Well, You Can’t Say It Wasn’t Sunny At Tremblant Today...

But you can say it wasn’t Sunny at Tremblant for more than about 30 seconds at a time.

You could definitely say it was “Breezy”...
(some would say the use of the word “Breezy” would be a considerable understatement,
but we like to be polite...)

Skiing on the Groomed, Open Trails was generally Quite Fine. Good glide, good edging
and fast underfoot. There was enough New Snowfall depth that fell after Grooming,
that there were Powder sections, and by end of day, those became somewhat tracked and
uneven. But... in our experience, there was not much in the way of Mogul formations.
A few Icy or Slick bits on pitches, but with responsible exploration speeds reduced to
allow for the unexpected, it was clear to see the patterns that could be safely
handled with less speed.

As we discuss below in the orig. post, the Un-groomed Terrain is not yet at seasonal
maturity depths, so there are natural hazards of undefined individual size and total area.
We strongly suggest that if you are concerned by Base damage that can result from
rocky debris, you should navigate very slowly, or defer passage until more Base
Accumulates over these un-groomed areas.

Repeat From Above:
Skiing on the Groomed, Open Trails was generally Quite Fine.
Good glide, good edging and fast underfoot.

Very Cold Tonight, but take a peek at this....

If this forecast holds, the Mountain may never see a single degree of “+”
at cooler elevations.

Mother Nature’s providing a big helping hand too, as more snow, another 12cm’s,
falls over her already generous gifts that just keep on adding up. As the Stat’s read,
123cm’s of accumulated Natural Snowfall now, since Season’s Opening.

The value of 123cm’s, over 4 Feet, of Natural Snowfall for any Season’s Opening
can not be overstated. It has very simply given such a huge advantage to early
terrain development, that Conditions could not really be anything other than exceptional
when compared to average historical conditions for this date.

Tremblant Guests Have, Are, and will Continue to benefit from this foundational
advantage. Not only have we enjoyed the very highest possible standards of
prepared Groomed Terrain Openings(**), but that very same fact extends the benefit
forward to virtually all future Tremblant Guests for the entire season now. The Base
is so well established, and in the presence of consistent Sub-Zero temps that are
putting a good, hard frost into the Mountain, that with nothing other than statistical
seasonal average from this point forward, it would still be an Excellent Season.

If this early trend of above average Natural Snow plus consistent Sub-Zero’s continues,
it holds every promise of being a truly exceptional Season.

For all Future Tremblant Trip Planners, we don’t think there could be a more optimistic
outlook. Loads of Snow, Steady, Supporting Temps, and such an Early Start are the
very best elements of expectations for those who are looking at their prospects
for any upcoming Tremblant Ski/Board Holiday Visits for the whole Season.

Moving On To Some Today Specific’s...

MORE SNOW FALLING NOW.

Nice!

Another 12cm’s, around 5 inches and thankfully with this current Texas Low System,
at Tremblant’s Northerly Latitude, it’s going to stay all snow, all day. As close as
Montreal is to the South, it’s currently freezing rain. Farther South at Jay, Vermont,
it’s currently +3C and raining.

We like to point out this advantage by frequently saying “Thank Goodness For North,
As In Latitude”, because very, very frequently, and especially at Season’s beginning
or end when temp’s can regionally be floating at or around Zero C/ 32F, the “Tipping
Points” between Snow or Rain can be very fine, but “North” usually has an advantage
over “South” in latitude for both making and retaining Snow.

Advantage... Tremblant!

In the meantime, the CBC National Weather Broadcast is warning Montreal Drivers
to literally “Stay Home” because of the very dangerous driving conditions in Freezing
Rain.

Not so good if you live in Montreal and want to Ski Tremblant today, however no
amounts of great outdoor activity are worth risking life and limb for, so if you are
reading this somewhere to the South where it is freezing rain, please yield to caution.
It’s a long Season to go, and still plenty of time to get out when there’s not as much
risk on the roads.

New Opening Terrain Development News: Nansen Bas, Lower

We dedicated attention to the Importance of Nansen Bas, Lower, in last night’s
Apres Ski, so it’s very gratifying to see this Opening scheduled for today. It’s
a big day on the Mountain when Nansen Opens Summit-To-Base. Logistically,
it doubles the South Base Descent options and it relieves significant traffic load
off of Johannsen, so South All-Day Surface Quality and User Friendly takes a nice
jump up every Season when Nansen Bas, Lower, comes on-line.

Hopefully, you will be able to go from this:

To This: Today Nansen Bas, Lower is shown as Groomed and “Open” with
a Progressive, or Gradual status attached, so if all goes according to plan,
the Ski Patrol may take down the ropes sometime this morning.

Weather Notes:

Kind of an odd day with temps peaking at around -7C, then dropping at a fair clip
as the relatively warm Texas Low heads off East and a new Arctic system moves in
with maybe Sunshine this afternoon?

It’s still snowing this morning to variable degrees of density, but nicely adding up.

Winds are moderate to strong from the Nor-West, so coming up the
Mountain over Beauvallon, moving towards Duncan. It may be gusty,
and as the Systems change up, it may be really gusty, but chances are
the most wind velocity today will be occurring well after Last Run closing.

(**) Un-Groomed Open Terrain can and does have variable Natural Hazards.
Caution is warranted in all Un-Groomed areas in both Speed and Navigation.
It is not February yet, so the early Snow, as great as it is, is not at a depth
that absolutely covers everything. There are “Organic” and "In-Organic”,
i.e., Tree/shrub/rock hazards that can change in exposures during snowfall
and traffic. Contact with hazards can cause damage or injury, so please
be careful.

More to follow here as time permits this morning and later in Apres Ski,
but by now, you’ve probably got the main point anyway...

Tremblant’s in Great Shape, and Getting Better Every Day.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
