these performance qualities we gave our
unofficial “Trail du Jour” award to Versant Nord/North Side
trail # 73, La Traverse in the Lowell Thomas Sector because it
was an almost flawless example of a Black Diamond Expert pitch
that can be prone to icy bits, without a single speck of icy that
we encountered. Wall-to-wall, top-to-bottom, totally reliable
traction that could hold as much edge as your skills and muscle
can make.

We are running a repeat pic. from last nights Apres Ski that also
illustrates the general level of photography challenge, obviously
large, so it is literally the only La Traverse pic. we have for it that
turned out useable.

The grooming integration from previous days held the base quality
all day, however the new falling snow did begin to accumulate to
quite some depths in places, but... even though it looked thick, that
thick appearance was deceptive(#) because lightness never amounted
to any significant resistance and at virtually any speed, your skis just
blew through it without any feeling of choppy impact feedback at all.

This pic below is as close as we can get to illustrating this thick but light,
dusty quality that developed over the course of the day.

Had there been any significant humidity in this snow
the thickness you see above would have made for
some tracked up choppy resistance, but there was none.
If you could imagine skiing with your eyes closed, you
would have felt almost nothing, and that’s why we say
(#)“deceptive” because the minds eye perceives tracked up
thickness as wanting to be choppy, when virtually none of
those sensations existed. It was that light.

As a component of an integrated groomed product
this morning, it should help to form a superb overall
upgrade to conditions that were already very fine to
begin with.

What Did We Learn In Class At Tremblant?

This Sud/South Side McCulloch Summit pitch sample
with a Ski School Instructor and student shows us that
what looks choppy does not always feel choppy if the
snow is light and dry enough.

Weather Notes:

Have you ever heard of a weather forecast that was wrong?
This might, maybe, could be, one of those times because so-far,
it is completely overcast and snowing. It may well change,
or be different regionally, but at the Sud/South Side resort
base, the thickness of the grey snowcloud looks quite durable?

As far as the long range outlook, it certainly seems as though
we’re in for a span of below average coolness, however it should
be noted that these metrics are always subject to change and
depend on a very big “if...”. If the cold period does happen, we
will cheerfully accept every moment of it for both the uniquely
fine performance of cryogenic snow, as well as the beneficial
addition to the frost induction into the core of the Mountain
which will become a time-released storage of refigerant offset
effect to the eventual onset of Spring.

Conditions Notes:

In the Groomed array, very fine to excellent
across the entire range of skill levels for those
trails with a posted groomed icon. The grooming
night-shift should add a noticeable degree of
compaction over the new snowfall so there could
be significant potential for universal smoothness.

There may be a continued moderate friction level,
however we do not see that as any disadvantage.
For Beginners and Intermediates, it simply means
speed and directional control inputs may be easier
to initiate and maintain. For Experts, steepness
has slightly less gravitational pull and carving complete
turns with reliable traction is more universally possible
without having to skid into parallel mode so often.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Un-Groomed, please
refer to the “Proof Of Snow” above. Light, dry,
powder snow ranks at pretty much the top of
the desirability scale, but we are still only at
early season technically, so initial explorations
still need to have a focus on potential glitches
which as the snowpack builds, become less and less.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
