T360 Late Night Apres Ski @ 11:15 P.M.

Please Note: Open Trail List Revised To 75(*). Data Attached Below.

We were sort of wrong about today, but for the right reasons.

It was more “Winter” than “Spring”.

In our Intro for today we wrote:

"The complex nature of tipping points with weather factors that include
proximity to Zero C by 2 degrees on either side, below or above, are too
great to make anything other than generalized forecast remarks because
at these temp’s, “Little Things” can have “Big Effects”.”

Indeed, the temps were on the low range of forecast,
so it was cool enough, by literally a couple of degrees,
to firm things up.

With More “Winter” than “Spring” Today, there were
more Icy Bits than would have occurred if it had been
more Spring-Like warmth. Below is Versant Sud, South
Side McCulloch and there was no doubt the wind was
erosive here, so an icy section existed below all the
Summit Crests.

The Tipping Points on the Mountain moved to the “Cooler Side” of
the Weather Network Forecast. That meant there was less softening
than we expected.

We consider it a big bonus on the 31st. of March to be wrong about
weather forecasted to be “Warm”, and it ends up “Cool”, like today.
So, it was far more “Winter-Like” and consequently there were
more Icy Bits than hoped for.

What that meant in practical terms, was that the Skiing was very technical.
If you were not over the centre of your Skis, you knew it the first time you
hit an Icy Bit and there were lot’s of “Whoops” moments that could be observed.

For the most part, if you could not make all the Technical Elements,
the absolute best alternative was “Slow”. “Slow”can cover up for all
kinds of mistakes, so when you find yourself getting a bit bent out
of shape on any Slick Surface, throw out the anchors and re-boot
from “Slow”. It will get you home safely, it may not be pretty, but at
the end of the day, Safe is Good.

What always needs to be remembered is that Lower Is Always Better
with any temp. references around Zero C at a Ski Resort. For that reason,
we except the Icy Bits today because Icy can be recovered, Thawed is Gone.

Over on the Nord, North Side, There was a lot more “Firmness” than
expected, but for the most part, not all that Icy, just Super Compacted.

Once you got to about the vertical level of the Expo Peak, things did
become soft, but not so soft as Yesterday, so with more Speed today,
it was still very much Fast and surfaces held good Glide for us there, all day.

By Mid-Descent on the Expo Front Pitch, Surfaces softened
quite obviously, but the Substrates remained mostly frozen.

There were many Sweet Spots of fine performance Skiing,
Beauchemin Bas, Lower was only one example.

So... We did have some of that Super-Soft Mega Carve Snow like yesterday,
just not as much as the Warmer Weather Originally Forecast would have
produced. In the Mean-time... Got Edges? Got Fun!

Tomorrows Weather Forecast Snowy, maybe rainy, up to +3 C
at Sud, South Resort Base. Winds “Light” and from East, so
at least not much breeze to push snow around if it falls.
Another Easy Spring Day, but with a lot of Wild-Cards
that maybe won’t materialize ’til late day???

You Will Be Able To Do This Pretty Much All Day...

The complex nature of tipping points with weather factors that include
proximity to Zero C by 2 degrees on either side, below or above, are too
great to make anything other than generalized forecast remarks because
at these temp’s, “Little Things” can have “Big Effects”.

So... Generally Speaking, It’s going to be another day of Excellent Tremblant
Spring Skiing!

So... Generally Speaking, There are going to be some Super-Soft Zones
and some Super-Firm Zones.

So... Generally Speaking, There are going to be some Wet Substrates
and some Icy Bits.

So... Generally Speaking, It’s Going To Be Windy All Day!

So... Generally Speaking, It’s going to be just as much Fun Exploring
to find all the many, many Sweet Spots and Sweet Sectors that will
be out there just like the past 4 days, but... with the unique Fingerprint
that Mother Nature is going to wave her hand over Tremblant with for Today!

Below: One Of Many Excellent Trail Examples.

Versant Nord, North Side “Duncan”, has enjoyed an entire Season of Excellence.
This sample shot, taken yesterday from the Duncan Quad as it rises up over the
Summit Pitch beside upper Saute-Moutons, illustrates the “Easy” that has
been characteristic with specific reference to Duncan, virtually every day you
could be on it, including yesterday, and we hope today as well.

There are going to be people who take exception from our favourable
opinion on Duncan, however, based on decades of experience with it,
and it’s relative condition to that experience, we stand by our comments
of “Excellence” because Mountain Crews have simply been able to deliver
day after day of remarkable Quality and Consistency into this trail that even
Life-Long Locals are positively commenting on.

Generally Speaking...

Close analysis of Complaints about Duncan, or any other Open Groomed Trails
primarily centres around either Non-Experts whining about Expert Rated Terrain,
or Anyone Without Tuned Gear. Basically, if we “Hear” about glitches “Anywhere”,
we go try to “There” to see what the reality is, and time after time, we find
criticisms to be exaggerations far beyond what a knowledgable, well equipped
Expert would find.

The Bottom Line On This Point Is:

Beware Unfounded Criticism, Select Terrain Appropriate for your Actual Skill Level,
Bring your Tuned Gear and you will have an Excellent Tremblant Experience!

As Far As The Un-Groomed Experts Only Open Terrain:

Of course, there are way more “Wild Cards” in the Hors Piste, Sous Bois,
Glades and Un-Groomed Steeps or Mogul Zones.

“Last Run” Air Time, Versant Nord, North Side “Windigo” at Lower Fuddle-Duddle.

3.30.17.Nord.North.Windigo.Air.Time.At.Fuddle.Duddle.Bas.Lower.Intersection.f.jpg (676.08 KiB) Viewed 2353 times
Our Friends who “Live” for bumps tell us about the daily variability that
always includes “Fun”, but sometimes seems unpredictable in detail, so it
would be fair to say that Cautious Exploration is always required in the
Un-Groomed, and there can be glitches today that were not there yesterday,
or no glitches today where they were yesterday, so a far more “a la Carte”
daily scenario.

Weather Notes:

Too Early To Tell Exactly... How much Snow will fall tonight,
but it certainly will be welcome! Even small amounts over
freshly overnight Groomed can make a big difference in elevated
surface quality, so looking forward to this refresher.
