24(*) Open Trails on the "Better By The Hour" Slopes
of Tremblant.

Our overall impression of yesterday was Firm, Fast 'n Smooth.

More on that below, but first...

We love this one from yesterday. The wind was very light and snowmaking
was creating its own weather, you can see how it shrouded portions of the
Mountain. Towards the end of the day, some of the guns were shut off and the
Snowcloud gradually moved off. Over the course of several quick training laps
off of Duncan, the flowing cloud looked like a river flowing down the valleys
and between the peaks. Pure Tremblant Mountain Magic.

There was no doubt that yesterday was firm, and there were some icy bits.
But, when the temps go from plus to minus C, that's gunna' happen
and we were surprised by how smooth the base was. There was a bit
of fresh, particularly on leeward trail sides, but the wind that brought it
was very strong, strong enough to push it off the wide open surfaces
in many cases.

What all this meant was that on shallower pitches, you could easily carve
but on the steeper sectors, there was not enough shred depth to hang
onto very tight radius carves, so an "old school" parallel turning technique
was required to maintain control. It was possible to hold very wide radius
carves, but the speed that came with them was not always safe
around traffic or in the tight dimensions of some narrower areas.

Coming up to the Summit over McCulloch shows one of the narrower zones
where parallel turns were required to safely navigate. Snowcloud is also
present here as Mountain Crews were taking advantage of great temps to add
Snow to many areas.

Adapting for the surface firmness was super easy due to the Smoothness
of the surfaces, and because it was just too easy to go parallel for some
braking effect anywhere you needed to, then carry on.

Mountain Crews don't control Mother Natures Heat settings, but they do
control the surface smoothness so we can safely handle the "Firm", and
they did a great job of it... as usual.

We often write about the daily, incremental improvements that
overnight grooming yields and today will definitely have those
advancements, particularly in the carve-able depth of the top
surface layer. That, plus the positive effect of daily Mountain
traffic which helps break things up to an even finer degree, is
why we said "Better By The Hour", above.

Today's Weather...

Definitely early season cool at -15C, but forecasted to rise up as high
as -4C this afternoon. Currently overcast with light snow flurries
and a moderate, potentially gusty, breeze from the South-West,
crossing the Summit from McCulloch towards the Lowell Thomas
Triple Chair. The breezes should diminish as the day goes by.

This pic below is actually from Sunday, but we're putting it in because
it's a fine image that we just liked as we're going through the
700 some odd 24 Hour Weekend pic's...
Anyone that reads this little diary knows we ski Tremblant in
all weather and some of the most remarkable scenery happens
on the grey days.

We did a 6 minute South Side Total Mountain Vertical from the Summit at 3:22
yesterday to catch "Last Run" on the Gondola. Fast, Safe and Fun!
...not to mention a Quad Burning workout!

Click on the "Previous Topic" button, upper Page/Screen right, above to go back
to yesterday for that description... then, scroll down to "Apres Ski" reply.

T360 Apres Ski... @ 10:55 P.M.

You won't need too much more than these pic's,
not if you're a serious Tremblant fan, anyway!

Since opening day, regional race teams have been flocking
to Tremblant and they're still coming in large groups of
all ages. Here are some "Grown-ups"....

North, South, great surfaces everywhere. The iciest bit we found today
was about 50 meters of the steepest Summit Pitch of Duncan. A series of
linked parallel turns to keep speed in check, then back to the fine carving.

More teams, this one above and below, are quite a bit younger than
those above, could be seen on every sector of the Mountain.
They all have great skill and they were all in High Gear! Safe too,
as very light traffic frequently left them all alone in their descent's.
