12/7/14 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Prime Time Evening Apres Ski @ 10:00P.M.

A very interesting day, to be sure. Quite Cool, as in temps, but
under the forecasted brilliant sun that definitely had warming
capability where wind shelter would allow.

TGV On-Line, Just Fine... Thank You Very Much!

By all accounts, the TGV is as good as new, a few little touch-ups left,
but Nice New Control Booth!

Snowmaking is going on at a good pace with more new terrain being
developed. Below is a Telephoto pic taken off the Summit Grand Manitou
Deck looking South-West over Taschereau where there is a huge focus
of Snowmaking. The cool Summit temps seem to help the immediate
conversion of water into snow and one look at this pic pretty much
tells that story...

If you scroll through the post below, you’ll see we said we’d
try to get to 2 alleged Icy Sectors, one on McCulloch, the other
on the Superieur/Jasey.J/Duncan descent path. We did get to both.

Here’s what we found...

There are indeed icy sectors within this amazingly sun drenched scene.
This is where we review “Skill Level” definitions because in several minutes of
observation we saw a series of individuals pass by and the range of skills
was not uniform. There were some who were competent and some that were
reckless. We imagine that some of the reckless group were “Accidentally”
reckless because they were pushed onto this trail by their friends, but
regardless, all the reckless had the same problem, the complete inability to
stop, control speed or direction(other than “down”) and obviously, were
way short of the skills necessary.

Where they exists, the icy bits are undeniable, where the skills do not exist
the trouble is undeniable. Where the icy bits exist and the skills are present,
both Skiers and Boarders make their way down under control. It is this
very evident contrast that leads one to conclude... Some can do it, and do it well,
others are in the wrong place for their skill set and should be on less demanding
terrain.

Guess where most of the “Bad Conditions” stories are coming from?

If you hear “Conditions Complaints”, in the majority of cases they will be from
individuals who for some reason, end up on terrain over their Skill Level, i.e.,
for example... Intermediate Skiers on Expert Rated, Expert Posted Terrain.

Meanwhile, back on the North...

Over on Superieur, the story is the same. There is a very firm base that
has ice underfoot. Observations very much the same too, however there
was an Instructor with a small class and they were working on their “Ice”
technique, and for the most part, doing pretty well with it.
The contrast in this situation is just as dramatic, but here’s where you
actually get to see the benefits of “Learning”. The students were working on
“Control”... and as the “Mad Bombers” whizz past... one hooked edge away from
gravitational chaos... the benefits of learning how to navigate these icy challenges
look incredibly worth-while.

The bottom line is that Skills need to be appropriately matched with
Terrain Ratings and it should come as no surprise that the worst
Conditions stories probably come from the worst mismatch between the two.

Sure, there’s some ice around, but the people who know how to
Ski or Board on it competently, understand the Early Season
Up’s ’n Down’s and are the least likely to whine about it.

It’s going to be another cool night tonight, but when the temps start
to rise in the morning, they will keep on going up for the week, so it
should be very much more User Friendly at least on the temp/comfort scale.

16(*)(**) Open Trails on the Publicly Accessible South and North Sides of #Tremblant.

(**)Please Note: Typically, once the 24Hr. Event ends at Noon, Course Workers
dismantle the restrictive boundary Fences/Ropes/Barriers etc., and the 6 additional
Trails may become publicly accessible. The timing or quickness of any of that is not certain,
however previous observation/experience shows that it’s often by 1:30 P.M.

The Race against the Clock goes on ’til Noon as participants
in the 24Hour Children’s Charity Fundraiser lap the Course
as quickly as possible...

Motivated by Pledge totals that reached well over the $2,000,000.00 mark
yesterday morning, just before the event itself started, Team Members
enthusiasm has been obvious throughout the Resort Village.

Official Acknowledgement:

14 Years of Efforts and Contributions to the needs of Kids of all types has accumulated

When you add in this years contribution, the tally is likely to come out
at around the $19,000,000.00 mark, and in terms of Community Benefits,
numbers that big speak for themselves.

More on the 24Hr Event later...

Moving on to Current Tremblant Ski/Board Conditions:

There is no doubt that the Fresh New Snow of 3 days ago has made a positive difference.

There is no doubt that there are some Icy bits too, but... lets put that into perspective...

It’s the first week of December and technically speaking it’s still “Fall”, so any
comparisons and/or expectations must be referenced to the same timeframe
of previous seasons. On that account, conditions are generally very fine
for this time of year. That is mostly due to the tireless work of Tremblant
Mountain Crews who had a tremendous head start in mid-November that
we are still benefiting from today, but...

Anytime you have an exposure to Thermal Energy on the “Plus” side as
naturally occurs multiple times in Fall and Spring, there’s a high probability
of “Icy” somewhere in the mix. The relative question, as far as we are concerned
is “How Much?”, and that’s where we continue to be very happy with the
overall Surface Quality Mountain Crews have delivered.

It would be impossible to render out 100% of any Icy bits each and every day,
so you will find some. Yesterday at Last Run, the Ski Patrol was warning
people about the presence of Ice on McCulloch, but the run was still open.
We hope to get there for a reality check with pic’s today.

We Skied mostly on the North and there was the very occasional Icy patch
but far and away, mostly beautiful Full-Tilt Carving Snow of mixed Natural
and Blown Snow with a good Shred Depth for Grip and Control.

We did not get to every run and we received reports that the Superieur to Mid- Jasey J.,
to Duncan Bas(Lower) descent path had Icy sectors, so we hope to get over there
today to scope that out too.

REPEAT: It’s only the First Week In December.... and as fine as it is for the first
week in December, we hear people talking as if they were making comparisons
to Mid-Winter.

----------- Conditions Caveat ---------------

We hammer on about Optimized Experience in terms of Equipment Tune
because figuratively speaking, if you bring a Sling-Shot to a Gunfight, the
outcome is predictable. Similarly, if you bring Dull Edges to Any Ski Area
in Eastern North America in late Fall, chances are you’ll find things to complain
about.

All our remarks about Conditions are referenced with Tuned Gear. You need
the right tool for the job, so there is no other option. Furthermore, what kind
of use would there be for a Ski Report using defective equipment(?)... and Skis
or Board without Good edges are defective by definition.

Speed, Grip, and Control at 100% Consistent can be found in many Sectors
as this example from P’tit Bonheur shows.

No icy bits anywhere around here and there were many Skiers/Boarders of all
Skill levels responsibly sharing the best portions of often empty runs like
this P’tit Bonheur sample, as traffic was fairly light .

Ongoing Snowmaking.

Be sure to review the Snowmaking Icons in the Mountain Data below
as it continues at a good pace. More Open Terrain can not be too far off
when you see scene’s like this one on Mid-Duncan just above the Vanier
intersection.

Todays Weather...

Crisp! Starts out at cool -18C and should rise to about -10C under
a Super-Bright Sunny Sky.

The Breezes have gone down considerably from yesterday and last night,
and are forecasted to stay Low Speed all day from the North moving across the
Summit from La Crete towards Soleil. There will be Solar Energy for
safe, quiet, sheltered Trail-Side breaks. Altogether a fairly easy Winter day
with excellent Vista’s on all sides.

There is a warming trend for the weekdays coming up, and amazingly, not
any of it above ZeroC at South Base Levels, so at cooler Mountain Elevations
Winter should survive nicely. It’ll be a very beautiful week for the sheer enjoyment
of easy early season conditions. If you can wrangle a day off... do it.
