There’s a Whole Big Bunch of Gorgeous April Tremblant Geographic
Wallpaper Pic's Attached Below in the following “Replies”.

An Amazing, All-White, "Winter-Like" Seasonal Wrap-up!

Please Note(a): Due the extraordinary April Conditions we are “Post-Season” adding
several replies with a more-or-less reverse chronological highlight retrospective.
Some pic’s may be out of time order, but as usual, Pic.file.Data is always
attached on the bottom of every image we include, starting with mo./day/yr. coded date.

Please Note(b): Research Grade Pic.Files can be large and may take
time to load, depending on length of post. For Best Detailed Viewing Results
Go Big Screen, up to Smart T.V., if possible. Page Loading Speeds improve with
Topic Scrolling. There may be default mod’s to highlight functional Snow Surface

Preliminary Open Trail Data For April 16/17, 2016, Posted Here 4/15/16 @ 9:16 P.M.

Bonus Open Weekend, April 16/17, 2016.

For Those Lucky Enough To Be Able To Attend:

Please Forgive Our Enthusiasm, but...

The Main Reasons The Bonus Weekend Will Be So Very Fine...

Let’s Say You Want To Be The Very Best At What You Do...

First You Need “Raw Material”, i.e., “Snow"...

Raw Material:
This Versant Nord, North Side Depth Sample above from last weekend
shows over a Metre Of Trail-Side Bush Snowpack on April 10th.

The Ski Pole you see above, pushed directly into this Upper P’tit Bonheur Trail-Side
Pic. is 122 cm’s/48 inches. It's a Great Sign of the abundance of Natural Snow
at Tremblant necessary to support the Bonus Weekend!

Then, You Need A “Finished Product”...

Mountain Grooming Crews were anxiously waiting to get onto the Trails,
Apres Ski last Saturday and they could be seen circulating through the night
working in all the new snow that fell on Friday, April 8th. Much of that work
will still be evident this weekend.

So then, between the “Raw Material” and the Skills and Abilities to produce
a “Finished Product”, that’s how you get to be...

Number 1 In Eastern Canada, “Grooming”, Ski Magazine Reader Survey, Fall 2015.

And... that extends to the Last Run of The Last Day of Every Season.

The Mountain Operations Group at Tremblant has both the Tools and Decades of Experience
for Optimizing Open Trail Conditions. 77 Years of Regional and Global Recognition for
Consistently High Quality have made Tremblant’s Winter Alpine Snow Sports Trail Network
a Benchmark of Technical Merit for any date within the Open Season, and owing to
to the depth of the aforementioned “Raw Material”, this Bonus Weekend is going to
be a Great Example of just how well Ski Season can wrap up.

And Then People Around The Region, And Indeed, Around The World...

Will Recognize That You Are One Of The Very Best Signs Of Skiing Excellence!

Please Forgive Our Enthusiasm(b)... It mostly comes from comparing todays
extraordinary late season conditions to all those years and decades ago when
we were overjoyed to have even a few strips of snow so late, and the seasonal
foundations of Snowmaking just did not exist to “Last Run” in the beneficial way
we have now.

Important Weather Observations from the last Open Day, April 10th.

The Signs Of Spring Are Just Beginning in the Reflections of Lac Tremblant
as the Winter Ice begins to recede. This scene from last Sunday, Apres Ski,
shows the remarkable presence of the “Snow in the Trees Frost Line”, mid-way
between the TGV Quad Base and the Summit. This white line across the Mountain
is one of the best possible indicators that “Winter” has made it through to the very
end of a most surprising, positive, seasonal finish.

April 16/17 Conditions Notes:

Overnight Low Temps at South Resort Base Level at around Zero C should
normally produce about 4 Degrees C Cooler temps at Mountain Elevations
so that would suggest initial Icy bits until the Solar Energy quickly begins to
soften Snow surfaces, however, there is still a great deal of underlaying frost
in the Trail Base, so that will help to a certain extent. That Frost may act as a
barrier to the depth of the Sun’s ability to get too far into the surfaces and what
we'd hope for is that there will be a 3 hour sweet spot, say between 10:00 A.M.
and 1:00 P.M. where the performance should be Fast, Forgiving, and Tremendous
Carving/Riding Fun, before Mother Nature’s Microwave really begins to cook.

