4/2/16 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski Mid-Evening Edit @ 9:15 P.M.

Today was one of the most unusual days we’ve had at Tremblant in a long time.

It started out overcast but clear, and the original Weather Forecast was for “Light Rain”.

With regard to the possibility of “Light Rain”, earlier this morning we wrote:

"That softening may be accelerated by the possibility of light rain, but we’re hoping
for a repeat of yesterday when forecasted light rain Did NOT Show Up... not
even a single drop fell.

Maybe if there is precipitation, it will come as snow on Cooler Mountain Elevations???”

These South/North Pic's should answer any questions you have
on that score...

Whether you think we got that right, or that it was just wishful thinking that came true,
The Snow Fell, and Fell Hard on and off, for the whole afternoon.

That’s when things became “Unusual”...

For the sake of all the Snow Falling, perhaps just add contrast, Mother Nature
decided to throw some of this in...

We’re Not Sure We’ve Ever Seen Exactly This Same Snow Before. Very Unusual.
As it fell initially, it was thick and heavy. Maybe the Best Snowball Snow you’ve
ever had. It packed to “Ballistic Grade Snowball” instantly and underfoot it looked
as if it was compressed, glossy, polished, and Very Fast.

As you can see in the Pic above, it formed, for lack of better technical terms, a Sheer
Coating over the pre-existing somewhat icy substrates. What we did for this photo
was to Ski this track, stop, remove Skis, walk them back up a few metres, and place
the Skis laterally over the track we just made to illustrate a scale of reference.

For the most part, it stuck to lower layers very well, but there were certain angles
or pressures that generated what you see above, where the top layer would “Sheer”
off from the lower strata.

In terms of Ski Performance, it Skied with great edge set and grip, excellent
turn and braking responsiveness, and for the most part, great speed, but there
were also brief spots of high friction when you felt as if you momentarily had an
anchor dragging. Most Unusual, but all things considered, still Loads Of Fun!

As you can see below, generally there was more than adequate depth for shredding,
however as we alluded to this morning, there were “Icy Bits” on many of the Steeper
pitches and good edging or not, you had to be aware and proactively avoiding the most
obvious slick sections to keep full control. Some of the Icy bits were covered by a
thin coating of Snow Camo, so you had to constantly be focused.

If you scroll back up to the Sunny Sissy Schuss Pic. Above, you’ll see what
attending Tremblant Fans had for the vast majority of the Open Terrain...
Very Sweet, Very Quick, Very Smooth, White Winter Wonderful for all Skill Levels!

What Will Tomorrow Be like? Hard to tell exactly with the plunging temps
back down to -14C tonight. It could be really Icy, it could be really Fine
as a good overnight Cryogenic, Super Cold Temperature Shock has also
been known to “Freeze Dry” all the dampness out of Surfaces.

We’ll just have to wait and see....

2 Big Tremblant News Items:

Tremblant.ca Announces Official Bonus Weekend, April 16th, 17th, 2016.

Over the past several days we’ve been referring to the durability of the Base
and Conditions with the intentional reference that they could “Easily” last until the
“Officially Scheduled Seasons Close” (or words to that effect),on April 10th.
Very unofficially, there’s just so much Snow around here, we thought there might
be the possibility of such an extension. Of course it’s very unwise to speculate on
any seasons extension, there are many co-factors involved such as Human Resources
and Long Term Weather Forecast Models that we are not privy to, but... from only the
standpoint of “Enough Snow”, there was never any question in our minds that from
that most essential, basic of prerequisites, “Enough Snow” would not be a problem
for an extension this season.

Regional Tremblant Fans that have the ability to attend should be making all the
scheduling adjustments they need to organize for the bonus weekend now!

We’ve already been asked “How much do you think will be Open?”, but we
must respectfully decline to guess at this early stage. Other than the fact
that Tremblant.ca has indicated only Terrain on Versant Sud, South, and
Versant Nord, North will be available, there are just way too many “Wild Cards”
looking 14 days ahead right now.

Given that Mother Nature can behave completely unpredictably, it might even
be fair to say “Weather Permitting”(**), but so far this season, when it comes to
Weather and its effects on the Alpine Trail Network, Tremblant has come out
way ahead in the balance of positive Conditions and Natural Snow Accumulations.

(**) In Tremblant.ca’s Blog announcement of the Bonus Weekend they do state
“Weather Permitting”, however those words are a bracketed attachment behind the
reference to the availability of Summit Grand Manitou Lodge Outdoor BBQ.
An Archival Copy of the Tremblant.ca Blog is attached below at page bottom for
your reference.

The Bottom Line on the Bonus Weekend is that everyone we’ve spoken to about
it is thrilled for the opportunity. It’s a long time ’til next November and every
single day on the slopes now, is a privilege that dedicated Ski/Board Fans are
most grateful for.

Todays Conditions... After yesterday’s “Warm, Soft” and last nights “Sub-Zero”...
you do not need to be surprised that there may be a substantial “Icy” component
until this afternoons temps peak at around +4 C, allowing for some softening.

That softening may be accelerated by the possibility of light rain, but we’re hoping
for a repeat of yesterday when forecasted light rain Did NOT Show Up... not
even a single drop fell. Maybe if there is precipitation, it will come as snow on
Cooler Mountain Elevations?

---------------- Conditions Caveat -------------------

With The Natural Thaw-Freeze-Thaw-Freeze, 24hr Spring Temp-Range cycles,
Natural Hazards that include but are not limited to: Loose Organic Debris
largely made up of Tree Leave, Needles, Twigs, Sticks, etc., Solar or Wind
Exposed Topographical features such as Crests and/or Steeper pitches
can exhibit icy zones of evolving dimensional extensions that may also
reveal Exposed Rock Substrates. Concentrations of Sharp, Loose Debris
around Exposed Ground are possible at any time.

Pay Strict Attention To Ski Patrol Hand Posted Difficulty and Hazard Ratings.
Pay Strict attention To Permanently Posted Difficulty Ratings.

Use SLOW, Cautious Speed on all Initial Explorations to Verify Safe Passage.

Do Not Assume Conditions Will Be Identical From Run to Run.

You Must Be Prepared To Emergency Stop Within LINE-OF-SIGHT,
Skier-VFR Navigational Rules as set forth in the Mountain User,
Skier/Boarder, Code Of Conduct.

Slow Down and Scan, Scan, Scan, at Trail Intersections

Please Note: This Caveat Warning Is Not Complete. There may be an infinite number
of Potential Combined Hazard Factors, i.e., for only one example, "Too Much Speed as
you Hit an Ice Patch in Front of a Rock” that could lead to any degree of personal
injury of immediate or long-term concern.

Compared to the Total Square Area Of The Open Terrain, The Hazard Zones Are Still
Fairly Small, but if you hit one without the appropriately slow speed required to avoid it,
the Consequences Can Be Severe, to more than just yourself.

Caveat Within the Caveat:

Accidents can/do happen to the very best intentioned Mountain Users,
and Alpine Snow Sports are Gravity Propelled, so all we can do is
try to be as pro-active as Circumstances and the Laws of Physics permit.

-------------- End of Caveat ----------------------
