2/21/17 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Midnight Apres Ski Edit @ Midnight.

Today continued to be very “Technical Skiing” and everything we have written
about the use of smoothness in applied control movements is completely
justifiable. Any kind of jerky or jammed movements lose traction the
instant force applied exceeds edge grip. The only way you can sense the
moment force is going to exceed grip is with very gradually engaged edges.

We went back to Toboggan today to get an impression of “Before” and “After”,
comparing yesterday to today to get an idea how this run and this sector
might be developing. What we found was that it was improved, but less
loose top-layers than we thought might be there. There was less Ice and
fewer moguls, just very firm still. If you have dull edges, you will think
it’s a lot icier.

The biggest specific Ice patch was on the Tapecul Runnout to the Soleil Quad,
right at the top, within 1.5 metres below the Crest it starts at. Sensible Skiers/Boarders
were slowing down to almost Stopped, then carefully navigating through it,
one turn at a time.

Otherwise, the ice below the Toboggan Crests,
was similar to any ice below any crest, a pattern.

Anticipating that pattern allowed you to Keep On Kruisin’
without any of the drama that we see with those who
can’t recognize patterns, and end up Backwards and
Upside Down.

Duncan Continues to Be Extremely High Quality...

We did a 4 minute descent at 15:54 and got Last Run @ 15:58
It was not a crazy fast or irresponsible out of control run either, just a non-stop
Duncan, in Full-Tilt Slalom Mode, Summit-To-Base, all at once, quick, safe, descent,
and we are pleased to report that Duncan is in very fine shape, highly suitable
for Training Laps when low traffic allows safe, swift passage.

Here’s a Sample of “Tremblant Rush-Hour” and They Do Not Stop

You need to drive very carefully around town as the Deer are moving
and they will jump over Snowbanks onto roads Without Notice.

94(*) Open Trails on the Slopes of #Tremblant.

Anyone That Told you It Was Icy, Was Either...

On Skis or Board that have not been tuned in
"Who-Knows-How-Long-Ago”,

or...

Is on Terrain Way Above Their Actual Skill Level.

Otherwise, if you have reasonably fresh edges and select Terrain that’s
appropriate for your actual Skill Level... it’s just really “Firm” Snow that
has a shallow top layer of loose, Machine Groomed granular Snow and
most importantly, is Flat and Smooth. It responds very well to technique
that is smoothly applied without jerking action that can cause loss of grip.

Of course... There can be “Icy" out there, but... your sense of it will
be directly proportional to the tune of your gear and your Skills matched
to Terrain.

There should be a substantial, incremental, Improvement Today in the form of
deeper and more consistent “Shred Depth”, i.e., the increased depth of
the loose top layers for more Grip and Traction for edge-set and control
on everything that Crews were able to Groom last night.

Yesterday was “Day 1” of “Post Thermal Event Grooming Recovery/Refinement.

Relatively Speaking... Years and Years Ago... as Kidz Skiing Tremblant Decades ago,
the day after a Thaw, actually for all the days after a Thaw until the next major
Snowfall, things would be Icy.

In 2017, Current Grooming Technologies can Overnight Recover everything that can
be Groomed into very Ski-Able Terrain, albeit on a thiner than normal, top layer of
Loose Machine Groomed Granular Snow. Every Day Following... Sees major
incremental improvements as more acreage is refined and re-refined and Top
Layers become thicker and more even over Mountain Contours.

Above: This illustrates the HUGE difference between “Firm” and “Icy”.
Edge-Set and Grip are obvious, even if top layers are not at full depth yet.
Today will be even better.

For all the Parents and Grandparents out there, this is a remarkable improvement
because of the historical references to the Icy Memories of yore. It’s absolutely
wonderful to have such an overnight restoration that produces these fine surfaces.

Things could be a lot worse... somewhere else...

For all the Kidz out there that are under 15-20 years of age, you take this for
granted because you have never experienced(at Tremblant) real “Sheets Of Ice”
the way it happened in the Lost Memories of the Mid-to-Late decades of the
20th Century.

Here Is An Example Of Firm, Fast, Fun, Technical Skiing for “Refined” Mode...

...where Turning/Carving forces had to be smoothly applied at lower controlled
speeds in order to retain Grip at all times.
Basically, a lot of fully completed,
short radius turns.
