Le Circuit 2019 Summer Classic Motorsport Event @ Tremblant

Le Circuit, July 26/27/28, 2019,

Summer Classic Motorsport Event.

We are big fans of Le Circuit so we were excited to
be back for this event after a couple of summers
that we’ve had to be away.

From our base in the Old Village of Mont Tremblant,
it’s an easy few minute walk to Chemin Seguin(@
the “T” intersection on Chemin du Village/Daniel LaChance),
to get through the front gate with Press Pass and this
below, was the very first Paddock car we saw.
You know it’s going to be a great event when you start with this...

From Le Mans, to Daytona, Sebring to Watkins Glen,
Mosport to Nurburgring, around the world, Aston Martin
is one of the most successful and well recognized names
in current GT technology, so it’s super interesting to be
able to get this close to a Global icon around the corner
from home.

The Summer Classic at Le Circuit is a regularly
scheduled annual event and while the dates may
vary with individual summers, it’s a regular July
tradition that draws most significantly from regional
racers.

The way our time commitments for the weekend allowed,
we were able to be there on the 25th and the 27th, so
all the pic’s in this topic are from those 2 dates.
Racers begin to show up before the Official Schedule starts
to get in testing and practice and within minutes of arriving
on the 25th, we get to see the sights and sounds of high
performance machines on the track.

We enjoy watching fast race cars as much as anyone, however
we are equally fascinated by the technical side of the sport in
terms of how these machines are designed, built and serviced.

Above and Below: Racing is directly responsible for many of the
safety advancements we all benefit from in our own road-going
vehicles and there aren’t many better examples than the development
of brake performance in racing which could be argued as one of the single
most important technologies for accident avoidance applied to any vehicle on
public roads.

The Ferrari pictured in this 3 picture series is an excellent example
of not only that “Trickle Down” technological benefit, but just how
close you can get(if you want), to see the inner workings of all the
race cars in the pits at Le Circuit.

In this specific case, “Disc” brakes, invented for racing, have
made every vehicle safer. We have reported in previous Le Circuit
event articles on Ferrari brake component development and as we
expand this article, we will relate some update observations for
a “Then and Now” context that will span our articles.

The interesting bit about the Ferrari brake components shown above
is that we had seen this same vehicle in previous seasons Le Circuit
and at that time it was quipped with carbon-fibre composite brake rotors.
At the time we did an expanded overview of the “Trickle-Down” benefit
of technology that filters into regular production vehicles from this
type of exotic materials use that can enhance safety performance despite
the almost stratospheric price of the initial development costs that racers
will pay for fractions of a second improvements in lap times. What we noticed
in seeing the car again is that it is now running steel brake rotors that theoretically
would be less effective than the carbon’s, so we asked the pit crew why the
change was made. The answer we got was totally logical, very reasonable
an completely justifiable... roughly speaking... 98% of the performance,
at about 10% of the cost. The steel rotors are a tiny fraction of the mega-dollars
the carbon units cost, so for the similar performance, it is a cost saving
measure that is a significant benefit in team operating expenses. In the case
of “brakes” on a race car, arguably(next to tires), the most frequently wear-consumed
and routinely replaced components on the whole car, especially meaningful. This
is the kind of practical, real-world compromise that all automotive components
can be subjected to across the spectrum of user applications.

When you go to the Le Circuit website during any given event,
the list of entries is published prior to the start, followed by the
finishing results after the racing is over.

Please Note:
This topic is going to be under evolutionary construction
for a few days as we are multi-tasking yet another busy
travel summer, so thanks for your patience as we add
content here over time.