For that reason, we recommend that Skiers/Boarders have a late Lunch in order
to take advantage of the very best that these(and any truly Warm/Hot “Spring”)
days should offer.

Naturally, any Base Coatings, i.e., “Warm” range Wax or Hydrophobic, water repellant
treatments, will extend your performance opportunities farther.

Ski/Board in the Shade! For an extra margin of performance, any surfaces such as
tree or land contour shaded areas not directly exposed to Sun will hold crisper
and faster surfaces for anywhere between a few hours or the whole day, at least
in a relative sense, so if you find things a wee bit “Sticky” or “Slow” out in the Sun,
try the shady sides(particularly on the North), for better glide.

Otherwise, as the daytime high temps are definitely getting up to the high teens “C”
and towards the mid-Fifties “F”, you can expect full-on Super-Soft Spring Corn Snow
that may turn mushy by mid afternoon.

Compared to Average April 16/17’s, there’s just way too much snow on the ground to
anticipate much in the way of hazards, however, they can and do exist, so after a
week of trails being closed, it’s really important to seriously pay attention to ANY
hand posted Conditions Warnings or advisories placed by the Ski Patrol for the Bonus
Weekend.

This is the second Extraordinary April in a row.(**) As we have mentioned in a recent post,
last April was unusually fine, but for different reasons. In that case, it was the
sustained 71 some-odd days of Sub-Zero’s that carried excellent conditions forward
to April as there were no thaws. This year, as the records show, we’ve had all the
normal “January(etc.) Thaws”, but with the end of February, beginning of March, 18 day
stretch of Blizzards and Snow Storms that generated over 2 Metres of Natural Snowfall,
plus all the ongoing up to April 8/9 that brought the seasonal accumulation up to
509 cm's, it’s just outright TON’S of Snow!

((**)If you do an End-of-Season Archive review for previous years here, you will
actually find Tremblant has enjoyed a string of 4 consecutive seasons of very fine
late season conditions. Anecdotally/unscientifically speaking, based on decades of
experience, all 4 have been above average, but this one(2016), and the previous
one(2015), were not only above average, they are what we would consider to be
extraordinary for the reasons outlined above. We have a wild personal theory that
these snowy conditions could become the new trending normal if Global Warming is
bringing Tremblant’s slightly cooler historic averages up more frequently into Mother
Natures own, best, natural snowmaking temp’s.)

Way Back on December 23rd, 2015 We Wrote:

"For Upcoming Tremblant Trip Planners:
It should also be noted that this transitional Fall/Winter pattern is not necessarily
indicative of how the rest of the season will be either. For example, a slightly warmer
than average January would actually put Tremblant in a More Favourable Natural
Snow position because it would bring us up a wee bit closer to Mother Natures own
best Snow making temps., so there is some probability we could see more than
average Snowfall as a consequence.”

We Think The Evidence Speaks For Itself.

Re: 4/16.17/16 #Tremblant Bonus Weekend Conditions

Post by T360 »

Post-Season, Archival Additions, April 2016 Ski/Board Conditions.

The obvious excellence for Mid-April was only possible due to the pre-existing week(s),
and for April, it was so "Winter" beautiful we just had to add for the sake of the
spectacular scenery!

(Pic.Locational data is always attached to each Pic.File as Title Information
on the bottom of each photo.)

The important aspects of this first POV are the very obvious amounts of
Snow in the Trees and Retained Snow in the Bush. Typically, by April 10th,
there would be no snow in the trees and considerably less retained snow visible
in the bush, with a far larger “Brown” component, indicating the receding levels
of trail-side snow melting off to reveal the ground beneath.

