T360 Evening Apres Ski Edit Under Construct @ 10:30 P.M. EST.
The Mountain's Speed Came Back...
Depending on the device you look at the above pic. with, you might
have to scroll the image over to see the far right lower corner where
you’ll find the best clue possible regarding the speed. The posture of
the Skier streamlining over the crest on Kandahar tells the story... Fast.
The tiny bit of frictional resistance that’s been in the softer surfaces
for the past couple of days was essentially gone. We think it’s largely
the higher compacted Snow Surface density of another overnight
Grooming cycle last night.
The Ease Of Speed was evident on all the Open Groomed Terrain
from side-to-side and top-to-bottom.
Snowmaking continues on in a number of areas that you can review
in the Archived Official Data Below. Here’s an example that’s always
popular with Kidz of all ages, Versant Nord, North, “Rope Tow”.
Another area of significant interest is well covered by this pic. below
showing Snowmaking on Expo’s upper pitch, as well as Dynamite getting
blown snow all the way down from it’s very top to the drop-off cliff
at the mid-mark, seen below on Screen Right. On Screen Left, Cossak
has been milled flat.
Tremblant has announced the Weekend Open Trail total
at 80 or so runs, so the jump in the Open Numbers is
going to come from a combination of Soleil and Edge
Sectors re-opening, as well as additionally ready terrain
that’s strictly from Snowmaking. If you want an overview
of some of tomorrows new open, scroll back in these Forum
dates for a week or so worth of Snowmaking Icons on the
Archived Official Data.
It seems obvious to us, it’s going to be a very good weekend
with so many factors of “More” and “Great” surfaces, all converging
to be “Open” tomorrow.
It’s going to be another cool overnight, coming in at -17C for Open,
and rising to about -12C by just after lunch. The wind is forecasted
at moderate speeds from the East, crossing the Summit from more
or less, over Duncan, towards McCulloch. Wind Sheltered Sunny
spots will feel warmth if you’re ready for a trail-side break.
Hope to see you out there!

Best Way To Get On Top Of The Situation At Tremblant...
Today Is The Shortest Day Of The Year,
Winter Solstice, 11:28 A.M., December 21, 2017
We have an Out Of Office Early morning Appt.,
so trying to get an early 12:31 A.M. posting start...
Feature On Versant Nord, the North Side, La Griffe.
... a HUGELY Popular, Local Expert Favourite.
La Griffe is actually one of the latest Trail creations at Tremblant
with a designated # @ 94. It is however, almost at the centre of
one of the single most popular sectors of the Mountain that first
Opened in 1948, what is now known as basically the Expo Quad
Peak of Versant Nord, the North Side. It is a “Black Diamond”,
“Expert” Rated Trail and for Best Results, you really want to be
a Legitimate “Expert” to be safe on it.(**)
Several days ago we included a docu.pic taken from the foot of
La Griffe where it intersects with lower Fuddle Duddle showing the
last of the series of Big Snowmaking Bumps used to form the primary
base the trail is Opened on.
For today’s Case Study, and with the Trail Open, we’re starting
here at the top.
The upper entrance to La Griffe is located off the Expo Quad.
A Sharp Turn Right exiting the Chair Lift will take you across
the top of Sissy Schuss, Fuddle Duddle, Windigo, and finally
on to La Griffe. It is about 100 Metres or so with a slight
slope, so easy to get to. If you go One Trail Too Far...
you end up on the upper pitch of “Dynamite”, the steepest
run at Tremblant, so be careful on that one...
La Griffe was groomed out relatively flat, but between 20 and 30 cm’s
of very soft natural snow meant the with even light traffic, soft moguls
formed. They were very easy to either jump with or blast right through
if you needed to. The softness seemed to not have a bottom, so if
you had Good Edge and the Muscle to hold it, there was even some very
short radius carving on the smoother Trail-Sides.
As Mogul runs go, La Griffe was very “Forgiving” today.
Please Note: La Griffe is probably the One Trail At Tremblant
that has the Unique Distiction of being the Most Shaded, Least
Naturally Lit, Opposite Facing, Heaviest Shadowed, Farthest
From The Sun Trail, on the whole Mountain. That has nothing
to do with the technically very fine descent lines that are very
true to the Fall Line, and the shade part often helps protect
La Griffe’s surfaces from Spring Solar.
So... On the Shortest Day of the Year, it is comparatively “Dark”
for most of Open Hours and this series of 12/20/17 Docu.pic’s
reflects that in the rather “Blue” ambient, shadow light towards
the end of the day. Consequently, the Pic’s are very much cooked
up to alter contrast and white balance to get as much surface detail
as possible.
(**) There would be a Select(Few) Number of Days when
La Griffe could be attempted by a Confident Intermediate,
“IF” it is Freshly Winch Groomed To “As Flat As A Billiard Table”
Specifications. Otherwise, La Griffe is NOT one of those places
you take a learning Skier or Boarder. The Steepness and the
90 degree turns in combination with typical Mogul formations
are Not Intermediate User Friendly.
Insert: Ski Scaled Trail Surface Sample:
Below:
The lower runout of La Griffe intersects with Fuddle Duddle Bas, Lower,
that can be seen here coming in from the left side. At this point there
is about 1/3 of the remaining vertical descent to the Nord, North base
of the Expo Quad.
-------------- End of La Griffe Feature ----------------
After The Big Snowfall...
Repeat, General Conditions Notes
From Last Night’s Apres Ski:
The looseness of the Top Layers was enough to generate
a bit of resistance even on Nansen and P’tit Bonheur, but that
did not in any way impede the execution of basic control motions.
Within Other respective Skill Level Groomed Terrain, there was never
any fear of “Run Away” and in certain instances, it actually
made it easier to Face the Fall Line under more controlled speed.
All of Tremblant is covered with tons of Fresh Snow, so as we
wrote in yesterdays Post, it takes a couple of days to get to more
optimized surface compaction. All the Groomed will Big-Time Benefit
from the Wed. Overnight Grooming Night-Shift, as another Packing
Cycle begins to generate some resilient density in the top layers
that will become Mogul resistant.
We expect that there should be noticeable increases in
inherent Speed and Glide in today’s Open, Groomed Terrain.
Same Early Season Cautions for Hors Piste, Sous Bois, Glade
and Un-Groomed Terrain. As Good As It Is... it’s Not Mid-February, yet,
so hazards may still not be completely submerged.
We Hear Through “Well Informed Sources”, that the Mountain
should have All Four Sides Open, with 80(*) some-odd Open
Trails for the Weekend! Very Very Good News For Christmas
Holiday Guest Arrivals!!!
