Sides Of Tremblant...
Not much you can say when Mother Nature turns
the Micro Wave up to "Max."
Yesterdays high forecast of +16 C, which was already "crazy"
hot for Mid-March, was ultimately blown away as temps zoomed
up to +23 C, or 73 degrees F. We'd be happy with 73 F today if we
were visiting the family in Fort Lauderdale!
This "Blip" in the temps, caused by an unusual anomaly in the
Atmospheric "Jet Stream" is making News/Weather Broadcast Headlines
throughout North America as the East gets Baked and Arizona
gets a Blizzard with up to 90 CM of Snow!
After doing some homework on the Jet Stream, this is the
most "viewer friendly" graphic we were able to find. The colour
differentiation indicates wind velocities within the stream
as noted, but the important point is the unusual shape which
is literally dragging hot air up all the way from just above the
equator.
Could you please flip that around Mother Nature?[/b]
As far as Eastern North American Ski Resorts go, this is not
ideal. The extended duration of this Jet Stream shape for the
next 5 days or so, is not ideal either. If Tremblant has an advantage
in any of this it would be it's more Northern Latitude that may
get slightly less heat than more Southern areas, and when the
Stream starts to return to a more normal linear West to East
pattern, Tremblant will be the first to fall back under the cooler
air masses that could still bring late season snow. The records
will show that Tremblant has received single snow events in April
of over 30 CM's, or a foot of Snow.
For now though, obviously, "Snow" and "+23 C" do not go in the same
sentence for too long, so while there is still quite a bit of deep frost in
the Mountain, as the solar energy works from above, it's inevitable that
we would be seeing the reduction of Open trails at some point.
To a degree, there may be "Preservation" in the strategy, so it's possible
that we'd be seeing some trails come back on line for the busier weekends.
That kind of break in terms of "wear and tear" for trails that are getting thin
may also allow Mountain Crews to do some repair or re-constructive work
between now and then.
It May Look "Green" in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston
or Syracuse, but you can still do this at Tremblant!
Beautifully carve-able surfaces on McCulloch are going
to have the best performance in the mornings.
Scroll Sideways ----->>>> for complete image. For what it's worth, and as Experienced "Spring" Skiers will tell
you, sometimes terrain that's in the shadows will have a higher
Speed factor. This may be due to the surfaces ability to wick
moisture off faster than solar energy can create it, but in any
event, shadowed terrain often just skis faster.
North Side trails that get the long shadows as the sun travels West
can have late afternoon "sweet spots".
Sweet Spot Sample Below...
This is one of our file shots taken about a week ago on P'tit Bonheur
that shows the late afternoon long shadow cast by the Summit.
The sun's energy has actually been dwindling before now, so by this time,
there had already been about 90 minutes of very nice, smooth turning.
Anytime you can find shadowed terrain in these ambient temps, there's a
good chance it may be faster than terrain with direct exposure.

some more snow before the season's end. Until then...
bring your sunscreen...
wax bases for "warm"...
and leave your parka at home!
