T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit @10:30 P.M.
The Mountain Got Her “Speed” Back.
2.16.17.Sud.South.McCulloch.Upper.Pitch.Left.Side.Descent.e.jpg
The past couple of days had a very fine Natural Snow addition,
however it was not quite as fast as recently preceding snowfalls,
(we think it may have had to do with Humidity), so we were hoping
the “Speed” would be back, and it was.
We are using McCulloch as a Trail Case Study this eve., because there had
been folks commenting on Icy Bits on McCulloch’s upper pitch. What we found
was very typical, “slick” not necessarily “Icy” portions in the centre that gets
the highest level of traversing traffic. What we also found was the outboard edges
with Good snow on the right side descending, and Great snow on the left side
descending. We would also like to point out that if you stand on the centre
of McCulloch for 5 minutes taking pic's, the majority of people having obvious
difficulties on McCulloch are Intermediates. We consequently suspect the majority
of unfavourable feedback is from people who are not the “Experts” McCulloch
is “Black Diamond” rated for. (If you Scroll down into the Original Post Below,
you’ll see a McCulloch Upper Pitch Pic there from yesterday and the difference
in moguls is obvious.)
2.16.17.Sud.South.McCulloch.Upper.Pitch.Right.Side.Descent.c.jpg
Below the McCulloch Upper Pitch, it descends in steps that can be prone to icy
bits on the crests, but on our lines today, not so much as a speck of icy for us.
Clean, Carved, and Super Quick.
2.16.17.McCulloch.Bas.Lower.Smooth.Groomed.Surfaces.f.jpg
Otherwise, in our experience we found "Speed" equally on South and North surfaces,
Plus... we found “Smooth” to a much higher degree everywhere today as well.
With another overnight Grooming cycle tonight, we forecast the trails with
indicated Grooming Icons on tomorrow mornings Official Trail Status will have
very noticeable increases in refined quality.
2.16.17.Beauvallon.Haut.Upper.Views.Weather.Drama.Over.Lac.T.b.jpg
Overnight Lows down to -12C tonight with daytime forecast up to -4C by after
lunch and Big, Big Bonus... “Sunny” All Day !?!?! Moderate Nor-West Winds,
so crossing the Summit from over Beauvallon towards Duncan.

96(*) Open Trails on the “Headed Towards A Record” Snowy Slopes of #Tremblant.
Heavy, Sometimes White-Out, Snowfall... Again....

If It Keeps Up Like This, It Could Be A New Seasonal Record.
The New Snow can represent challenges for those with Beginner or Intermediate
Skills, so Trail Selection is critical for easy navigation. There’s been a moderate
friction level in the new snow too, so on some of the steeper pitches, that’s been
an asset because it offsets gravity ever-so-slightly, and generates a feeling of
enhanced control in completing manoeuvres. For Skiers, it may mean an extra
stride or two to get across plateau’s, for Snowboarders, it may mean that you
want to Pump The Board on the Runout’s for a little extra speed so you don’t
have to take a foot out.
Seeing as how the Weather is Trending up in temp’s, we can expect more
in the way of daily variations in surface Speed characteristics. Application of
Ski and Snowboard Base Wax or Coatings appropriate for “Warm” temp. ranges
is an appropriate utility if you want to maximize “Glide”.
Of Course...
The Scenery Is Spectacular. Tremblant has long been recognized as a
“Post Card” Setting. Almost everywhere you look, Mother Nature’s
remarkable Winter Beauty is in front, beside, and all around you.
It’s almost overwhelming.
2.15.17.Lowell.Thomas.Trail.Side.Scenic.Glimpes.Of.Beauty.d.jpg
We say it because it’s true... no camera on Earth can capture all the Beauty
in these scenes that only your eyes can take in when you stand before them.
Furthermore, it does not matter if it’s a Sunny day or not, the Snowy Grey
days have their own unique and etherial spirit to them.
You Can Always Find The Colours Of Fun At Tremblant!

Kidz Of All Ages Love To Play In The Snow!
And There’s TON’S Of SNOW To Play In!
2.15.17.Lowell.Thomas.Trail.Side.Proof.Of.Snow.Trending.Up.d.jpg
We could push these 160cm Skis directly into the Snow below the surface, but
then you can’t see them so we leave one tip exposed, and the other placed laterally
in front to give a perspective of “Scale”(160cm’s = 5 feet, 3 inches). Not exactly sure
how much is under there(maybe 6 or 7 feet, well over 200cm’s) , but there are places
where stepping off Skis, you sink into snow up to your chest level, and you’re not on
the bottom! It’s like we’re Swimming in Snow! Tying to move through snow this deep
feels almost like treading water, most unusual and very cool fun!
A Note To Those Tremblant Guests From Southerly and/or Caribbean places
that may not be familiar with “Snow”. The Official Seasons Total shows 480cm’s,
almost 16 feet of accumulations. You are not going to step off your Skis anywhere
and disappear under the surface! Snow accumulations compress under their own weight
so you don’t find the whole amount stacked up like that. Up-to-Date Totals are
useful as components in relative conditions comparisons. Generally, more snow(depth),
means more quality over a wider expanse.
Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
No doubt, heavy Snow Accumulations can mean temporary softness, even thickness
in Groomed Terrain because it takes more than one Grooming cycle to optimize
surface density, so there is “Workout” value to the technical side of Skiing/Boarding
these conditions.
2.15.17.Sud.South.McCulloch.Upper.Pitch.Views.TGV.Quad.Lac.T.b.jpg
Basically and in very un-scientific terms, the new Snow exhibits a “Spongy” quality
that is a function of the big fat snowflakes, as well as the quick, deep and rapid build-up.
A BR350, 12,500 Lbs. Grooming Machine can normally compress a 10cm snowfall
in one pass... over a firm pre-existing base, however, that supposes there may be
a period of days between snowfalls that facilitates the “Firm” part. When it Snows
so much every day, as we’ve recently seen, the catching up on the “Firm” part does
not happen the same way as new layers just keep on adding more soft strata.
What this means is that Trails can generate mogul formations from Ski/Board
Traffic patterns as turning energy of each passing person displaces soft surface
snow. Tremblant Guests need to understand that unusually high volumes of raw
snow can take a bit longer to get packed into the base. If the Surface contours
of Moguls are causing any loss of efficient and safe progress, it’s very wise to
default down a level of difficulty, especially after lunch when muscle reserves
may be reduced from early morning levels.

For Genuine Experts, it’s a dream, but even Experts have finite energy.
Consequently, we urge caution for “Experts” to, as “Enthusiasm” needs to
be balanced with available, and maybe more importantly, sustainable, “Energy”.
Bottom Line... Pace yourself, Take it easy, And Go With The Flow...
regardless of your Skill level.
