84(*) Open Trails

This Is Not A Fancy Action Shot, However...

It Is A Primary Reason For The Excellence
You Should Find At Tremblant Today.

The amount and quality of the snowfall that has arrived
in the past 36 hours has exceeded forecast expectations
but is within the potential we though was possible for
this system, especially over the Mountain itself, as we
explain here, below.

Yesterday at this same hour, Tremblant forecasters said
“We got 1cm, and we can expect a few more flakes today.”
We wrote... "some of the forecast suggests to us
that we could still get significant snowfall.”

18 cm’s is quite a bit more than a few flakes, so we
feel somewhat vindicated in our optimism for significant
snowfall, and you can see the evidence above yourself.

So, what we have here is not a crystal ball that gives us
any special insights, it’s simply an acknowledgement that
observing the tipping points in any forecasting models that
could lead to “more”, frequently occur, particularly over
Mountain elevations, as compared to Base/Ground levels.

In this case, we specifically consider that Tremblant received
the beneficial product of an Orographic snowfall event that
generated this localized abundance. (Please Note: We are
preparing a graphic for this that we hope to include Apres Ski.)

Above: Brand New Trail Opening, Versant Sud/South Side
Summit Sector Trail # 12, “Erik Guay”.

We have featured the development of this trail opening
over the past couple of days as a case study sample and
we are very happy to report that it is exactly in line with
our forecast. Smooth flat and level, are a great basis for
any groomed trail opening and this one certainly delivered
all of the very fine performance quality we anticipated.

The “Day-1” surfaces were a bit of a mix of machine worked
characteristics that included the variable particle sizes you
can see above, in addition to the very firm initial base that
can also be seen above as a tan coloured band running across
the picture frame below the top border. In that sense there
were some firmer, slicker sections, but from a descending
perspective they were very easy to see on approach so it
was simple navigation to either skirt around them or pass
directly over without any fuss at all and we would summarize
Erik Guay’s opening as very high quality. As mentioned
yesterday, this trail should respond quickly and favourably to
break-in traffic, more natural snowfall and repeat grooming
cycles, so literally better every day for the foreseeable future.

When the Open Trail list is changing by the day,
sometimes more than once, and the weather is
very active, unique challenges can be generated
within posted trail ratings. For “Best Results”,
you want to consult with these folks!

The always cheerful Tremblant Info.Ski Crews,
are there for the express purpose of optimizing
your day on the Mountain. Period.

The main station of the Info.Ski Crews is at the Summit,
between the Gondola and Lowell Thomas Quad off-load
zones/peaks, where they stand by posted trail maps and
special Mountain utility notices so that you can have the
latest and best Intel regarding trail/lift access and skill level
suitability selections.

They can also be found circulating around the Mountain,
as well as individually placed in strategic locations when
there are unique events or where traffic management may
be required due to operational circumstances. Never hesitate
to talk to them, your day will be better for it.

Conditions Notes:

Where freshly groomed, there will be vast tracks of excellence.

The all-day durability of conditions will be directly proportional
to traffic volume over rates of groomed compaction and pitch
angle, so for today it is quite likely that there may be some
substantial evolutions in either or both steeper sections, or
where traffic converges/concentrates, or trails intersect.

Our standard reference for maximized new snowfall grooming
integration in a single accumulation event is 10cm’s. Anything
over that can have a tendency to be prone to softness and traffic
generated mogul formations due to the uncompressed total amount
of loft in the new snow, and it may take a second day’s grooming to
get that surface density to the point that it is a bit more mogul resistant.

For that reason, you want be sensitive to evolving conditions
and you also want to start easy and work up, only when muscles
are thoroughly warmed up. Soft snow is often a bit of a workout
and in this specific case we’d say that is very true.

For the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed categories...

Please refer to the top photo in this post. The snow you see there
is surprisingly light and dry. We think that is a function of being
formed high in the atmosphere above the Mountains elevations
where we theorize there were far cooler temperatures aloft. The
Sous Bois snow is easy to move through, however there may be
unique variations of depths within any given descent line that add
extra challenge because of drifting, at or around topographical
contour features.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
