3/16/15 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski, Late Night EDIT @ 11:30 P.M.

Started out Sunny, but by shortly after lunch the cloud cover began to
materialize and frankly, we were glad to see that because at slightly
above zero at the South Resort Base, more thermal energy is not what
we need to keep Snow surfaces Snow.

We can appreciate that there will be many who will vocally disagree on the
Overcast Vs. Sunny thing, but all we care about is Snow and Trail Quality,
so please forgive us when it comes to Surface preservation.

Anyway, the warmth at South Base Level was confined to the lower levels and
as soon as you got to higher elevations, Sub-Zero prevailed.

Above: It’s a Wonderful Sight! Snow in the Trees! One of the surest signs of Stable
Sub-Zero Temps is Snow in the Trees because that Snow does not have the benefit
of any insulation or frost underneath to support it. When Warm air circulates around
Tree boughs, it only takes minutes to begin to melt it, so the fact it’s here at the
Summit and almost as far down as the TGV Quad Base, is a very favourable indicator
of Surface Conditions Quality wherever it can be seen.

The Skiing was improved in all the ways we anticipated in terms of both
smoothness and scope of area covered by last nights grooming, so with another
nights work by Mountain Crews, tomorrow should see yet another increase
in compaction, area and performance.

Here’s a sample of the Un-Groomed Expert Terrain, Marie-Claude Asselin, Versant Nord,
the North Side. In this case, the new snow has definitely added to the coverage
and we found moguls that were still quite soft and easy to turn through. There were
a couple of small Icy bits, one of which you can see in the close focus of this pic.
Due to the highly variable nature of Un-groomed expert Terrain, caution must be
used on initial explorations as hazards can be unique to each Un-groomed Trail.

Please Note: Our Apologies for not being able to report on La Griffe and P’tit Bonheur
as we had hoped(see below) to do this eve. We will make very attempt to update those
Trails Status tomorrow.

When all the basic elements of your Tremblant Day are “Winter”...
There’s no doubt your Ski/Board day is going to be Excellent.

There’s just Way Too Much Snow Around Here To Be Anything Else.

Yesterday’s “Thickness” with all the Fresh New Snow, should become Today’s
“Smoothness”, as Mountain Crews begin to catch up with the vastness of the
square area to be re-compacted and Groomed.

Despite 12,000 pound Grooming machines driving over it as soon as it was falling
Saturday Night, the new snow retained much of its lightness in internal structure
and consequently the top layers yesterday were quite soft and it was not long
after First Tracks that the Turning action of Skiers and Boarders began to generate
mogul formations.

What a Workout! From a technical standpoint, the softness was best navigated
with a well centred, compact stance, and for Skiers, feet closer together to create
a platform that could traverse the sometimes irregular, tracked and mogul’d
Trail Surfaces.

Too Much Snow? For some, yes. We say that’s a Happy Problem at a Ski Resort,
and it’s temporary until the Grooming Cycles of every Night Shift after a Big Snow
event can get that all-important compression achieved. For a very large part,
that will be today.

We hope to get to La Griffe today to see how it has changed. The whole Expo Peak
Sector got more than it’s fair share of the new snow, so Mogul Hounds were
having loads of fun, while Front Side Carvers were struggling with the very soft
bumps that need low speeds to safely get through.

One of Yesterdays Most Important Lessons... “Pace Yourself”...
There were a fair number of “Early Retirements” yesterday. Ontario School
March Break Muscles, used to the short descents of “Blue Mountain”, were
all of a sudden being driven way beyond their regular endurance levels and
the lively, enthusiastic, Chair Lift Chit-Chat of the Morning became quiet
and as the afternoon passed, the rides up Duncan for example, were often
silent from Base to Summit. Welcome to a Real Mountain Ontario March Breakers!

We are absolutely certain there will be some very sore Quad Muscles Today!

Fear not though, “Out-of-Shape” Ontario Friends... Todays Increased Trail Smoothness
will give you a chance to re-couperate and re-program those muscles!

Good Grief Charlie Brown!!! Little Moguls On P’tit Bonheur !?!?!?

Very, very unusual, but when there’s this much new snow, it can happen for a day.
You KNOW there’s a lot of soft snow around when moguls start to form on upper
P’tit Bonheur and we’d have to say that might only be a couple or three days
a Season.

We’d also be willing to bet money that Today, this Trail of Benchmark Excellence will
be 99% Flawless. We’ll get back to you on that...

Weather Notes:

Mostly Sunny with daytime high at +3 C and moderate South Winds
crossing the Summit from the Soleil Sector.

Gradual overcast building later in the afternoon and Snow Flurries this eve.

Minus 4 C overnight and temps dropping tomorrow as a front arrives.

One of the most positive aspects of the Daily Grooming Cycle
Refinements going on now, is that somehow, with the temps
on the Mountain staying just below freezing over the recent
Weather, there is very little ice in the mix, so the remarkably
stable Base has come through to Today in Excellent form.

We think this Fundamental Component of the Tremblant Groomed Trail
Network is the primary reason for both Quick Integration of the
Fresh New Snow, as well as the continued Excellent Surface Quality
we expect to see for the rest of the Season.

they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
