Le Circuit, Le Sommet de Legendes, Can-Am Feature Racing.

Post by T360 »

The weekend of July 13th and 14th, 2013 was filled with
excitement for the Fan's of Vintage Car Racing at Le Circuit.

A couple of important points:

1) The first Can Am Race ever held, way back in 1966, was here at Le Circuit!

2) It never fails to impress us that design elements used to
improve race cars years, even decades ago, make their
way into improving modern cars.

We've got an example we'll show you in the development of
this topic that can be found in this weekends Can-Am cars
from 1966, that was just incorporated into the brand new
2014 Chevrolet Corvette!

That's a span of 48 years!!!

In the mean-time, let's get started with the feature cars of the
weekend, the outrageously fast and powerful cars from the
SCCA Can-Am series....

1965 Lotus Elan 26R
Just another Lotus Elan? It turns out that this 26R version of the Elan
is one of only 97 constructed. Modified Elans had already been extensively
and successfully raced by Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart and others who
proved that in 1963-64, a 1485 Lbs. Short Wheelbase car with a 1558 CC.,
115 Horsepower Twin-Cam engine, 4 wheel disc breaks, a top speed of
120 MPH., and a zero to 60 time of 7 seconds, could easily dominate over
many bigger, heavier, and more powerful race cars of the day.Collin Chapman
and Lotus responded by manufacturing this 26R version and if you ever
wondered what the inspiration for the Mazda Miata might have been, look here.
Auction Sale history for these rare versions span up to $300,000. USD.
