3/24/23 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Middle Of The Night Shift Apres Ski Edit At 1:15 A.M.

It was a spectacularly gorgeous, very photogenic,
sunny day at Tremblant.

However...

We were wrong on several aspects of the ski conditions
forecast for today.

Firstly, it was a lot cooler at Mountain elevations
than we expected. We never saw over -4C at the
Summit.

Secondly, while obviously sunny, it just did not
build thermal energy. There was a cool, if not cold
touch in the wind, and that probably had a lot to
do with that. We think the coolness may have
descended from winds aloft at much higher altitudes
over the summit.

Thirdly, and as a consequence of 1 and 2, the degree of softening
did not occur. There was some at base levels, but way less than
we though would happen. Additionally there were both icy and
chunky bits, so altogether we did not achieve either the high
performance or forgiveness levels we though would be possible.

There was still loads of very fine technical surfaces but you had
to be very conservative with gradual applications of turning
energy or risk loss of traction.

A reminder that the dominant hand of Mother Nature rules.

A reminder that Mountain Crews had everything groomed
smooth, and that’s always a great default when weather
variables are beyond human control.

Tomorrow should see a marked improvement with a day-2
grooming cycle that typically reaches deeper into the solid
base to render out more uniform skiable top layers.

What we have today should eventually become
an extension of...

Yesterday... absolute proof that even on a
day with adverse weather, there can be superb
technical trail excellence and loads of fun exploring.

The Trail Network Got Up To Roughly + 2C,
While The Summit Got Up To Zero C Yesterday.

Now It’s -8 C, So The Laws Of Physics Apply...
probably up to just around noon.

We would anticipate changes to the Official open
trail list during the course of the day due to highly
evolutionary effects on surfaces from temps crossing
over the freezing mark, plus the as yet unknown
amounts or intensity of solar energy from forecasted
sunny periods.

Weather Notes:

At the time of this posting the Summit is showing -8 C
so even if base levels get into the plus C range, it will
still be quite some time before any warmth can work into
elevated surfaces. For all those high performance fans,
patience will be required until the initial solid gets
evolved soft, and that may not be until well after lunch.

Conditions Notes:

With the temp profile indicated in todays weather data
it is very likely that there may be a lot of “solid” in the
mix today.

The default is groomed absolutely smooth though, so
no matter what you find in the degree of refroze, as
long as you have good edges, the smoothness makes
anything easier to handle. We can only hope the sun
actually comes out and gives us a touch of softening.

If, if, if... we get enough thermal input, we could eventually
see another afternoon of spectacular best of season carving
performance magically appear, maybe...

Sharp edges required for optimized safety and fun.

Analogy:

Do not bring your Ferrari to the track with flat tires...

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.
