11/25/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski, under construction at 10:30P.M.

It’s difficult to know how to explain the best characteristics of
a day that most would write off just because it does not seem
appealing on the surface... that’s where our commitment to Ski
any weather frequently highlights undiscovered gems like today...

Here’s what we had to put up with all day At #Tremblant....

We chose this one because it’s symbolic of the majority of our day,
a seemingly endless ribbon of Corduroy that could still be found at Last Run.

If you can imagine Skiing/Boarding in this environment for any day, then you can
imagine it for today.

We spent the day on the North, making up serious uninterrupted Lapping vertical
and at the rate of about 9,000 Vertical Feet per hour off of the Duncan Quad and
there were no, zero, nada, none, not even one, disappointments.

The odd little twig, the very odd little pebble, maybe, but for goodness sake...
It’s November!!!, and the surfaces are astoundingly trouble free.

A fabulous “Private Club” day on the Super Smooth, Very Very Fast,
Best November Opening in Tremblant History.

Anyone who was worried about loss of good Terrain over the last couple
of warm days, had their concerns tossed away by the reality of very
complete Top-to-Bottom wide, immaculate boulevard cruising.

Fast as a Greased Weasel, but because of the firmness, requiring subtle edging.
But, when those edges were committed, a surprising amount of lateral grip.

Here’s a slightly soft focus shot on Rigodon as it curves around to end up
at the Lowell Thomas Base. Edge set being demonstrated here was typical
of all the Open Terrain.

Here’s another Lowell Thomas @ Rigodon sample, this time with the Snow
in the picture that was in the air all afternoon to one degree or another.

All the rain and warm have done is take the Snow out of the Trees and Bush,
the Trails are in great shape, as mentioned, a bit Solid with the drop in temps,
but non-the-less, very well groomed, big, wide and Snow White.

P’tit Bonheur was perhaps the fastest it’s been for it’s whole length, in several
Seasons.

For anyone with poorly, badly, or out of tune Skis/Board, it would have
seemed icy. The firmness would have been a lot easier for beginners than
super soft, but braking and edge control were vitally important for speed
regulation as gravity and almost no resistance had you moving rapidly
otherwise.

Experts were dancing all over the Open Terrain with carefree ease
and wicked fast speed.

It started Snowing on the North Just after noon and the flurries continued on
all afternoon. By last run, P’tit Bonheur had a very sweet carpet-like feel to it.

Wednesday Starts Out Sunny, forecast to cloud over. Temps at -2, to -5C on
the Mountain all day, with light Northerly winds.

With the incremental overnight grooming improvement,
it has every promise of being even better than today!

13(*) Open Trails on Summit To Base, South and North Sides of #Tremblant.

Yesterday’s Wild Windy and unfortunately Warm Weather has left it’s mark
on the “Look"(**) of the Mountain.

Our Hypothesis is that the “Function”(**) has not been changed so much.

...meaning of course, that there’s still Loads ’n Loads of Great Ski/Board Conditions.

Yesterday:

The roaring sound of the wind could be heard from far off and amazingly,
much of the ferocity was in the winds aloft at levels above the TGV Base.

In this shot below you can virtually see the line, represented by the lower
Cloud level. Above that line, the cloud was moving from right to left over
the Mountain at very high apparent speed. Below that line, there was still
significant air movement, but look at the lake surface... almost flat, and
certainly not more than a small fraction of the turbulence that was going on
over the Summit.

We are attributing the combination of Velocity and Turbulence for the closure
of the Gondola in the afternoon, and unfortunately for those who may have
only had the afternoon to get out, a change in plans.

But Wait, There’s more!

As if that was not Bizarre enough, there were Pokes of Blue Sky flashing
sunlit “Special Effects”, as if to add more drama to an already Awesome
Display.

Below:

The final shot in this sequence shows the ongoing pattern of Above/Below
radical difference where the “Line” of visibly most active Cloud continued
to shroud the Summit.

Awesome, Awesome Mother Nature, and while She prevented us from being
up there in the midst of all that action, the fact that we were able to get these
pic’s is the Silver Lining in the Cloud for our day.

Page under construct, but worry not Dear Tremblant Fans... the biggest clue
to stability of the Open Alpine Snow Sport Terrain is the Official Open Trail
Count which stands at 13(*), virtually the same as Opening Day.

We think the Open Snow Surfaces will be in much better condition than
the storm might lead you to believe.

(**)This is why we were careful to differentiate two separate and distinct
concepts and say the “Look” of the Mountain, as opposed to the “Function"
of the Open Terrain, where there is much less loss due to Packing and
Grooming cycles that have generated much greater resilience to the effects
of the storm.

We think, and hope to confirm shortly by Skiing it, that the Open Terrain has
been thick/compressed/cold enough to shed off much of the thermal forces of
water and wind and the best tentative support for that is the Official Open Trail
Count at 13(*).

While Opening Day itself was "Post Card Winter Ideal”,
statistically speaking, the third week in November is not
typically when Snow falls and stays for the whole season,
so welcome back to normal in that regard.

The overwhelming advantage we are still enjoying is the massive
head start on developed Terrain including First Time Ever Summit
To Base, South and North with excellent Ski/Board Conditions for
this very early date, which we believe will be the Mountains biggest
asset both for today, and moving forward.

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
