Conditions 3/26/09
Posted: Thu Mar 26, 2009 8:26 am
.
Foggy, Warm, Spring Conditions.
The skiing will actually be great (see Ace of "Diamonds" below).
54 selected trails open and the Mountain is in "Preserve and Protect”
mode, so the open trail count is subject to revision by the minute
today to allow for safety and maintenance.
And Yes, as hard as it may seem to believe, there is going to
be great skiing on the Mountain today.
It may take a bit of exploring to find it, but it is there.
We have spoken before about the "Ace of Diamonds"...
That's when the moisture content in the spring corn snow increases
resistance to forward motion, and that means you can try steeper runs
(ie. the "Diamond" runs) with more control that you normally can.
Provided that you use gradual, deliberately applied edge control,
this soft spring corn snow is also very forgiving, in the sense that
you are less likely to catch edges, due to the yielding nature of the
malleable soft snow.
You still have to use a lot of care and control though, because if you
make big errors in edge control, you can end up quickly digging into
the soft surface too far to recover and you can end up head over heels
before you know it.
Bottom line on this point... GO SLOWLY as you explore. Find the good
terrain and do at least a couple of laps to find the best line.
I have had some of the best ski days ever in these kinds of conditions,
but it takes patience, care and a Positive Mental Attitude to do it.
Preperations for the Big SPIN event are ongoing, Check out this
