------------ T360 Apres Ski Season Apres Ski, Under Progressive Construction @ 9:17 P.M. -------------

The Weather Factors For Today Did Not Look Promising,

and indeed, there were a few “challenges”(#),

However....

Whatever Ends Up Looking Like This Looks Good to Us!

(#) A few challenges... No doubt, the combination of last
mid-nights rain, together with the 19C drop in temps at the
Summit from +16C yesterday, to -3C by sunrise this morning
certainly caused a loss of safely openable terrain over Mountain
elevations on this final day of the season, but... what was open
was super-smooth and eventually, like by just before noon hour,
quite a bit had developed from solidly froze to soft, skiable, albeit
somewhat thin, top layers. All you had to do to get great turning
performance was to apply edges gradually and smoothly so you
would not overpower the available grip. As the day warmed up
and the sun came out, more aggressive edge hold capability
was increasing by the run.

One of the collateral effects of the odd weather byproducts
was very low attendance. The bottom line on that was that
if the weather did put you off attending, that was an
understandable, but in our opinion, unfortunate mistake.
Even though the terrain was quite limited, and to only groomed,
it nevertheless turned out to be a rewarding “technical” day
that had excellent workout value, especially considering we
don’t get to ski again for 7 months.

For sure, on the surface, literally, solid groomed is not
everyones cup of tea, and we can completely see why
for some it would not be ideal, but the hand of Mother
Nature holds all the cards and Mountain Crews did a
fabulous job of rendering smooth which makes anything
else 100 times easier to deal with.

With a “Lets Make The Best Of It...” positive mental attitude, really
sharp edges on the old Atomic Race SL’s, plus the widespread
eventual softening, we ended up having a wonderful time, and
a quad burning aerobic lapping day. The vast majority of open
coverage was still winter wall-to-wall and with the easy ability
to engage full-tilt carving on virtually empty slopes, it was a
very satisfying way to end up the season.

If you considered the day on nothing other than it’s iconic
Tremblant scenic magnificence, it was awesomely spectacular
with all manner of big sky winter weather drama, rather like
a flashback to mid-March.

More to follow as time permits...

The Yin/Yang Of The Seasons End...

However... for today, Sunday, specifically, a bit of an odd turn-around
because after yesterday when the Summit got up to +16C, this
morning the Summit is at -3C and it’s SNOWING!

So...

The Laws Of Physics Apply.

Weather Notes:

It’s a mid-March day... on April 19 !!!

Comparing various on-line weather data sources,
as well as our own analogue outdoor thermometers,
we’ve observed as much as 5 to 6 degrees C cooler
at elevations over the Sud/South Resort base level.
That is a spread that is larger than the typical 4C,
and it could be a possible reason for more a more
dramatic freeze-up over the trail network than might
have been expected.

--------------- T360 Closing Weekend Proof Of Snow: -----------------

The Closing Weekend, Versant Nord/North Side
Lowell Thomas, Final Proof Of Snow.

The tree debris you see above is the whole seasons worth of
windy cold winter weather shedding and as the top layers of
snow melt, the organic composition of bark, needles, leaves,
mosses, lichens, etc., etc., do not melt and get left left as a
very shallow accumulation that will become forest floor compost
for new spring plant life. It is all soft, clean and can not be felt
underfoot. We cleared off a bit of the surrounding surface to
illustrate just how shallow the debris layer is and as you can
see, the snow below is pristine all white winter that still has
a HUGE frost supported snowpack below. The ski poles are
148 cm’s, so there’s 4.5 feet of snow under the skis in this shot.

At +16C the top layers are getting soft, thick and a wee bit
heavy, but still a ton of fun to play in!

Of Course... It’s not like this everywhere, but the fact that
it exists anywhere, let alone an entire upper Mountain sector,
is a fantastic tribute to an exceptional level of end-of-season
natural snowpack retention and available, open, Sous Bois
closing weekend quality.

----------------------------

Conditions Notes:

Generally:

Due to massive drop in temps from +16C to -3C
over Mountain elevations, together with overnight
rain along the way... obviously huge re-froze
potential complications.

Many, many wild cards as temps could, maybe,
possibly, might, theoretically, get up enough to
soften... later, maybe a lot later.

You’ll need to be ready for anything/everything!

Sharp Edges Your Best Friends!!!

In the meantime, consult with Summit Info.Ski Crews.

Wooo Hooo!!! Welcome Back For A Final Taste Of Winter!

One thing for sure... it gunna be FAST!

Please Note:

With the almost endless possible variables, the high
value focus needs to be on the Apres Ski reporting,
so please check back as we try to get in enough field
work to comprehensively document conditions as
they are, following later on.

Please Note:
There is an error in the temp recording for this
trail status update. It is not -18C. In the adjacent
Old Village of Mt. Tremblant, at an elevation
equivalent to the Versant Sud/South Side Flying
Mile peak, it is Zero C/32F.
