12/19/17 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Evening Apres Ski Edit @ 11:15 P.M.

This is the Essence of Today at Tremblant:

There were places within Versant Nord, the North Side,
that had about 30cm’s, one foot, of Natural Snowfall between
Noon and Last Run.

Some of those accumulations were from Drift-in,
some were from outright volume of precipitation.
Not everywhere got that much, but everywhere
got some snow. No doubt, the North got more.

There was brief Freezing Rainy/Sleet that happened about 11:00 A.M.
It was more noticeable on the South Side, but did occur to a lesser
degree on the North too. The beginning of the New Snowfall quickly
changed concern to delight, and for the rest of the day, the Trails rang
with the shouts and whoops of excited Skiers and Boarders romping
through the rapidly developing Powder Lines.

There was so much snowfall, and so quick, that in less than an hour,
there were tracks in the new thickness that may have added challenge
for Beginners. The Experts quickly disappeared into the Hors Piste.

There was so much snowfall, and so quick, it rendered the camera
so snowy and wet that it went into default shut-down, fail-safe mode.
That’s a long explanation for not many pic’s, but no kidding, the snow
would coat the camera and the lens in less than 30 seconds when out
for a pic. and soon it was too wet to use.

The new snow was very humid and where thin, it was fast, where thick,
it was slower, but only due to frontal resistance from depth, not running
resistance from friction.

Into Tomorrow....

The temp’s are forecast to be -3C overnight and dropping very slowly
during the day to about -5C by Last Run. Sunny All Day. After Sunset
tomorrow, there should be a quicker drop to about -15C.

The likelihood is that the majority of Trail Surfaces will be
very fine, however there may be glitches from thick, tracked snow
to even the odd Icy bit where wind or traffic have concentrated
abrasive forces. Any glitches should be very minor and we would
recommend you coat or wax Ski/Board Bases to optimize Glide.

This Is What We’ve Had To Deal With At Tremblant...

A Steady Build-up Of All This White Stuff...

The Difference in Open Trails this morning is + One(1).

It turns out that “One” is a Locally Very Popular Trail, #94,
and it also turns out we featured this “One” yesterday...
so, for the sake of “Open”, here’s a repeat...

Versant Nord, The North Side,

"La Griffe”...

This Is Now “Open”, and showing “Groomed”.

At Last Run yesterday, you could see Mother Nature making
Snow over the Summit as the wind pushed up Beauvallon
and over to P’tit Bonheur.

It was an awesome display that we tried to capture in this pic. below.

Basically, what was happening Above, was a Conveyer Belt of
air movement from the Left side of this pic., over to the Right
side of this pic., and within that air movement you could see
the Snow condensing out of the very thin cloud as it swirled
across La Crete towards the North Side. It was a captivating sight.

Underfoot, the Ski experience was Satin-like, and we would have
to say that some of the Cold, Dry Snow friction that’s been present
for the past chilly spell, was noticeably less in many areas where
you could feel the Speed coming back in the form of more glide
between turns.

The Lateral Grip was unaffected, you just had more speed to harness
and that raised the “Thrills” Level up a few notches as you felt
the additional g-force alternating between turns. It was definitely
more exciting if you could maintain proper form with a more rapid pace.

There’s so much new snow falling now that we may not have quite
the same speed, but the last several days of -20C temp. cycles
should still be in the top layers all day today, and that may help
keep the overall Glide quick as the new Snow contacts a surface
that’s cooler than the air it just fell through.

By Way Of Contrast...

Here is a the same POV as Above, but 24hours Earlier, the day before,
in exactly the same place:

As long as you are within Open Terrain that is matched
to your actual Skill Level, you will be having an Excellent Day.
If there are any Vision issues it’s probably going to be from
too much falling snow. Oh well, you’ll just have to suffer, but
if you do experience loss of distance sight lines, adjust speed
down to stay within safe, visible, navigational limits.

A Minor Blip in the Temp’s today may see a bit of softening,
but with Resort Base rising to +2C(?.if.?), we expect the cooler
Mountain Elevations and Precip., to remain all Snow.
We could be wrong. In any event, the Skiing should be fantastic
and we don’t think there’s any possibility we’d be wrong on that.

Weather Notes:

The Hourly Forecast has been very dynamic over the past
12 hours and as frequently occurs, it now shows Cooler Temp’s
by a Degree or two, which is a critical difference @anywhere +/- Zero C.
The 07:00A.M. rate of Snowfall is increasing in density, and
showing steady accumulation. All indicators point to “Wonderful”.

Conditions Notes:

You Never Have To Worry About Conditions
doing anything other than “Better” when Temp’s
are rising within any degree of a Sub-Zero range.

This will be especially true within the “Groomed” Terrain
today. Within the Un-Groomed, Hors Piste, Sous Bois, Glade
Terrain, Every Snowflake counts, but we’re still at Early
Season depths, so Caution is your best friend on all
explorations.

Another Quiet Day before the Holiday Rush begins.

Peaceful, Snowing and Very Serene.
