1/3/17 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Mid.Eve. Apres Ski Edit Under Construct at 9:30 P.M.
Practical Photography was Impractical in all but a few places.
Too Much Flying Snow? No Such Thing At A Ski Resort!
Photography was most Impractical on the South and Soleil. There was so much
driven snow coating the Camera, its Function went into “Fail Safe” lock-down mode.
Second time for that this season...
The Edge Sector was by comparative standards “Calm”, that is to say, in the “Lee”
or shelter from the brunt of the wind borne Snow, and what was there, was at your
back on the way up on the Edge Quad.
Even Then... High Velocity Blowing Snow in near-Blizzard density Smear-obscured
Camera Lens almost at the very moment it was raised for almost any picture.
We tried dozens of times, over 160 actually, but we’re very happy to report that
only about 10 or so pic’s from today may be recoverable. A Loss of Camera function
due to Pervasive, White-out Snowfall is always a “Happy Problem” at a Ski Resort!
It literally snowed Hard and Fast all day, with all manner of different Snow Flake
dimension and humidity combinations. After all, it was not all that outright cold,
fairly close to Zero, but the Wind seemed to be in a perpetual Swirl over Summit
sectors and when it was whipping at its fastest, the Snow seemed finer, as in small,
while when the wind was relatively calmer, the flakes seemed bigger, fatter and
a lot wetter.
No Doubt, “Experts” had the most advantage. Beginners and Intermediates needed
to be very careful. For Example, there might only be 4 or 5 days in any normal season
where P’tit Bonheur builds Moguls, and today might be the 3rd one already this season.
In our experience, Nansen Haut, Upper, continued to exhibit the best, All-Day,
Mogul-Free, Smoothness for a “Green” rated Trail.
It never Freezing Rained a drop, however, late in the day, there was a very fine
particle’d Sleety/Misty/Frozen/Granular/Sand-like Airborne precipitation that began
to coat Goggle Lenses to the point that frequent stops were required to wipe off
the frozen residue. If you did not, the buildup quickly rendered vision, and forward
motion, unsafe.
That had nothing to do with the Trail Surface Quality though, for the 90% of
the day it was all Snow, it was “Fast” and goggles were fine, but even when it
seemed to change, if you periodically cleared your lenses, the Snow Surfaces
remained surprisingly “Fast” all day. As a matter of fact, the “Speed” you got in
todays Surfaces just seemed to Sneak Up on you, and before you knew it, You
Were ZAPPED... into Warp Drive! Of course in some of the thicker accumulations
there was depth drag, but that never seemed to grab you for more than a moment.
Difficult to say what today’s accumulation Stat. will be, we’d guess 15cm’s +/-.
But... that’s maybe more just Observations of what might be Drifting around, so
we’ll defer to “Official” Sources for that number in the Morning, even though it
might be a “Mute” Point as more and more Snow is forecast to fall on a continuous
basis through to Thursday Morning at about 4:00 A.M.
A Complete Hour by Hour Weather Forecast Model
Through To Thursday A.M. Is Included Below.
----------------- 6:59 A.M. Orig. Post ---------------
93(*) Open Trails on Versant Sud, South, Nord, North, Soleil and Edge Sectors at #Tremblant.
There’s A Big Bunch Of Snow Falling At Tremblant.
"As much as", “Up To”, 30cm’s, 12 Inches, in the next +/- 30 Hours. This is maybe the
“Game-Changer” for the Hors Piste, Sous Bois, Glade, Un-Groomed Open Terrain
we would be looking for in the Overall, Reduced Hazards, Maturing of the Season.
We Got This One Right !!!
Back on Dec.30th, when Forecasters were calling for Freezing Rain, We Wrote:
“There Is Some Possibility That Tremblant’s Cooler Mountain Elevations
May See SNOW In The Tuesday Warm Cycle."(**)
---------- Official Environment Canada Snowfall Warning ------------------
((**)We also go on to say that there is a Northerly Latitudinal Relationship to the
likelihood of Snow which favours Tremblant, and ultimately we feel the whole
scenario is a positive combination of all of these factors.)
In The Mean-Time, Up To Yesterday...
The Best Signs of Great Skiing/Boarding!
And(repeat for effect), if you can wrap your head around it ...
up to 30 cm’s of Fresh New Snow... Starting Today!!!
In our Annotated Weather Graphic for January 1st, 2017, we wrote:
“With This Wind Speed And Direction, Look For Potential Snow Drifting On Lowell Thomas...”

A Classic Tremblant “Orographic” Snowfall Event?
Can You Imagine How This Scene Above Is Going To Look With 30cm’s(1 Foot)
MORE SNOW TODAY???
WOW !!!
On another note...
Relating to a “Conditions” Feedback Experience From Yesterday...
We would like to point out one of our “Pet Peeve’s”, i.e., something we like to dis-like...
Intermediates Complaining about Expert Trails.
"Oh, we tried McCulloch and it was a Sheet of Ice”, this from an Intermediate Skier
who was riding up the TGV Quad(We are making an assumption here that may be
incorrect, but when you see someone with entry level Rental Gear, you can bet with
a fair degree of certainty they’re Intermediate at best because real Experts will insist
on High Performance Gear and you’ll almost never see them on lesser equipment).
Anyway... on that same ride up, as we ascend towards the top, onto the main
Summit Pitch of McCulloch... comes this rather obvious Expert and we think the
evidence speaks for itself.
Does This Above Look Like “A Sheet Of Ice”??? We Think Not...
This Highly Skilled Skier pictured above Carved The Entire Pitch,
descending down the side closest to the TGV Quad, with almost
Perfect Form and as you can plainly see, without any apparent
signs of “Iciness” referred to by the Chair Lift Rider next to us.
Typically, Any Perceived Degree of “Iciness” is, or may be, Directly Proportional to
User Skill Level and Equipment Capabilities.
---------- End of "Pet Peeve” -----------

Weather Notes:
This is a copy of our annotated Original Weather Warning for this event:
Here’s a Graphic that Supports the Possibility Of
Significant Tremblant Powder Potential.
This Above, Could Also Benefit The Edge Sector if Wind Factors Favourable.
