3/1/12 Tremblant Conditions

Apres Ski Posted Below as Reply....
--------------------------------------------------------------

T360 Preliminary Apres Ski @ 9:59 P.M. ...

There's no need to sugar coat the reality of today...
Despite wind and reduced trail count, it was fine skiing
and boarding, very fine.

Windy on the South, to be sure, but knowing South Lifts were closed,
we drove to the North and proceeded to have a day that not only
met our expectations, but in some ways, surprised pleasantly.
This surprise was not necessarily all the deep snow we may have
wanted. There certainly was a lot of snow flying around, a good storm,
but not a blizzard.

The surprise was perhaps "surprises" as in two main points.
Number 1 might be how little wind there was below the Summit
in many sectors of the North.

Number two might be the "User Friendly" nature of the snow surfaces.
Traction, "plus", Shred Factor, "Plus", all in all, from our standpoint as
experienced Tremblant fans, very very fine indeed considering all the
vigorous activity of Mother Nature.

Going through all the pic's, it was a challenge to find a single
"summary", but then this one jumped out... it sort of captures the
essence of the day we think most people shared. An extremely easy
winter day, a bit cool in the Summit wind, but satin like snow
with grip, traction and forgiveness. Plain and simply, a lot of fun!

More later in an expanded Pic. Based Apres Ski, following around
midnight if we can get through all the sorting.

Wow... that was a major understatement...

At the time, we had a relatively minor breeze that was
just beginning to show the signs of it's eventual aggressiveness.

Now, the wind is so strong that most of the South is Closed and
Flying Mile, the Gondola and Soleil are off-line at least temporarily
due to gale force winds that have rendered them unsafe.

There are no options on that... this wind is HOWLING.

There is no doubt we got snow. There is no doubt the primary
benefit will be on the North from approximately 75 meters
below the Summit to somewhere about the half-way mark, but
there is no way to tell exactly without being there because the strength
of the wind is such that the "Blowing and Drifting Factors" are
unpredictable on a macro level.

Before we wrote the "Lull Before the Storm" Apres Ski bit, we
had written in the main portion of yesterday's daily report:

"The key to all the blessings, benefits and
enjoyment of whatever Mother Nature delivers
is "Adaptable Capability", including,
Equipment/Garment Systems,
Technique/Skill Sets, and
Mental Attitude,
so be prepared for anything."

That means now.

Apart from being right about something, in general terms anyway....

The most valuable part of today's report is obviously going to be
Apres Ski. We're driving to the North shortly and we hope to have
a significant contribution to content later on, but this is a game
changer with as yet, unclear, and not necessarily negative, outcomes.

We can tell you with 99% certainty then,
that even though they may be small and localized,
the "Blowing and Drifting Factors" will have created
some the sweetest Skiing at Tremblant we've seen
this season.

We'll try to find those and bring ya'da'pic's later on...
Lord Willing, and the Creek don't get Snowed in......

It will in no way effect the the total 95 Trail Inventory, in our opinion.
This loss of open trails today is only about wind load safety and
as such, is temporary. We will recover most, if not all, as soon
as the wind subsides and Mountain Crews can sort through things
to restore order.

they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived index pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

( If You "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate, current to

T360 Apres Ski...

Please Note:
Tremblant.ca has declared on their Preliminary Snow
Report for tomorrow morning, that weather permitting,
95 of 95, 100% of Trails will be Open at Tremblant.

Sorry it's so late... unfortunately "hobby" time not readily available,
and as usual, pic file processing and uploading seems to take forever.

Anyway, as stated above in our Preliminary at the top of this
topic, it was a very snowy, very fine day.

This Pic. below captures a lot about the surfaces, fast and forgiving with a very
generous portion of soft, smooth and grip. Beginners may have found a small
degree of "Thick" but that can not be helped when the snow comes falling this fast.

Fuddle Duddle, after lunch. These surfaces were typical North Side.

Even Duncan on its first pitch below the Summit, which usually has a bit
of a tendency to be icy in the centre, had a high degree of grip as you
can see here.

Up at the Summit proper, the wind was genuinely howling at times.
There was a visible "Boundary Layer" right at the surface that was
carrying a fair amount of snow with it.

In the mean-time, at the North Base, there was very little wind,
almost calm with snow drifting lazily down and around. There was
not much traffic either, so for the most part, it was ski right on,
ride right up.

It was a fabulous day for learning and lessons like this one on Expo
could be seen all over, in conditions very easy to navigate.

The main reason for the ease of navigation is the quite dry nature of
the snow, which for the most part was like nice soft cotton baton,
even though it was wind driven onto things/places as this example shows.

More on this story in the morning, but for now, the bottom line is
