Trail # 65, Banzai North Side

Post by T360 »

.

Banzai originates at the summit just to the right
of the Duncan Quad chair, as you look at this Trail Map.
It has 2 sections, top and bottom,
separated by a Cat Track that cuts across
from Lowell Thomas to Duncan at about the
half-way mark in its vertical.

In this Trail Map sample, the Duncan Quad Chair is the red
line rising to the summit on the left side of the page. It is labelled
on the bottom of the full page, but we're showing a zoomed in
portion of the upper North side for better detail.

When you unload from the Duncan Quad Chair Summit,
turn hard right and you will see Banzai. If you are coming
from the Grand Manitou Summit Lodge or anywhere from the
South side , as you approach the Duncan Off-load zone, the
entrance to Banzai is just left.

Below:
This is a Looking Down Over Banzai’s Summit Sector, Top Half, and it overlooks
the top portion visible(the bottom run-out pitch is not visible from this vantage point),
of what we refer to as Banzai, Bas, Lower, which is accessed by the lateral Cat-Track
that runs from Mid-Lowell Thomas, to Mid-Upper-Duncan. Banzai Bas has it’s own,
unique and very distinct character(**) which is vastly different from the top.

We are adding a second, slightly lower on the trail, and wider angle,
notated for "Sector Navigation FYI Aid”, version immediately below:

of the top, summit originated pitch of Banzai.

Looking down the bottom half, top portion,
just below the half-way cat track.

(**) Banzai Bas, Lower, is separate and distinct in character from Banzai Haut, Upper,
in that Banzai Bas starts out wider, flatter,i.e., far less pitch, and much more
mogul resistant user-friendly. As Notated in above pic/file, when
combined with the right hand(Descending) turn, to the run-out
of Marie-Claude Asselin, which is wider and easier than the Banzai
Run-out, this descent path can be handled by a confident Intermediate
WHEN GROOMED, and the Trail-side views are “Post-Card” Spectacular.

Classic Banzai Powder Day. There are usually between 5 and 10
really solid powder days on Banzai due to the nature of its narrow
dimensions and surrounding tall trees which often act as "scoops"
to capture and retain snowfall. One of the T360 favourite runs of
all time.

One of the neat things about a Banzai Powder day is that when its
really drifting in, the snow is very well retained on the surface due to
the shelter provided by the tall trees on its narrow width. The pic above
and below were taken within about 30 minutes and clearly show a rapid
"fill rate”.

Many Moons ago, Banzai was left un-groomed for the most part,
but within the first decade of the 21st. century, it has more frequently
been included on the grooming list and we are very happy to see that.

Establishing a groomed, well compacted base on this run has given
it a more user friendly accessibility across Skill Levels that may
include confident Intermediates when the conditions are ideal.

Within the context of equipment that is available up to 2013...

Banzai in this condition(as shown below), is one of the reasons
we think a short 11meter radius, soft flex, recreational Slalom Ski,
is arguably the best choice for exploring Tremblant because you can
Carve turns in narrow dimensions when everyone else has to skid
or side-slip old school "Parallel Turns" on their typical 14-18 meter
turning radius all purpose skis.

We have written in our daily conditions reports that Banzai is an
indicator of the stability of the Upper North Side Sector as it
does not receive any blown snow so if it is in good condition
with natural snow only, everything else in close proximity
will be very high quality.