Of those two characteristics, the one we really like is the Snow in the Trees which
highlights the freshness of the most recent Natural Snowfall that has not been
exposed to any “Plus” value, above freezing heat. This speaks very emphatically
about the Winter-Like Alpine Ski/Board Trail Surfaces Quality that can be found
within this pic. “Snow in the Trees” does not have any insulation, so when it is
exposed to 360 degrees of ambient surrounding air, and “Plus” temps, it will melt
off within hours or even minutes, so it’s presence instantly tells the observer
that Surface Conditions are correspondingly unaffected by heat.

Another example of photo's that could be just as easily labeled “January 10th”,
"February 10th", or “March 10th”, without any question what-so-ever.

Below:
This is a three shot sequence at the Summit Level Entrance to Versant Sud,
the South Side Nansen. At 6.2 Kilometres in length, Nansen is Tremblant’s
longest Trail. As it was initially cut in 1938 under the design supervision of
“Jackrabbit” Johannsen, it has always been a standard of excellence. As primarily
a “Green” and “Blue” descent, it is immaculately Groomed and enjoyed by all
Skill Levels.

The “Snow in the Trees” that we talk of above(and elsewhere so frequently
in these pages), as a mark of real Winter Conditions is ever-so-evident in all
these Summit Level pic’s.

Below: In the last of this Nansen 3 shot sequence...
The majority of Skiers and Boarders are focused on descent views as
they make their “Runs” down the Mountain, but we’re frequently stopping
to photograph conditions, and in this case, looking back up, hopefully to
capture Action Shots of those Skiing or Boarding past us. Regardless of any
passing traffic though, sometimes the “Big Sky Picture” is just so overwhelmingly
impressive that it is impossible to ignore for it’s own spectacular beauty.
No camera on Earth can really do this scene justice though... and, you will know
exactly what we mean when/if you are lucky enough to see it for yourself.

A ride up the Duncan Quad from the Versant Nord, North Side Base, gets you this
view as you off-load at the Summit. Overlooking Versant Sud, the South Side long
views with the Summit Grand Manitou Lodge in the foreground reminds you that
you are on top of a real Mountain. For those that may not yet have had the privilege
of Skiing/Boarding Tremblant, we also think this is a great logistical advantage because
all the Base-To-Summit lifts end up here, within a 30 metre radius, so it is very
easy to co-ordinate your group for meetings during the Ski/Board day.

topography on this trail is highly under-rated, but Groomed, and with
No Traffic(for safety), this trail comes alive with a wee bit of speed and
the carving performance of it’s surfaces can be breathtakingly excellent.

Overlooking the Summit Level Versant Nord, North Entrances to Beauchemin,
on the right side of this frame, and off towards the left, the path to Andy Moe
and P’tit Bonheur. The almost infinite scope of Snow White Winter evident here
is almost surreal for April 9th.

Above and Below: P’tit Bonheur, Versant Nord, the North Side at Tremblant.

This Trail Is Magic. From First Tracks on Opening Day to Last Run on Closing Day,
we would challenge anyone to find any other trail in the known Ski World to
come anywhere close or more consistent in Groomed Surface Quality than this
remarkably fine run.(**)

From Kitchener-Waterloo Ontario, on March 8th, 2016(and we Quote):
“P’tit Bonheur Is The Best Trail I’ve Ever Skied On.” Period.
(This coming from a person who had much of her early years Ski
experience at Banff. Thanks Glenna!)

Regardless of date, “Perfect As Usual” is how we file tagged these two
P’tit Bonheur Pic’s., because it’s true!

((**) Of course there are days when things like a 40cm Blizzard or
an overnight -20C temp drop across Zero C, can make things everywhere
challenging, but this trail is always the first to recover and it’s gentle,
contours make even those brief challenges comparatively easy to deal with.)

Riding up the Duncan Quad on the “Final Approach” to the Summit...
The View To The Right... Overlooks the Peak of the “Edge” Sector and
Trail # 88 “Action”. You can also see through the trees descending down
from Actions top curve, Trail # 86 “Emotion”, a Glade or Sous-bois run that
takes you back to the Lowell T Base Zone, Via lower P’tit Bonheur.

