Just when things looked like a Perfect Winter Powder Day...
The Power supplying the Summit and Nord, North Sectors was lost...
Summit... No Signs Of Power. Duncan did run and carry passengers, roughly between 9:20 and Noon.
Lowell Thomas was not scheduled to be open anyway, so at that point,
the entire North was Off-line. Buses where sent from the South to pick up
those that were stuck on the North Base and only those that were Parked
on the North were allowed to Ski out on that side.
In the Mean-time, the snow continues to pile up all over Tremblant. One of our
favourite indicators of Stable Winter Conditions, Snow In The Trees, is not only
evidence of the accumulations, but is one of the most beautiful winter scenes
imaginable.
If the Power Fails on North... Who could ever feel “Stuck” on the South!
It was a perfect reason to examine McCulloch for “Case Study" Continuity
Purposes. McCulloch had shown itself to be prone to an Icy centre on the
upper pitch, and there still were some Icy Bits, but the Sides of the pitch
had powder lines all the way down and the mid and lower portions were
quite nearly Glitch-Free.
By Last Run, all we could do was to look longingly North on the way by on
La Crete. We feel confident all the Weather Drama has added even more
Snow to the already superb conditions there.
No doubt about todays “Carve This” All-Day Excellent, Super Smooth,
Reliable, Glitch Free, Last Run Award...
Nansen... Carve This...
-26 C overnight... there’s a very good chance of some Cryogenic effect on
the Snow, so by the time it reaches the daytime high of -16 C under Pure Sun,
there should be some very fine Crisp, High Performance Ski/Boarding Conditions.

84(*) open Trails on the even more Snowy than yesterday 4 Sides of #Tremblant.
We Have No Idea When It Will Stop Snowing....
4, 5, 6 Days..... Talk about Incremental! The Snow just keeps on coming!
This is when Grooming takes on a critical role in Beginner/Intermediate
Skill Level Terrain.
“Too Much Snow”... Never, no such thing at a Ski Resort, however, abundant
loose and irregular thickness does present challenges in the form of highly
variable forward resistance as Skis or Board move across surfaces that have
alternating depths created by the tracks of previous traffic.
We had this conversation with a Beginner yesterday on the way up on the Duncan
Quad who was expressing exactly those challenges. We think the key to Beginner
success in this environment is the total commitment to maintaining the “SnowPlow”
or “Pizza”, Pie Slice Shape virtually all the time in order to maintain confidence in the
ability to stop. “Runaway" Fear is a huge inhibitor to confident progress, and that
fear is born of the worry about being able to Stop. Keep your ability to Stop, and
you can control not only forward motion, but confidence too. It takes some muscle,
but thats very healthy exercise and you will make solid progress.
For Experts, Tremblant is a Huge Snow White Winter Playground!
Generally Speaking... The Expert Terrain is in fantastic shape. There are some
normal irregularities created by Traffic/Wind patterns but for Experts, it’s all in a
Snow-Day’s typical conditions and we are trilled to have such an immense
addition to the Natural Snow accumulations on the Mountain. This sequence
of Days of Natural Snowfall is a Very Positive Game Changer here at Tremblant.
Two Weeks ago we were all amazed at how Fine Mountain Crews kept
conditions with Snowmaking and Grooming, but everyone was hoping
for Natural Snow. As of now, not only have those hopes been realized,
but even more-so than perhaps we expected and still continuing on!
So, moving forward we very cheerfully continue to enjoy the Non-Stop
Snowfall, and look forward to the refinement in Packing and Grooming
that Mountain Crews will be trying to keep up with!
Reality Clause:
The combination of Wind Erosion and Traffic Wear patterns created some slick
icy bits yesterday. As a Case Study, McCulloch, which was 90% Excellent yesterday,
had some exposed icy bits in the centre of the upper pitch that could toss you for a loop
if you were trying to execute a turn when encountered.
If you look closely at the lower right of this pic. below, you can see the revealed
Groomer Track Cleat Marks showing through even though they are totally surrounded
by tons of fresh snow.
As Usual, Speed and Safety are Inversely Proportional. Please, Please go
carefully as you evaluate Sector Conditions and Verify Safe Passage BEFORE
you go ripping around.
Over-Confident Experts can have just as serious “Mishaps” as Beginners.
Do not assume anything other than that the unexpected is possible.
Correction:
There is one thing you can definitely assume...
Tremblant is Beautiful.
Tremblant is a Snow White Winter Wonderland.
If you took out the colourful people, you could easily mistake the
Full Colour Photography for Black and White.
Being Surrounded by this Very Intimate Feeling Scenery as you glide silently past
is one of your life’s Natural Wonder Experiences that leaves a very etherial, almost
spirit-ful impression of the sheer beauty that Mother Nature is capable of.
Today’s Weather Notes:
It was supposed to warm up to about -6 C today, but it seems as though
-2C is more likely. Overcast and Snowing... Still, is a very happy circumstance
at a Ski Resort, so we’re thrilled about that.
Westerly Breezes, light to moderate, so all in all a very easy Winter day.
Temps set to plunge back into the Cold-Zone tonight at -25 C.
That could have very positive effects on the Snow, but we will be back
in “Bundle Up” Territory for the next couple of days.
--------- Conditions Caveat -------------
Careful attention to Speed control on initial exploration is a key to safety.
Abundant, Quite Deep in places, and frequently Drifted Fresh Snow can
create uneven levels of Forward Resistance that can affect balance and
stance without warning.
Allow extra space around others and try to recognize patterns of Traffic
and/or Wind wear that can leave exposed firm or icy base patches that
you may anticipate pro-actively.
Observe and respect all hand posted signage and Hazard Markers placed
by the Ski Patrol that may supersede permanent signs.
---------------- End of Caveat -----------------
