Our Thermometer reached -35C for about an hour
just before Sunrise. We think that qualifies for “Deep Winter”.

Believe it or not... over 4 decades, we’ve had maybe a half-dozen or so
cooler days than this, so while it is currently the coolest day of the new
year, it is not a record low.

Obviously great care is required to venture out of doors today.
With nothing other than Descent Air Speed, the Facing Wind Chill
Values will be below -40C equivalents, so any attempt to go
out in these conditions warrants very short exposure cycles to
avoid potentially serious consequences. This is the kind of day
that you would consider deferring the Morning Lessons for
Little Johnny and Little Jill.

The best strategy for more than one run at a time is using the
Versant Sud, South Side Enclosed Gondola.

It is important to note that there can be significant differences
between the Very Short Term Hourly Forecast and the Actual
Realities of any factors. Today is one of those days. The Hourly
Forecast for 9:00 A.M. says -29 C, the actual recorded Temp
at 8:58 A.M. is -33C.

The Good News Is The Dramatic Rise In Daytime Temps to -16C
that will continue to rise into tomorrow an on.

Even though it’s at “Last Run”, -16C this afternoon is going to seem Hot
due to the relative context of this morning.

The Other Good News today is Moderate Wind Speeds. Of all the components
of ANY Severe Winter Weather, in our opinion, it is easily the Wind that
sits apart as the single most influential element in the “Comfort”,
“User Friendly” or any other dimension of Human “Utility”.
Properly Dressed... You can stay outside for HOURS in very cold temps
if there is no wind. With the very same Garment System, you may
only manage Minutes in High Winds. Our way of expressing it is...
“The Wind Will Strip The Heat Out Of You Faster Than A Starving Monkey
Can Peel A Banana.”, and it’s true.

The big “Connect The Dots” for Skiers and Boarders however, is that “Wind”
is far too narrow a concept for Winter Alpine Snow Sport preparation due to
one only consideration, Descent Speed. Descent Speed at an easy 25KMPH,
15 MPH, will generate what Aircraft Pilots refer to as “Air Speed”, the speed
of the aircraft through the air when calculated as a “Net Value” considering
“Head Winds” or “Tail Winds”.

Where It Gets Serious For Us...

Skier/Boarder “Air Speed” @ 25KMPH/15MPH through ZERO Ambient Wind
@ -33C, nets a -51C/60 Below Zero F, Wind Chill Value.

What Are The Benefits To This Weather?

Basically, there are two.

1) Clinically Speaking, todays Trail Surface Snow is Excellent
for Skiing. You just have to be geared up to be able to use it.

2) Every Single Moment of these Deep Winter Temp’s puts “Frost”
further into the Core of the Mountain. The Mass of the Mountain
then becomes a stored source of refrigerant when “Warm” of either
“Tomorrow” or “Spring” arrives, and this underlaying source of
refrigerant becomes a stabilizing force for the durability and
quality of the Trail Network Base.

We like to add regional weather context so future Ski Conditions
Researchers do not form the impression that Tremblant is under
singular influence from any weather system. For additional
context please see the previous days in this record for a
chronological sequence.

This may be the New Kkkoolest Day of the Year,
at least to start with, but for those who are very
careful about preparation, the Skiing will be very,
very fine, and temps will rise throughout the day.

The 24hr outlook is that it will be over 30 degrees
C Warmer tomorrow!!! WOW.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