This one’s actually from the 10th again, but it’s a classic Versant Nord, North POV
that we just can’t leave out.

Driving around to Versant Nord, the North Side, you pass over a bridge just before
you reach the stop sign to turn left into the North Side Base Lift/Parking zone.

We frequently stop at the bridge to capture this picturesque scene. We have
plans one day to show the periodic seasonal advances in a “Time Lapse”
sequence in this location, but today, April 7th, there’s nothing but the wonderment
generated by such a pure winter scene for this date. This left us with no doubt
about including such extraordinary evidence of Mother Natures late season beauty.

This is another version of a “Proof Of Snow” we used April 7th.
Measuring the depth of ambient Trail-Side snowpack is a bit of a challenge
so we regularly use the only tools of a known dimension we have “On Hand”
i.e., Ski Poles @ 122cm’s/48 inches, and/or “On Foot”, i.e., Skis @ 165cm’s,
pushed straight into the snow to effectively illustrate Snow Depth below the surface.

In this case, Ski Poles do the job fairly well for the depth part and the way the
tossed Skis displace the loose Powder Surface gives you a good idea of the
softness in this fresh, all natural, late season snowfall.

The top of the Ski Pole is pushed in about 3 or 4 inches below the surface, so the
snow depth here is over 50 inches/130 cm’s.

They were taken within about 10 minutes of each other. The Skis in both pic’s

of them “Below”.Please Note in the “Above”, the 122cm/48 inch Ski Pole buried
into the snowpack which is the same depth beside, and all around this scene.

The Snow that quickly accumulated to quite a depth on the 7th, actually started
mid-day on the 6th and in the quietness of the afternoon of the 6th, began to rapidly
transform the trails into “Fresh Tracks Snow White Carpet”, for lack of any
better descriptive terms...

We noted in our date-specific posts that the initial light, fluffy, low resistance
later became heavier and a bit sticky on the 7th, due to temp’s and humidity,
however, such is “Spring”!

(Please Note:”Wet Lens Syndrome” Plus Flat, Low Contrast light, made
for very challenging 4.6.16 photography, so images have turned-up, cooked-up,
contrast, highlights, and definition to show Snow Surface Detail as default.)

Anecdotal Surface Quality, Speed and Performance Notes from April 5Th:

April 5th was a day of remarkable performance.

Traction, Lateral Grip, Shred Depth, Carving Edge Set, and many other parameters
of Groomed Surface characteristics, where all at very high levels of Speed for
Experts who could take advantage.

This following demonstration of the April 5th Speed capability may seem
odd to most, but to those Expert “Front Side Carvers”(as “Ski” Magazine defines
them), who have ever tried it, there are very few occasions when it’s possible.
Combinations of friction and gravity typically make this track/path difficult to execute.

What we have here is a complete 360 degree carved turn, i.e., a “Circle”.
The challenge with completing carved circles is enough speed and grip to
get all the way around, as may be offset by gravity and/or friction, and
experience shows that is very difficult to do.

Are you an expert carver? Have you ever tried this? You’ll know exactly
how hard it is to do if you have!

Below:
Another aspect of this gorgeous snow is that it’s performance qualities
carried right through all skill level rated terrain and on the other end
of the Ski Experience spectrum, beginners were finding “Easy” on these
great surfaces that are wonderfully compliant for the most basic turning
and braking control movements.

Above/Below:
We take great care to emphasize the constant availability of Beginner “Green”
rated terrain and this two shot 180 degree spread on Versant Sud, South Side Nansen
is a very fine example. Wall-to-wall seamless coverage over a very gentle 6.2
kilometre trail, allows Beginners to establish learning rhythms that are tremendously
advantageous in quick learning curves. Being able to proceed without distraction
over long, uninterrupted practice runs gets you rapid advancements and excellent
muscle memory/retension in basic skills.
