12/12/17 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

44(*) Open Trails On The More Snowy, More Wintery Slopes of #Tremblant.

It’s really quite a simple point...

This is some of Finest Snow you will ever Ski on.

By All That Is Arriving, And By All That Is Forecast,
What we are entering into is:

Pure Winter.

"Pure Winter” is a term we use to define a period of sequential days
without any “+”C value Temp/Thermal occurrence, where Tremblant’s
Mountain Op’s efforts become completely dedicated to “Refinement”.

The important distinction is that there is zero time needed for icy recovery,
so all that precious time and talent within the Grooming Team can be
completely applied to the upward escalating quality and expansion without
needing to waste a single moment on repairs caused by unwanted thermal
forces.

The Current shot of Winter temps also delivers our most favourite Quality
of snowfall, what we call “Squeaky” cold Snow. When you walk across a
packed surface of this snow, your footsteps make an audible “Reek, Reek,
Reek, Reek", sound as each foot pivots over the snow in the progression of steps.

We also call this “Cryogenic” Snow, super cool, super low humidity or “Dry” Snow.

It quite simply has some of the very best possible performance characteristics
of very low surface friction, with very high traction and edge-set.

We theorize that Snow has two principle ways of bonding with itself.
1) Adhesive Bonding caused by sufficient internal moisture or humidity
to the point that the snow has “Sticky” qualities, and will hold together
on contact. This is the snow that under very low hand pressure, forms
excellent “Snow Balls” that will stay together in flight. It can have high
or low surface friction rates, depending on packed or loose density as
well as other factors.
2) Mechanical Bonding caused by sufficient external pressure from either
a 12,000Lbs. BR350 Grooming Machine or by it’s own weight(if there’s
enough), all when the Snow is very cold and dry. At its driest, this is the
snow that will not pack easily with hand pressure. It does not make good
Snow Balls and they usually fall apart when thrown.

This is the Snow we have now. Any of the “Stickiness” that could
be present at higher temps is almost completely absent and that’s
what gets us this very low friction, yet extremely “Grippy” surface
when Packed and Groomed by Tremblant’s Mountain Op’s team.

This is some of Finest Snow you will ever Ski on.

This is some of the Easiest, most Forgiving Snow
you will ever Ski on.

The Huge Bonus is that all these fine attributes apply
equally to all Skill Levels. From Beginners to World Class
Experts, what makes this Great Snow for everyone is
basically, no matter who you are, you get the most effects
from the least efforts. Of course, what that also means is
that more effort yields even greater effect, so both Learning
and Performance can be raised to higher levels with the
greatest efficiency.

For sure, at these temps, you will need to pay attention to
outer garment layers and fastenings to retain warmth and
prevent drafts, but even entry level Winter clothing has the
benefit of very effective insulation from current technologies,
so it’s never been easier to stay warm than it is right now.

If You’re Driving To Tremblant Today...

HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS ALERT.
Near-Blizzard, White-Out, Swirling and Blowing Snow
creates potential danger. SLOW DOWN and
Use Extreme Care. Icy Road Surfaces are
to be expected.

Conditions Notes:

In addition to all the aforementioned Snow qualities, there are
some things unique to this December 12th date.

Firstly, it’s still technically “Fall” for another 10 days or so. This makes
the arrival of “Pure Winter” Conditions right now unusual for that reason
alone. These consistent, Sustained Multi-Day Sub-Zero’s often do not come
along until very late December or into January or even February.

Secondly, we do not yet have the benefit of “Mid-Season” base
or total fullness of mid seasonal accumulations, so not all Trails are Open
yet, and much of the "Hors Piste”, Sous Bois”, Glade or Un-groomed Mogul
Zones are not yet Open. Of course, if this accumulation trend continues, it
will not be long before you begin to see lots more Open Trails and big zones
of the “Au Natural” Terrain be certified for Opening by the Ski Patrol...
However, today we have...

First Major Hors Piste, Sous Bois,
Glade Skiing, Season Opening...

“Le Tunnel"

The Best, Shining example of Newly Open "Sous Bois”, Glade Skiing today
is Trail #66 “Le Tunnel”. This is very good news for Tremblant Bump
and Glade Skiers/Boarders. Le Tunnel is immediately adjacent to Banzai(#65)
within the Nord, North Summit, Lowell Thomas Sector, and it has been
favoured by Mother Nature with a great and Early Abundance of Natural
Snow, which is the only way it can Open.

Here’s a Pic.File Le Tunnel sample from last season. The Glade Skiing exists
on both sides of this trail and there’s loads of room laterally off to the sides
to explore.

Bottom Line on Conditions...

It’s still only December 12th, so while it’s not yet the most Open Trails,
it is still an exceptional number for this date, and what is Open is arguably
some of the Best Snow you will ever Ski on.
